Use caching when the same sufficiently large context is sent repeatedly, batching when independent jobs can wait for asynchronous processing, and routing when different requests can meet their quality requirements on different models. They are workload controls, not interchangeable discounts.
The right comparison is cost per successful task, including retries, cache writes and reads, output tokens, latency, reliability, and quality—not merely the lowest input-token price. Provider terms vary by model, region, retention policy, and request type, so verify current documentation before changing production traffic.

What each cost-control method actually changes
Prompt caching reuses repeated context
Prompt caching keeps reusable processing state for a matching prompt prefix. OpenAI describes the cached material as key-value tensors rather than a store of ordinary tokens. The model still processes the new input needed to answer each request; caching removes some repeated prefix processing rather than making the entire request free.
A cache hit generally requires an eligible prefix to recur. Stable system instructions, tool definitions, schemas, policy text, and shared reference material should appear first. User-specific facts, timestamps, conversation turns, and other changing material should come later. If an early token changes, the remainder of the prefix may no longer match. A short prompt may also fall below a model’s minimum cacheable length.

Providers set their own cache-read and cache-write rates, eligible models, retention behavior, and minimum lengths. A first request can incur a write charge, while later matching requests may receive a lower read price. Expiration, capacity eviction, model changes, formatting differences, or a changed prefix can produce a miss. Reusing a session or connection does not guarantee a hit.
Anthropic’s cost guidance similarly recommends caching repeated context in agent loops and distinguishes cache reads from writes. Its economics cannot be transferred directly to another provider: identical prompts may have different eligibility, retention, and read/write pricing elsewhere.
Batching trades immediacy for a lower asynchronous price
A batch API accepts many independent requests for deferred processing. It fits work that does not need an interactive response, such as offline evaluations, document classification, embeddings or extraction jobs, data-set processing, and large backfills.

OpenAI’s help documentation specifies a 50% discount versus synchronous APIs for eligible batch work, a 24-hour processing window, and no streaming. Google’s Gemini documentation describes Batch API processing at 50% of standard cost with a target turnaround of 24 hours. Anthropic documents a 50% discount on input and output tokens for batch processing.

Those are provider pricing terms, not a cross-provider benchmark or a promise that every model, region, endpoint, or request type qualifies. A batch can reduce token spend while increasing time-to-result, complicating retries, and preventing token-by-token delivery. Check maximum job sizes, cancellation rules, error reporting, data-location requirements, and whether your endpoint supports the needed input and output formats.
Model routing assigns each task an appropriate model
Routing is a policy that chooses a model per request. The cost lever is straightforward: send a task to the least expensive model that reliably meets its quality requirement. A small model may handle straightforward extraction, classification, or constrained formatting, while a more capable model handles ambiguous reasoning, difficult tool use, or high-risk answers.
OpenAI recommends selecting a smaller model when accuracy can be maintained. Anthropic discusses multi-model approaches, but its published material does not establish a universal router, quality threshold, or savings percentage. You must define the quality bar for your application, evaluate representative prompts, and monitor production behavior.
Routing is more than a price lookup. A policy may include confidence thresholds, task classifiers, maximum latency, rate-limit headroom, retries, and a fallback model. If a cheap model fails validation and the request is sent again to an expensive model, the effective cost can exceed that of using the stronger model once.

Side-by-side comparison
| Approach | Best fit | Main cost mechanism | Primary constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prompt caching | Repeated, stable, sufficiently large context | Lower processing price for eligible cache reads, with provider-specific write charges | Prefix changes, expiry, eviction, minimum lengths, or ineligible content can reduce reuse |
| Batching | Independent jobs that can wait | Provider batch-pricing discount | Asynchronous turnaround; streaming may be unavailable |
| Model routing | Mixed task difficulty or quality requirements | Use the least costly model that passes the required quality bar | Requires evaluation, monitoring, fallback rules, and operational complexity |
The approaches address different bottlenecks. Caching reduces repeated computation inside a request pattern. Batching changes when and how requests are served. Routing changes which model serves each request. A workload can use more than one, but a provider’s headline discounts should not be assumed to stack or to apply to every request.
Match the method to your workload
Choose caching for repeated prefixes
Caching is a strong candidate when many requests share a long instruction block, tool catalog, policy, product manual, or conversation history. An agent that calls a model repeatedly while keeping the same tools and rules is a typical fit. Estimate the fraction of input that is identical and the expected hit rate before changing prompt structure.
Choose batching for deferrable volume
Batching fits a queue of independent items where a result later today is acceptable. Examples include labeling a data set overnight, running regression evaluations after a prompt change, extracting fields from an archive, or generating multiple variants for later review. It is a poor fit for chat, interactive copilots, live fraud decisions, or any workflow that needs streaming output.

Choose routing for heterogeneous requests
Routing is useful when easy and hard requests are mixed. A support application may use a lower-cost model for intent labels and a stronger model only for unusual cases. A document pipeline may route short, well-structured forms differently from long, ambiguous contracts. The split is justified only if the cheaper path maintains the application’s accuracy, safety, and formatting requirements.

How to implement prompt caching safely
- Measure repetition first. Log prompt-prefix hashes, prefix length, model, and request outcome. Do not log sensitive content merely to estimate reuse.
- Move stable material to the front. Put system instructions, fixed examples, tool schemas, and shared reference text before user-specific data. Keep changing fields, timestamps, and retrieved passages later.
- Check eligibility. Confirm the model’s minimum cacheable length, supported request type, cache retention, and read/write pricing in the provider’s current documentation.
- Design for misses. Treat a cache hit as an optimization, not a correctness dependency. The uncached path must still fit latency, token, and budget limits.
- Watch prefix stability. Template changes, reordered JSON keys, inserted timestamps, whitespace normalization differences, and model-version changes can lower the hit rate. Version prompt templates deliberately.
- Calculate net cost. Include cache-write charges, cache-read charges, uncached input, output tokens, retries, and requests that miss because of expiry or eviction.
Do not put secrets or data with a retention policy that conflicts with the provider’s cache behavior into a reusable prefix. Confirm the provider’s data-handling and regional terms before enabling caching for regulated workloads.
How to implement batch processing
- Separate eligible work. Build a queue of independent requests with stable identifiers. Keep interactive traffic on a synchronous path.
- Define a completion contract. Decide the acceptable delay, maximum retry time, partial-result behavior, and what happens when a job misses its processing window.
- Validate request support. Check model availability, input format, output format, maximum batch size, rate limits, and whether streaming or tool calls are supported. OpenAI’s documented batch behavior has a 24-hour window and does not support streaming.
- Make jobs idempotent. Use a deterministic item ID and store request status so a retry cannot silently duplicate an output or charge twice for downstream work.
- Capture per-item errors. A batch can contain successes and failures. Record the provider error, retry count, model, and final disposition for every item rather than treating the job as one all-or-nothing response.
- Reconcile the invoice. Compare billed batch input and output usage with synchronous prices for the same model. Include failed, retried, and abandoned items in cost-per-successful-result calculations.
OpenAI and Google both describe approximately 24-hour batch service terms in their cited documentation, while Anthropic publishes a 50% input-and-output token discount. Treat the exact window, discount, and eligibility as changeable service terms rather than permanent guarantees.

- Define quality gates. Specify measurable requirements such as exact-match accuracy, field-level F1, citation validity, policy-violation rate, schema compliance, or human-approval rate. “Seems good” is not a routing rule.
- Create a representative test set. Include easy, typical, borderline, multilingual, long-context, and adversarial cases. Keep a fixed holdout set so model changes can be compared fairly.
- Benchmark candidate models. Measure quality, latency, timeout rate, token use, and price on the same prompts and settings. A lower list price is not a saving if the model produces more retries or human corrections.
- Start with explicit rules. Route by task type, input length, required tools, risk level, or a validated classifier. Keep the first policy understandable enough to debug.
- Add escalation and fallback. Escalate low confidence, schema failures, safety flags, or tool errors to a stronger model. Define what happens when the preferred model is rate-limited or unavailable.
- Monitor drift. Track quality and cost by route, model version, customer segment, and failure reason. Re-evaluate when prompts, models, traffic mix, or provider pricing changes.
Routing can lower average spend without improving every individual request. Report the percentage of traffic sent to each model and the cost per successful task, not only the average token price.
Measure savings with one comparable scorecard
Use the same accounting period and workload definition for all three methods. At minimum, record:
Best Value
- Input and output tokens by model and request type.
- Cache-write, cache-read, and cache-miss counts where exposed.
- Synchronous and batch request counts, completion time, and per-item failures.
- Retries, fallbacks, human corrections, and downstream reprocessing.
- p50 and p95 latency, timeout rate, and availability.
- Task quality, safety outcomes, and acceptance rate.
A useful primary metric is cost per successful task: total provider charges plus directly attributable retry or review costs, divided by outputs that pass the defined quality gate. Report latency and quality beside it. A 50% batch discount can be unattractive if a 24-hour delay causes missed service-level commitments; a cache can be unattractive if most prefixes change before reuse; a cheap routed model can be unattractive if frequent escalations erase its price advantage.
Run a controlled comparison where possible: keep the prompt, output limits, traffic sample, and quality test constant, then change one optimization. No dated independent study in the cited provider material compares caching, batching, and routing under one common workload, so there is no universal savings ranking to apply.
Provider terms that require special care
| Provider documentation indicates | What you must verify for your deployment |
|---|---|
| OpenAI supports prompt caching with model-specific minimum lengths and read/write rates; its batch documentation states a 50% synchronous-price discount, a 24-hour window, and no streaming. | Exact model eligibility, cache retention and eviction, regional availability, endpoint support, batch limits, and current prices. |
| Google’s Gemini optimization documentation describes Batch API processing at 50% of standard cost with a target 24-hour turnaround. | Whether the target is suitable for your service-level objective, which models and request types qualify, and how partial failures are reported. |
| Anthropic documents a 50% input-and-output token discount for batch processing and recommends caching repeated context in agent loops. | Cache read/write economics, model support, retention, and regional or data-residency pricing modifiers. |
These terms were documented by the providers and accessed on October 13, 2026. Pricing, supported models, cache behavior, service tiers, and regional modifiers are volatile; recheck the relevant official documentation immediately before publication and before a production migration.

“We enabled caching but costs barely changed.”
Inspect the actual hit rate and prefix length. A changing instruction near the beginning, an ineligible model, frequent expiry, or a prefix below the minimum length can turn most requests into misses. Stabilize the prefix and compare billed reads and writes rather than assuming session reuse worked.
“The batch discount caused an operational problem.”
Batching was probably applied to work with an interactive deadline. Move urgent requests to synchronous processing, reserve batches for deferrable queues, and set alerts for jobs approaching their allowed completion window.
“The routed model is cheap, but the application is less reliable.”
Review quality by route and the reasons for escalation. Tighten the quality gate, send risky categories directly to a stronger model, or add structured validation before accepting a cheap-model response.
“The measured savings disappeared after a prompt or model update.”
Prompt edits can invalidate cache prefixes, while model changes can alter prices, output length, quality, or eligibility. Version templates and routing policies, run the holdout evaluation again, and compare the full cost-per-successful-task metric after each change.

Quick Recap
A practical selection checklist
- Use prompt caching when a long, eligible prefix repeats and you can tolerate occasional misses.
- Use batching when requests are independent, results can arrive asynchronously, and streaming is unnecessary.
- Use model routing when task difficulty varies and you can prove that lower-cost models meet a defined quality bar.
- Combine methods only after measuring each one separately; do not assume provider discounts stack.
- Verify model, region, retention, endpoint, and request eligibility against current provider terms.
- Judge the result by cost per successful task with latency, reliability, and quality shown alongside it.
