Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteShort answer: choose AirDrop when every device is an iPhone, iPad or Mac; choose LocalSend for a household that mixes Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS; and use Quick Share with AirDrop only when the Android model and software explicitly support the newer interoperability.
The three tools do not use the same network path or offer the same privacy model. AirDrop is Apple’s built-in, direct wireless transfer system. LocalSend is a cross-platform app that keeps transfers on your local network without accounts or third-party servers. Quick Share is built into Android, but its AirDrop handoff is still limited to supported hardware and software, and Google documents a 24-hour server availability window for files transferred through that cross-platform path.

Which one should you use?
| Situation | Best first choice | Reason | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Only iPhone, iPad and Mac devices | AirDrop | Already built into Apple operating systems and uses a direct Bluetooth Low Energy and peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connection. | It is designed for Apple platforms, and the default visibility setting is Contacts Only. |
| Windows, Android, Apple and Linux devices together | LocalSend | One app is available for all five platforms and transfers stay on the local network without an internet connection, account or server. | Every device must be able to reach the same local network; firewall rules and access-point isolation can block discovery. |
| Android phone sending to an iPhone, iPad or Mac | Quick Share with AirDrop, if supported | Supported Android devices can send through a native Quick Share flow to AirDrop. | Interoperability began rolling out with the Pixel 10 family on November 20, 2025. Model and software support must be checked individually. |
| Privacy-sensitive transfer on a reachable local network | LocalSend | The project states that it needs no internet, account or third-party server and uses HTTPS encryption for the exchange. | Local network security still matters, and discovery can fail on isolated or misconfigured networks. |
There is no reliable first-party benchmark that measures all three services under identical conditions. It would be inaccurate to declare one universally fastest for large videos. The practical speed limit is usually the Wi-Fi or wired network, radio quality, device storage and the number and size of files.

LocalSend: a local-network, cross-platform design
LocalSend describes itself as a free, open-source app for securely sharing files and messages with nearby devices over a local network without needing an internet connection. Clients are listed for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. You install the app on each participating device, and the devices discover one another through the local network.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
The project documents TCP and UDP port 53317. A host firewall that blocks that port, or a router configured with client or access-point isolation, can prevent devices from appearing even when they are connected to the same Wi-Fi name. A guest network may also intentionally prevent devices from contacting one another.
The project’s stated operating model is no account, no login and no servers. It says files travel over local Wi-Fi, the exchange is protected with end-to-end encryption and there are no bandwidth limits. Those are design claims from the project, not an independent comparative security or performance audit.
AirDrop: Apple’s direct wireless path
Apple’s security documentation describes AirDrop as using Bluetooth Low Energy for discovery and Apple-created peer-to-peer Wi-Fi for the transfer. Compatible iPhone and iPad devices run iOS 7 or later, while compatible Mac computers run OS X 10.11 or later.
AirDrop is integrated into Apple sharing menus, so there is no separate cross-platform app to install. That makes it the lowest-friction option when all participants use Apple hardware. Its default visibility is Contacts Only, which is a useful privacy baseline but can surprise someone trying to send from a device that is not in the recipient’s contacts.
Quick Share: Android-native, with a limited AirDrop bridge
Quick Share is Android’s built-in nearby-sharing system. Google announced on November 20, 2025 that Quick Share interoperability with AirDrop was beginning to roll out to the Pixel 10 family, with expansion planned for additional Android devices. Google’s current Pixel help guidance says that sending to an iPhone, iPad or macOS device requires a device whose Quick Share implementation supports AirDrop.

That wording matters: the feature is not a universal capability of every Android phone that has Quick Share. Check the exact model, Android version and system-component updates before making it part of a household workflow.
Quick Share includes an Everyone for 10 minutes visibility mode that automatically returns to the previous setting. Transfers between devices using the same Google Account can be auto-accepted. Google also states that files sent through the cross-platform flow remain available for download on Google servers for 24 hours. Therefore, this particular interoperability path is not purely local in the same sense as LocalSend.

LocalSend in practice
What you need
- Install LocalSend on every device that will send or receive.
- Connect the devices to a local network that allows clients to communicate with one another.
- Permit LocalSend’s TCP and UDP traffic on port 53317 when the operating-system firewall asks.
- Keep in mind that a guest SSID or access-point isolation can deliberately block device-to-device traffic.
Sending a file
- Open LocalSend on both devices.
- On the sending device, choose the file or group of files and select the discovered recipient.
- Accept the incoming request on the receiving device, unless that device has an equivalent auto-accept choice configured.
- Leave both devices connected to the local network until the transfer completes, then open the destination location shown by the receiving app.
Because LocalSend does not require an account or internet access, it is the most straightforward answer to the question, Can I send files from Android to an iPhone without Google Drive? Install the app on both devices, place them on a reachable local network and transfer directly.
When discovery fails
- Verify that both devices are on the same reachable LAN, not merely connected to similarly named networks.
- Check the operating-system firewall on each device and allow LocalSend’s documented TCP and UDP port 53317.
- Move both devices off a guest network if that network isolates clients.
- Inspect the router’s access-point or client-isolation setting and disable isolation only on a network where device-to-device communication is appropriate.
- Retry discovery after changing one setting at a time so you can identify whether the firewall or network topology was responsible.
A router is not inherently required for every transfer: the requirement is a functioning local network that permits the two devices to reach one another. If the existing network intentionally blocks that traffic, correcting the network configuration is more useful than repeatedly reinstalling the app.

AirDrop in practice
Why it is best for Apple-only groups
AirDrop is already part of the Apple operating system, and its Bluetooth Low Energy discovery plus peer-to-peer Wi-Fi path avoids the need to put every participant on the same conventional home LAN. That combination removes the app installation, account and port-management steps that can make a mixed-device setup harder.

Sending and receiving
- On the Apple device containing the file, open the system share sheet and choose AirDrop.
- Select the nearby Apple recipient shown by the share sheet.
- On the receiving device, accept the request when prompted and wait for the file to open or save in the destination app.
- If the recipient does not appear, check the AirDrop visibility setting. Contacts Only is the default; a temporary Everyone setting may be needed when the sender is not in the recipient’s contacts.
AirDrop’s ecosystem boundary is the decisive limitation. Apple’s documented implementation covers supported iPhone, iPad and Mac hardware, not a general Windows or Linux workflow. If even one regular participant uses another operating system, LocalSend usually creates a more consistent process.
Quick Share and AirDrop interoperability
Check compatibility before relying on it
The interoperability rollout began with the Pixel 10 family on November 20, 2025. Google’s support wording requires a device with Quick Share support for AirDrop, so the presence of Quick Share alone does not prove that an Android phone can send to an iPhone, iPad or Mac.
- Identify the exact Android model rather than relying on the manufacturer’s broad product family name.
- Install current system and Google component updates available for that model.
- Confirm that the Quick Share interface exposes support for AirDrop or an equivalent cross-platform destination.
- On the Apple recipient, use a visibility setting that allows the sender to be discovered. If necessary, select Everyone for 10 minutes and then allow it to revert automatically.
What the privacy behavior means
Google documents two convenience behaviors: Everyone for 10 minutes is temporary, and devices using the same Google Account can auto-accept transfers. Both can reduce friction, but they should be understood before enabling them on a shared or public device.
For cross-platform transfers, Google says files remain available for download on Google servers for 24 hours. That retention window distinguishes this path from LocalSend’s stated no-server design. It also means that a user choosing Quick Share for an Android-to-Apple transfer should evaluate the server-retention behavior, not only the radio connection used to initiate the exchange.

When Quick Share is the right choice
Use it when the Android device is confirmed compatible, the recipient is an Apple device that can receive through AirDrop, and the convenience of a native Android flow outweighs the documented server availability period. For an unsupported Android model, do not assume that an update or a nearby iPhone will make the feature work; use LocalSend instead.

Privacy is not a single score. LocalSend minimizes dependence on remote infrastructure but exposes more setup to the local network administrator. AirDrop minimizes setup inside Apple’s ecosystem, while its visibility mode determines who can discover the device. Quick Share’s bridge adds compatibility convenience but has a documented server-retention window that privacy-sensitive users should consider.
Which is fastest for large video files?
No comparable first-party speed test covers all three services under identical hardware, network and file conditions. Consequently, a claim that one is always fastest would go beyond the available evidence.
For a large video, the outcome is commonly shaped by:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- the Wi-Fi generation, signal strength and congestion;
- whether the devices are using a direct peer-to-peer link or a busy household access point;
- storage speed and available free space on the receiving device;
- the number of files, because thousands of small items add metadata and setup overhead;
- firewall, encryption and operating-system processing overhead; and
- whether the transfer must traverse a remote service rather than remain on the local path.
In a stable Apple-only setup, AirDrop is often the least complicated starting point because no extra app or LAN troubleshooting is involved. In a mixed household, LocalSend is usually the practical choice because every platform can use the same workflow. A supported Quick Share-to-AirDrop transfer may be convenient, but its rollout scope and server behavior matter more than an assumed speed advantage.

How to get a fair result in your own home
- Use the same pair of devices and the same file for each trial.
- Run the tests from the same room and network conditions.
- Record the elapsed time for one large file separately from a folder containing many small files.
- Repeat each transfer rather than treating one run as a benchmark.
- Note whether the test used LocalSend’s local path, AirDrop’s peer-to-peer path or Quick Share’s cross-platform flow, because these are not equivalent network designs.
Common problems and the right fix
The other device never appears in LocalSend
Start with network reachability, not file permissions. Confirm that both devices are on a LAN that allows client-to-client traffic, then check firewall rules for TCP and UDP port 53317. Guest networks and access-point isolation are frequent intentional causes of invisibility.
AirDrop shows no recipient
Check whether the recipient is limited to Contacts Only and whether the sender satisfies that contact condition. If the exchange is appropriate for the situation, the recipient can temporarily use Everyone for 10 minutes and let the setting return afterward. AirDrop also depends on the supported Apple device and operating-system generations described by Apple.
Quick Share works with Android devices but not an iPhone
That behavior does not prove the phone is defective. Android-to-Apple interoperability requires a supported model and software combination. The rollout began with Pixel 10 devices, and Google says expansion is planned for more Android devices. Verify the exact model and whether the Quick Share interface advertises AirDrop support; otherwise, use LocalSend for a predictable cross-platform route.
A transfer is accepted but the file is not immediately available
For Quick Share-to-AirDrop transfers, remember Google’s documented 24-hour server availability window. For LocalSend and AirDrop, keep both devices connected to the relevant local or peer-to-peer path until the transfer finishes and check the destination app or folder shown by the receiving system.
A practical decision framework
Choose AirDrop when the ecosystem is entirely Apple
It offers the fewest moving parts: built-in sharing, direct wireless discovery and a familiar accept prompt. Keep the Contacts Only default in mind when sending between people who are not already in one another’s contacts.
Choose LocalSend when operating systems are mixed
It is the only option in this comparison with stated clients for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. Its no-account, no-internet and no-server design is especially useful when you want to move files between an Android phone and an iPhone without routing them through a cloud drive. The trade-off is that the local network must be configured to permit discovery and transfer.
Choose Quick Share with AirDrop only after verifying support
It can provide a native-feeling Android-to-Apple exchange on supported hardware, but the feature is not universal. Treat compatibility as a prerequisite, not an assumption, and weigh the 24-hour Google-server availability period against your privacy requirements.
Recommended Free Tools
Bottom line
AirDrop is the best answer for an Apple-only household. LocalSend is the strongest all-around answer for cross-platform file sharing because one app covers Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS while keeping transfers on the local network without accounts or third-party servers. Quick Share’s AirDrop interoperability is a useful additional path for supported Android models, but its rollout remains model- and software-dependent and its cross-platform flow has a documented 24-hour Google-server availability window.
