If you’re locked out of a Samsung Galaxy, first check whether you can use your previous PIN, password, or pattern. Samsung says eligible devices running One UI 6.1 or later may accept the previous lock method for up to 72 hours after a change. If that option is unavailable, Samsung Find and Google Find My Device can erase a device, but neither is a data-preserving unlock. A reset may also require the Google account previously used on the phone.
Can you recover access without erasing the phone?
Possibly, if you recently changed the screen lock and the device supports Samsung’s previous-lock recovery. This option is for owners who forgot a new PIN, password, or pattern; it does not defeat the phone’s security or remove account verification.

Try the previous lock method
- On the locked screen, make at least five unsuccessful attempts, then look for the Forgot PIN/Password/Pattern option. Samsung says this option appears after five or more unsuccessful attempts on supported devices. Don’t keep guessing if the recovery prompt does not appear.
- Follow the on-screen prompts and enter the previous PIN, password, or pattern.
- If accepted, set a new screen lock and make sure you can remember it.
Samsung India’s guidance says the previous method may be available on models running One UI 6.1 or later for up to 72 hours after the lock is changed, and can be used once per lock type. Availability and screen labels vary by model and software version. See Samsung’s forgotten-lock guidance.

The remaining remote options described by Samsung erase the device. They are not ways to regain access while keeping data stored only on the phone. Before choosing one, consider whether important photos, messages, or files are backed up and whether you can sign in to the accounts previously associated with the device.

Erase a Galaxy with Samsung Find
Samsung’s Find services can remotely manage or erase registered Galaxy devices when the required account and device conditions are met. Samsung’s U.S. guidance says the device must be on and connected to a stable network, have a Samsung account added, and have remote controls enabled. If it is offline, an erase request may wait until it reconnects.
- Use Samsung Find or SmartThings Find with the Samsung account associated with the locked device.
- Select the Galaxy device and choose the erase option shown for it.
- Read the confirmation carefully before proceeding; erasure deletes data from the device.
- Afterward, follow the setup prompts and be prepared to verify the Google account previously registered on the device if requested.

Reset using Google Find My Device
Samsung also documents Google Find My Device as a reset route for a Galaxy configured with a Google account. This is an erase-and-setup option, not an unlock that preserves local data.
- Sign in to Google Find My Device with the Google account associated with the phone.
- Select the device and choose the available factory-reset or erase action.
- Confirm only if you accept that data on the device will be deleted.
- When the phone restarts, complete setup and verify ownership as prompted.

What happens after a factory reset?
A factory reset returns the phone to factory settings and deletes personal data. It does not necessarily make the phone ready for anyone to use: Google Factory Reset Protection (FRP) may ask for the Google account previously registered on the device. For Android 9 and later, Samsung says the previously configured screen-lock method may also be available to verify ownership.

That is Samsung’s explanation in its official U.S. factory-reset guidance. If you do not know the required account credentials or cannot complete verification, contact Samsung rather than relying on a supposed bypass. Reset details and prompts can vary by device and software version; Samsung’s factory-reset and FRP instructions explain the ownership checks.

If the previous-lock recovery is unavailable and you cannot complete account verification after an erase or reset, contact Samsung support or an authorized service center. Be prepared to follow its proof-of-ownership process. Samsung does not promise a general data-preserving recovery outcome for every locked device.
