To run AI locally on a laptop, you need a model that fits the machine, a runtime to run it, and an interface suited to the job. Start with the task—not the biggest model: general chat, coding, image understanding, document search, and tool-assisted work have different model requirements. “Local” also describes the model’s configured route, not necessarily every optional feature in the interface.
What makes an AI setup local?
A local AI setup has two basic parts: the model runtime, which loads and runs model files, and the interface, where you send prompts and view answers. Some desktop apps combine model discovery, downloading, loading, and chat. Other interfaces connect to a separately configured local server or to hosted providers. Open WebUI documents connections to Ollama, llama.cpp, vLLM, LM Studio, LocalAI, Docker Model Runner, Lemonade, and hosted providers; that range is a reminder to check the actual connection rather than infer it from the interface name. See Open WebUI’s provider connection guide and OpenAI-compatible providers and local servers.

LM Studio documents a guided desktop flow: check system requirements, install the app, discover and download a model, load it into memory, then chat. A more configurable arrangement can use a separate server and interface. For example, Open WebUI documents LM Studio’s local server endpoint as http://localhost:1234/v1 and says to start the Local Server tab first. Its llama.cpp example uses a local endpoint and server options for a model, port, context size, and GPU layers. These are documented examples, not universal settings: addresses, paths, context limits, and acceleration choices depend on the installation.

Choose a setup for the job you want to do
General chat and writing
Begin with a small general-purpose model that fits comfortably in memory, then try representative prompts from your own work. Model size by itself does not establish answer quality, and a larger model that strains the laptop may be a poor everyday choice. Check how much memory remains when your usual applications are open, and consider the context length you expect to use; both affect whether the model can run comfortably.
Coding
For code questions or drafting, a chat interface may be enough. If the workflow needs terminal commands, file access, or other actions, check whether the model supports tool calling and whether the interface can safely provide those tools. Libre WebUI lists Qwen Coder and Codestral as coding-model directions, but suitability still depends on the selected model and laptop. Its model guidance distinguishes tool-capable models from ordinary chat use: Working with AI Models.
Image understanding
Text-only models do not automatically understand images. Image prompts require a multimodal model or a configured vision model, and an interface may route turns containing images differently from text-only turns. Confirm that the exact model and runtime support image input before downloading a large model or building a workflow around it. Libre WebUI describes model capability considerations in its model guide.

Document search
Document search typically needs more than a chat model: an embedding model converts text into representations used to retrieve relevant passages, while a chat model generates the answer. These roles are not interchangeable. Libre WebUI identifies nomic-embed-text as an embeddings model, not a chat model, and explains model use in its AI model documentation. Check which parts of your documents are indexed and where retrieval and answer generation run, especially if the documents are sensitive.
Tool-assisted work
Agents or other tool-assisted workflows can search, inspect files, or run commands, but the model must support tool calling and the interface must have the relevant integration configured. That adds setup and resource demands beyond ordinary chat. Libre WebUI says container-backed tasks need additional CPU, memory, process, image, and project storage; a laptop that handles chat may not be equally comfortable running a container-backed workflow. Consult its hardware requirements and model guidance.
Check memory and hardware before choosing a model
Libre WebUI publishes the following as practical starting ranges, not speed guarantees or universal minimums. Actual performance depends on model architecture, quantization, context length, drivers, and concurrent applications. The ranges are from its Hardware Requirements page, accessed October 7, 2026.

| Model size and format | Published hardware range |
|---|---|
| 1B–4B quantized | 8 GB RAM with CPU-only inference |
| 4B–8B | 16 GB RAM with CPU-only inference, or 8 GB VRAM |
| 8B–14B | 12–16 GB VRAM |
| 14B–32B | 24 GB VRAM |
| 32B–70B quantized | 48 GB or more VRAM, or large unified memory |
These figures describe broad capacity examples, not a promise that a particular laptop will run a model at a useful speed. On Apple Silicon, model memory shares the unified memory pool with the operating system and applications. Libre WebUI describes NVIDIA CUDA as broadly compatible for local inference; AMD and Intel support depends on Ollama and platform drivers, while CPU inference remains possible. Verify compatibility for the particular laptop, operating system, runtime, and model rather than relying on a GPU label alone.
- Memory pressure: Model weights are only part of what uses memory; context length and other open applications matter too.
- Ways to reduce demand: Try a smaller model, lower quantization, or a shorter context, and unload models you are not using.
- Extra workflows: Containers and tool-using features can require resources beyond standard inference.
Account for model downloads and disk space
Local models are files downloaded to the computer. LM Studio notes that weights commonly use formats such as .gguf or .safetensors; check the selected model’s actual download size and leave room for additional files if you plan to compare models. Loading a model allocates memory for its weights and other parameters, so available disk space does not mean the laptop has enough memory to run it. LM Studio’s setup steps and model-loading basics are documented in Get started with LM Studio.
Model licenses differ, so review the license for the specific model and intended use. An external SSD can be an optional place to store downloaded model files if internal storage is limited; it is not a requirement for local AI, and storage alone does not make inference faster.

Check data routing and privacy feature by feature
“Local” is a property of the configured inference route. A locally served model can keep its model requests on the configured local infrastructure, but an interface may also offer hosted models, search, plugins, or agent integrations. Inspect the selected provider and enabled features before sending sensitive prompts or files.
Libre WebUI says local Ollama keeps model requests on the configured Ollama infrastructure. For a remote model used with Work, the provider receives the prompt, conversation, tool definitions, and tool results. Those results may contain source text, command output, or directory listings requested by the model. Check the provider’s pricing, retention, and training policies before using sensitive projects. See Working with AI Models and Open WebUI’s Quick Start.

Use a setup sequence that matches your comfort level
For a guided desktop setup
- Check the application’s current system requirements against your laptop and operating system.
- Install the desktop app, then discover and download a model whose file size and capability fit your task.
- Load it and test the prompts you expect to use, watching for memory pressure and whether the context is sufficient.
- Review the model license and the app’s configured data route before using sensitive material.
These steps follow LM Studio’s documented getting-started flow; the available models and exact requirements may change. See LM Studio’s setup documentation.
For a separate interface and local server
- Choose and configure a runtime that supports the laptop, operating system, and model format.
- Start the runtime’s local server, then copy its documented endpoint and any required API settings.
- In the interface, connect to that endpoint and verify that the selected model is the one served locally.
- Test the exact workflow—especially vision, embeddings, or tool calls—rather than assuming a successful text chat confirms every capability.
Open WebUI documents connections to multiple local servers and gives examples for LM Studio and llama.cpp. Follow the current runtime and interface instructions for your installation; example ports and commands should not be treated as defaults for every machine. See its local-server connection guide.
Make the choice by eliminating mismatches
- If you want the least configuration: Start with a guided desktop model manager, then verify requirements, model size, and the actual provider route.
- If you need a separate interface or server: Confirm the runtime endpoint, model format, GPU support, and how the interface selects the model.
- If your task involves images, documents, or actions: Verify vision, embedding, or tool-calling support specifically; ordinary chat working is not proof those features are configured.
- If privacy is the priority: Trace each optional feature’s data path, not just the chat model’s location.
The cited product documentation describes supported configurations and broad hardware ranges, not controlled, independent speed comparisons. There is no universal fastest or best local-AI tool established by those sources; the practical choice is the setup that supports your task on your laptop, with a data route you understand.
