Before you proceed, identify the phone and check whether a backup exists. Then use the instructions for that exact device: eligible iPhones may offer an on-device erase, while Android recovery depends on Google’s remote-erase requirements or the manufacturer’s reset procedure. Afterward, you may need the Apple or Google account previously associated with the phone to reactivate it.
Before resetting, check these three things
- Exact device and software: Recovery steps vary by operating system, version, and phone model. Follow the current instructions from Apple, Google, or your manufacturer rather than applying a button combination from another phone.
- Backup status: A reset erases local data. If important files may not be backed up, stop before erasing: the official consumer recovery routes described here do not offer a way to remove the lock while preserving inaccessible, unbacked-up data.
- Account access: Make sure you can sign in to the Apple, Google, or Samsung account associated with the device. A reset may not remove anti-theft or ownership checks.
Can you reset the phone without a computer?
Sometimes. Eligible iPhones can be erased from the lock screen if the required software, connection, and account conditions are met. Android users may be able to erase remotely through Google Find Hub if its requirements were already enabled and the phone is online. Other Android and Samsung reset procedures use the phone’s buttons; Samsung’s documented recovery-menu procedure connects the phone to a computer by USB.

Choose the route your phone supports and that you can complete with your available account credentials and equipment. A remote or lock-screen erase is still an erase; it does not preserve data stored only on the phone.

Use the lock-screen erase option if it appears
Apple says its on-device reset is available on eligible devices running iOS 15.2 or later. Find My must have been enabled before lockout, the phone must have an active cellular or Wi-Fi connection, and you must know the Apple Account password.

- On iOS 17 or later, use Forgot Passcode? on the locked screen. On iOS 15.2 or iOS 16, Apple describes an Erase [Device] option.
- Follow the displayed prompts and enter the Apple Account password when requested.
- After the erase, set up the iPhone and restore from an available backup if you have one.
If the option is unavailable or the requirements are not met, Apple directs users to reset the iPhone with a computer. For an iPhone with an eSIM running iOS 16 or earlier, Apple advises contacting the carrier about a QR code before proceeding.
Use Apple’s current device instructions
Button and computer steps can depend on the iPhone model. Use Apple’s instructions for your model rather than guessing at a sequence: Apple: If you forgot your iPhone passcode.

Reset an Android phone
Erase remotely with Google Find Hub
Google’s remote erase requires the phone to have power and internet access, a Google Account signed in, Find Hub turned on, and the device visible on Google Play. If those conditions are met, use Google’s Find Hub instructions to erase it. If remote erase is unavailable, Google says to reset the phone using its power and volume buttons, following the steps for that specific manufacturer and model.
Google’s guidance is direct: “If you can’t unlock your phone, you’ll need to erase it.” Its instructions also note that a Google Account backup may be restorable if you know the device PIN or pattern that was active when the backup was made. The “Forgot pattern” account-reset instruction applies only to Android 4.4 or lower.

Samsung Galaxy: remote erase or recovery menu
Samsung documents SmartThings Find as a remote erase option when the phone is connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data, signed in to a Samsung Account, and the required remote control and remote unlock settings were enabled. If those conditions do not apply, Samsung documents a button-based factory reset for a locked phone. Button combinations depend on the model, and the procedure described by Samsung connects the phone to a computer using USB before opening the recovery menu.

Follow Samsung’s instructions for the exact device: Samsung UK: How do I perform a factory reset on my mobile device?. Do not treat the USB connection as a way to bypass the lock or protect files from erasure.
What happens to your data after a reset?
A factory reset erases personal data, settings, and other content stored on the phone. You can restore only what is available in a backup; a reset is not a method for recovering files from a locked device. If you do not know whether a backup exists and the local data is irreplaceable, do not erase the phone until you have checked the backup options for your account.

After the reset, set up the phone again and restore from an available backup. For Android, Google notes that restoring a backup may require the PIN or pattern that was active when that backup was created.
Why might the phone ask for an account after erasing?
Apple Activation Lock
Activation Lock may require the Apple Account and password used to set up the iPhone, or the device passcode. If the phone belongs to a business or school, contact its IT department or manager. Apple says a person with proof-of-purchase documentation can start an Activation Lock support request: Apple: Activation Lock for iPhone and iPad.
Google Factory Reset Protection
A Samsung button reset can trigger Google Factory Reset Protection, which may require the Google Account previously used on the phone before you can access it. If you know the account but forgot its password, use Google account recovery. Samsung warns that a newly reset Google password may take 24 hours or longer to become active for the device; it also directs users who cannot recall their credentials to an authorized Samsung Service Centre with proof of purchase.

If you cannot complete recovery
- If you are unsure about data loss, pause rather than choosing an erase. The official routes covered here do not promise to preserve local data while removing an inaccessible screen lock.
- If you cannot sign in to the required account, use that provider’s account-recovery process before attempting setup again.
- If an ownership check remains unresolved, contact the manufacturer or, for an organization-owned phone, its administrator. Apple’s Activation Lock support request requires proof of purchase; Samsung identifies an authorized service centre and proof of purchase for the documented locked-out case.
- Avoid third-party tools that promise to bypass Activation Lock or Factory Reset Protection, or to recover inaccessible files without a backup. The official guidance supports erasure, account recovery, and manufacturer support—not a guaranteed bypass that preserves unbacked-up data.
