A local AI agent runs its model on hardware in your home; a cloud agent sends its prompt and any included home context to a hosted service. But the model is only one part of a smart-home setup: speech recognition, device integrations, remote access and speech playback may each use local or cloud services. For most homes, a practical approach is to keep predictable and safety-critical routines in ordinary automations, then use an AI agent for flexible requests with access limited to the devices it needs.
What “local” and “cloud” mean in a smart home
A local agent performs model inference on home hardware. A cloud agent sends a request—and the home information included with it—to a provider’s hosted model. That distinction matters for privacy and internet dependence, but it does not describe the whole smart-home data path.

A voice request may pass through a microphone, speech-to-text engine, conversation model, device integration and text-to-speech engine. Each component can be local or cloud-based. Remote access and the device’s own manufacturer integration can add further services. Calling a setup “fully local” is accurate only if the components and device-control paths involved in the task stay local.

Local vs. cloud agents: the practical trade-offs
| Decision | Local agent | Cloud agent | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data path | Inference can stay on home hardware if the rest of the request path is local. | The prompt and any included home context go to the selected hosted service. | Check speech processing, model requests, device integrations, logs and remote access separately. |
| Internet outage | Local automations and locally connected devices can keep working if their controller and home network remain available. | Cloud inference and cloud-only integrations need an internet connection. | Internet independence does not protect against a power, router, hub or local-network failure. |
| Model capability and response time | Depend on the installed model and available compute; a smaller model may be slower or less capable for some tasks. | Hosted models avoid local inference hardware, but service offerings can change. | Compare the model, task and hardware in your setup; neither option is always smarter or faster. |
| Cost | Requires suitable hardware and uses home electricity; demanding workloads can make the initial hardware outlay substantial. | May involve provider usage charges or a subscription, depending on the service and feature. | Check current provider terms rather than relying on old prices. |
| Voice | Speech-to-text and text-to-speech can run locally, subject to hardware and language support. | Cloud speech services offload processing and may offer broader language support in a particular setup. | Identify which voice components send audio or text outside the home. |
| Setup and maintenance | Offers more control, but the owner may need to choose and maintain hardware, models, integrations and updates. | Provides access to hosted models but depends on the provider and any required account or service. | Match the setup’s complexity to your skills and reliability needs. |
These are architectural tendencies, not guarantees. Home Assistant says local protocols including Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread and ESPHome can operate on the home network without internet, while cloud-only integrations and selected services need connectivity. The actual result depends on the devices, controller, integrations, model, language, network and software version.

Which smart-home tasks should an AI agent handle?
An LLM can interpret flexible language and summarize information, but its output can be wrong. Home Assistant’s AI-agent documentation describes conversation agents usable through Assist or in scripts and automations, with user-configurable access to entities. That is an example of one platform’s controls, not a feature guaranteed across all smart-home systems.
Keep predictable routines in ordinary automations
Use deterministic rules for familiar triggers such as motion, schedules, leak sensors and door states. Those routines do not need an LLM to decide what a trigger means.

Use AI for requests that benefit from interpretation
An agent can be useful when a request is ambiguous or open-ended, or when you want a summary of exposed sensor information. Home Assistant has described local Ollama models and cloud LLM integrations in its AI materials; available providers and integrations can change, so check the current documentation for the platform you use.

- Expose only the entities and actions the agent needs for its task.
- Require confirmation before actions such as unlocking doors, disabling alarms or changing safety settings.
- Keep a manual control path and test how the setup behaves when the internet or a service is unavailable.
For security context, NIST’s 2025 white paper on telehealth smart-home integration identifies measures such as access control, authentication, monitoring, data security, governance and network segmentation. It addresses healthcare integration; it is not a consumer-product certification or an evaluation of smart-home AI agents.

How to tell whether voice processing is local
“Local voice” does not by itself mean “local AI.” Home Assistant describes an all-local voice chain in which speech-to-text, Home Assistant and text-to-speech run on home hardware. Other configurations can send speech to a cloud service, use a cloud LLM or mix local and hosted components. Language coverage and compute requirements vary; a focused local pipeline may support a narrower command set than a more demanding local speech-recognition setup.
- Audio capture: Identify which microphone or voice endpoint receives the request.
- Speech-to-text: Check where audio is transcribed.
- Conversation model: Confirm whether interpretation runs at home or with a hosted provider.
- Device access: Review which entities and actions the agent can use.
- Text-to-speech: Check where the response is synthesized.
- Other services: Determine whether remote access or a cloud-only device integration is part of the request path.

What Matter and Thread do—and do not—make local
Matter is an application-layer smart-home control standard that can operate over local Wi-Fi or Thread. Home Assistant’s Matter integration controls supported devices over those local networks. Google likewise says supported Matter devices can be controlled locally without routing the command to the Nest or device-manufacturer cloud.
Thread is a low-power, IP-addressable mesh networking technology, not proof that a device supports Matter. Check for explicit Matter compatibility and verify that your controller supports the device. Local Matter control can keep a device command on the home network; it does not, by itself, make voice recognition, AI inference, remote access or every other feature local.
How to choose an architecture for your home
- Prioritize local processing if you want to reduce dependence on a hosted model or keep model requests on home hardware, and are prepared to match hardware to the workload and maintain the setup.
- Consider a cloud agent if you do not want to run local inference hardware and accept the provider dependence and data path that come with hosted processing.
- Use a hybrid design when you want ordinary routines to keep working without an LLM, but still value natural-language interpretation or summaries. Home Assistant describes a pipeline that handles understood commands locally before passing unmatched requests to an LLM.
- Test the complete setup by checking the device integrations, voice components, outage behavior, language support, response time, ongoing costs and maintenance—not just the model name.
A local controller is not necessarily a local LLM computer: hardware needs depend on the model and workload. Similarly, a voice endpoint does not establish where speech processing happens; that depends on the selected pipeline and any required additional hardware.
