A device passcode controls access to the phone; app locks add authentication before selected apps open; hidden apps or private spaces make some apps less visible or separate them from the main space; and a privacy screen protector reduces side-angle viewing. Each addresses a different exposure, and none guarantees that every trace or copy of information disappears.
Which kind of phone privacy do you need?
Start with the person or situation you want to protect against. Someone who can pick up an unlocked phone presents a different risk from someone glancing at the screen from beside you. Choose the layer that matches the risk rather than treating every feature as an interchangeable “phone lock.”

| Layer | What it helps with | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Device screen lock | Restricts access to the phone itself. | A strong PIN or password remains important even when biometrics are enabled. |
| App lock | Requires authentication to open selected apps. | Availability and what information is concealed vary by platform. |
| Hidden app or private space | Reduces casual visibility or provides a separate app space. | Hiding does not guarantee that an app or its use is undiscoverable; separation and backup behavior have limits. |
| Privacy screen protector | Limits viewing from side angles. | It does not authenticate users, and it can affect display quality or touch responsiveness. |
How do I lock an app on iPhone?
On iPhone, the built-in app lock uses Face ID, Touch ID, or the device passcode. Apple’s iOS 27 guide describes locking or hiding supported apps: open the app’s options and choose the available lock or hide action. The precise choices depend on the app and iOS version. See Apple’s iPhone guide to locking or hiding an app.

What app locking conceals on iPhone
Apple says information from locked apps is excluded from some other locations, including notification previews, search, Siri suggestions, and call history. That reduces several casual ways of seeing app activity, but it should not be read as a promise that every trace, backup, or copy of information is erased.
The lock or hidden status applies on that iPhone and does not sync with iCloud. Treat it as a setting on the particular device, not as an account-wide privacy control.

How does Android Private Space work?
Private Space is a separate space for apps on eligible devices running Android 15 or later. It can use a separate lock and can be hidden while locked. Device compatibility matters: a manufacturer or administrator may disable the feature. Google’s Private Space help page explains setup and availability.

Apps in Private Space are not simply made invisible copies of apps in the main space. Google says app data is not moved from the main space, so existing data there does not automatically become private by placing or installing an app in Private Space. Consider where the app is installed and where its data is stored.

Hiding the space while it is locked reduces casual visibility, but Google notes its existence may still be discovered through computer access, device logs, or apps. Private Space is a useful access and visibility boundary, not a guarantee of undetectability.
Does Face ID or another biometric keep an app private?
Biometrics authenticate the person attempting access; they do not replace the device credential. Google recommends using a strong PIN or password even when biometrics are enabled, because an unauthorized person may try to override biometric protections. As Google Android Help puts it: “Even if you use biometrics, you’ll still want a strong password in case an unauthorized individual tries to override your biometric protections.”

For apps using Apple’s biometric authentication, Apple says the app receives only a success-or-failure result from Face ID or Touch ID, not the biometric data itself. That describes what the app receives during authentication; it does not mean the app-lock feature hides every other record of app use. See Apple Platform Security’s explanation of Face ID and Touch ID and Google’s Android security guidance.
Can someone see my screen from the side?
A privacy screen protector is a physical aid for off-angle viewing. It can make it harder for someone beside you to read the display, but it does not lock the phone or app and does not protect a screen that the viewer can see head-on. Choose one made for your exact phone model: size and fit are not universal.

Traditional privacy filters can affect brightness, clarity, or touch responsiveness. Those trade-offs vary by product. For example, Belkin’s support information applies to specified iPhone models and should not be taken as a compatibility list for other phones.
Samsung has described a Privacy Display for the Galaxy S26 Ultra, a manufacturer-specific feature rather than evidence that every phone has built-in off-angle protection. See Samsung Mobile Press’s Galaxy S26 Ultra announcement.
What should I do when temporarily handing over my phone?
Android screen pinning can keep the device on one selected app until it is unpinned with the PIN, pattern, or password. It can help when someone needs to use one app briefly, but it is not an app-hiding feature and does not conceal content visible on the active screen. Google outlines the option in its Android security guidance.
Quick Recap
Choose the layer that matches the exposure
- To restrict access to the whole phone: use a strong device PIN or password, with biometrics as a convenient authentication method.
- To add a prompt before selected apps open: use the platform’s app-lock feature where supported.
- To reduce casual visibility or separate apps: consider iPhone’s supported hidden apps or Android Private Space, while accounting for their platform-specific limits.
- To reduce side-angle viewing: consider a privacy screen protector made for your exact phone model, accepting possible display or touch trade-offs.
