It fixed several Web Share, Windows, Android TV, and macOS issues, yet later 1.15.x releases fixed more bugs and the project has since published security fixes. The official releases page in the available record lists v1.17.0, released February 20, 2025. For normal use, install the newest compatible official release instead of 1.15.1.
What LocalSend 1.15.1 is
LocalSend 1.15.1 is a version of LocalSend, not a separate product. LocalSend is a free, open-source application for sending files, folders, text, and links between nearby devices on a Wi-Fi network or wired LAN. Ordinary transfers do not require a cloud account or a third-party file-hosting server.

The project supports Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS, although package formats, permissions, firewall prompts, and background behavior vary by platform. LocalSend describes its normal communication model as a REST API over HTTPS, using certificates generated locally on each device. The protocol is documented at LocalSend Protocol v1.
“Local” means the devices must be able to reach one another on the same network path. It does not mean that every network is automatically safe or that internet access is never needed; internet connectivity may still be required to download the app or use a store.

Release date and place in the 1.15 series
LocalSend 1.15.1 was released on July 18, 2024, three days after v1.15.0. The project then issued several follow-up builds in quick succession:
| Version | Date | What the release sequence means |
|---|---|---|
| 1.15.0 | July 15, 2024 | Initial 1.15 series release |
| 1.15.1 | July 18, 2024 | Web Share, Windows, Android TV, macOS, and interface fixes |
| 1.15.2 | July 25, 2024 | Included a receiving memory-leak fix and other platform fixes |
| 1.15.3 | July 29, 2024 | Included an Android back-gesture fix |
| 1.15.4 | August 20, 2024 | Included a sending memory-leak fix and a Windows startup-window fix |
The dates and changes are listed in the official release list and project changelog. This rapid sequence is why 1.15.1 should not be treated as the final or best version of the 1.15 branch.
What changed in LocalSend 1.15.1
This was primarily a maintenance and bug-fix release after 1.15.0, not a redesign of LocalSend.
Web Share
- Added Internet Explorer 8 support for the Web Share interface.
- Preserved the auto-accept state when changing encryption mode.
- Corrected PIN-attempt counting.
Windows
- Fixed crashes when the combined size of selected files exceeded 2 GB.
- Bundled required DLL files to prevent application-startup crashes.
- The 1.15.x line removed the MSIX installer for proper autostart and start-hidden behavior. Windows users were directed to migrate to the EXE installer and uninstall the MSIX version.
Android and Android TV
It fixed a crash that could occur while selecting files or folders on Android TV.
macOS
When LocalSend was installed through the Mac App Store, the non-working autostart control was hidden.

Is LocalSend 1.15.1 safe today?
It is authentic software, but it is not a recommended security baseline in 2026. Being old does not make an official installer malware. The problem is that 1.15.1 predates later fixes, and the LocalSend project now lists vulnerabilities affecting older code.
The clearest confirmed case is the path-traversal advisory for versions before 1.17.0. That range includes 1.15.1 and could allow a nearby device to execute arbitrary commands under certain conditions. See the path-traversal advisory and the project’s security page.
The project also documents a critical man-in-the-middle issue involving unauthenticated UDP discovery and file interception, plus a moderate stored-XSS issue in Web Share. Do not assume that either advisory definitively applies to 1.15.1 without checking its individual affected-version statement: discovery/MitM advisory and Web Share XSS advisory.

HTTPS/TLS protects transfer traffic in the normal protocol flow, but transport encryption is not identical to guaranteed end-to-end security. Discovery, acceptance controls, browser-based sharing, local-network attackers, and implementation bugs remain relevant.

Should you download 1.15.1?
For ordinary users: no
Use the newest compatible stable build from the official releases page, or an app/package store explicitly listed by the project. LocalSend does not provide an automatic updater, so installing from a maintained distribution channel matters.
For testing or archival work: sometimes
1.15.1 can be justified for a pinned deployment, reproducibility project, legacy workflow, regression investigation, or offline archive. Keep the use controlled:
- Download the file from the official historical release page.
- Use a trusted, isolated LAN rather than a public or unknown network.
- Do not transfer sensitive data with the old build when a maintained version is available.
- Keep the exact installer and its checksum if you need to reproduce the environment.
- Upgrade as soon as compatibility testing is complete.
Where the old release was distributed
The v1.15.1 release page provided platform-specific assets, including a Windows installer and portable archive, a macOS package, Linux AppImage, DEB, and TAR archives, Android APK variants, and source archives. Filenames and architecture choices can change, so select the asset directly from GitHub rather than copying a link from a mirror.
For verification, confirm the tag is v1.15.1, match the filename to the operating system and CPU architecture, and compare a SHA-256 hash when the release or package source publishes one. Avoid modified repacks and “old versions” download portals. A Chocolatey page references an official asset and shows hash verification, but it is supplementary rather than the canonical source: Chocolatey LocalSend portable 1.15.1.

Windows ARM qualification
A project issue documents an installation problem on Windows ARM and discusses a special --fix-arm build: issue 1540. Do not assume the standard 1.15.1 installer works universally on ARM hardware.
Compatibility and network requirements
The current project documentation lists these minimum platform versions. They are current project notes, not a guarantee that every 1.15.1 package behaves identically on every modern system.
| Platform | Minimum version listed by the project |
|---|---|
| Android | 5.0 |
| iOS | 12.0 |
| macOS | 11 Big Sur |
| Windows | 10 |
| Linux | Distribution-dependent |
The project says v1.15.4 was the last version supporting Windows 7. Therefore, Windows 7 users should not treat a newer package as interchangeable with 1.15.1, and should weigh the security cost of running an unsupported legacy setup.

How a transfer works
- Devices discover one another on the local network.
- The sender selects files, folders, text, or links.
- The recipient accepts or rejects the request.
- LocalSend transfers the data using its local protocol over HTTPS/TLS.
- The recipient saves the accepted content according to the platform’s storage permissions.
The protocol includes endpoints such as POST /api/localsend/v1/register. Web Share is a separate browser-accessible sharing mode, not merely another name for a normal device-to-device transfer.
Web Share precautions
Use Web Share only on a trusted network. Do not disclose its generated address to unknown users, enable PIN protection where available, and avoid opening unfamiliar transferred filenames in a browser. Because the project has published a stored-XSS advisory for this interface, upgrading before relying on Web Share is especially important.
Installation and first-transfer checklist
- Open the official LocalSend releases page.
- Choose the newest stable release compatible with your operating system.
- Install the official package or a project-listed store version.
- Allow LocalSend through the firewall on a private or trusted network.
- Connect both devices to the same trusted Wi-Fi or LAN.
- Open LocalSend on both devices and wait for discovery.
- Select the receiving device, choose the content, and approve the request.
If you must use 1.15.1, follow the same steps but treat it as a temporary, controlled compatibility build.

Troubleshooting common failures
Devices do not appear
- Confirm both devices are on the same LAN and not isolated guest Wi-Fi.
- Check that AP isolation is disabled.
- Allow TCP and UDP port 53317 through the firewall.
- Grant local-network permission and temporarily test without a conflicting VPN.
- Use the app’s rescan function after correcting the network.
Transfers fail or stall
- Keep both devices awake and check destination free space.
- Confirm storage permissions on the receiving device.
- Test with a small file before retrying a large transfer.
- Check whether antivirus software is holding the file or blocking return traffic.
Windows startup crashes
Version 1.15.1 bundled DLLs to address startup crashes. If one persists, remove conflicting installations, use the official EXE rather than a repack, verify architecture, and test a later 1.15.x or current release.
Android TV selection crashes
This was a stated 1.15.1 fix. Update to a newer official build, check storage permission, and avoid relying on an unofficial APK if the problem remains.
Large-file problems
1.15.1 fixed a Windows crash when selected files totaled more than 2 GB, but later 1.15.x builds fixed additional memory issues. Newer software is the better choice for large transfers.
Alternatives by use case
| Tool | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| AirDrop | Transfers inside an Apple-only ecosystem | Less useful across Windows, Linux, and Android |
| Quick Share | Android and Windows users wanting first-party integration | Coverage depends on Google, Android, and Windows support |
| PairDrop | Temporary browser-based transfers without installing an app | Browser and local-network behavior add compatibility and security considerations |
| Syncthing | Continuous folder synchronization | More setup than a one-off send |
| KDE Connect | Notifications, remote controls, and occasional transfers | Broader and more complex than a dedicated transfer tool |
| Cloud storage | Recipients who are remote or off the local network | Requires a hosted service or account and introduces sharing-link and privacy considerations |
The deciding factors are whether the devices share a network, whether you prefer a native app or browser, one-time sending or continuous synchronization, ecosystem integration, legacy operating-system support, and the vendor’s security-update cadence.

LocalSend 1.15.1 was a legitimate July 2024 maintenance release with useful fixes, but it was quickly superseded and sits behind publicly documented security work. Install a newer official release for routine transfers. Keep 1.15.1 only when a specific compatibility, testing, or archival requirement demands that exact build, and then use it on a trusted, controlled network.
