There is no evidence-backed universal winner. Choose OpenDocRouter when your main requirement is one API that lets you try or switch among listed document-parsing models. Choose LlamaParse when you want LlamaIndex’s managed parser, broad documented file support, and production controls. Choose Unstructured’s Workflow Endpoint when parsing is one stage in a larger pipeline that also partitions, chunks, embeds, enriches, and moves data to storage or vector systems.
The products overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Their documented input formats, outputs, workflow scope, limits, and pricing information are not symmetrical. No independent, same-file benchmark establishes that one produces more accurate text or tables than the others. The safest decision is to run representative documents through the finalists and compare the output, latency, failure behavior, and total processing cost your application actually needs.

What each document parsing API is designed to do
OpenDocRouter: a model-switching API for document-to-Markdown parsing
OpenDocRouter is a LlamaIndex platform built around a unified document-to-Markdown API. LlamaIndex’s October 7, 2026 launch announcement describes it as a way to select among listed open-source and frontier models while the service manages versioned recipes and a common API surface. Logan Markewich, the announcement’s author, described it as "a platform for document → markdown parsing using the latest open-source and frontier models." That is a vendor product description, not an independent accuracy assessment.
Recommended Free Tools
The announcement explicitly lists PDF, PNG, JPEG, and URLs pointing to those formats as inputs. It supports synchronous and asynchronous responses. Synchronous responses are documented for jobs of up to 50 pages, while a request may contain at most 500 pages or 50 MB. Those are launch-era specifications dated October 7, 2026; check the live service before designing around them.

OpenDocRouter is most relevant when model choice is part of the problem. A team can evaluate several listed parsers through one request pattern instead of integrating each model separately. The trade-off is that the launch material gives a shorter explicit input list than LlamaParse’s documentation, and it does not by itself establish how each model performs on your scans, forms, tables, or charts.
LlamaParse: LlamaIndex’s managed parsing product
LlamaParse is LlamaIndex’s managed document parsing service. Its developer documentation describes layout-aware OCR and outputs in Markdown, plain text, or JSON. The same documentation says it supports more than 130 file types, a vendor-stated count whose date is not stated in the page metadata reviewed.
Its documented controls are aimed at production use: caching, webhooks, page-level controls, and versioned tiers. These features matter when a pipeline must process large queues, avoid paying repeatedly for unchanged files, receive completion notifications, or vary parsing behavior by page. They do not prove that LlamaParse is more accurate than another service; they describe the operational surface LlamaIndex provides.
LlamaParse is a parser rather than a complete data-preparation system. You may still need separate code for chunking, embeddings, metadata enrichment, storage, and vector-database ingestion unless those steps are supplied by the rest of your stack.
Unstructured Workflow Endpoint: parsing inside a broader preprocessing workflow
Unstructured’s Workflow Endpoint is documented as an end-to-end preprocessing workflow. Its scope includes partitioning documents into structured elements, chunking those elements, creating embeddings, enriching content, and sending results to destinations such as storage systems, databases, and vector stores. The overview describes batch processing and remote data sources, and it documents both REST calls and a Python SDK.
This broader scope is the central reason to shortlist Unstructured. If your application already needs a chain of extraction, semantic preparation, and data movement, a workflow endpoint can reduce the amount of orchestration you write yourself. It is a different proposition from a parser whose primary output is Markdown or JSON.

Which API fits common workflow requirements?
Choose OpenDocRouter for model experimentation or model switching
OpenDocRouter is the clearest fit when your team expects to compare parser models, change models as quality or cost changes, or expose model selection as a configuration rather than a permanent code fork. A shared API and versioned recipes can simplify that experimentation.
Before adopting it for a broad corpus, verify that every required input can be represented by the documented formats. If your collection includes office files, email archives, presentations, or specialized image formats, the launch announcement’s explicit PDF, PNG, and JPEG list is not enough evidence that those files are accepted directly.

LlamaParse is a practical shortlist candidate when one managed service should handle many file types and return a predictable parsing representation. Markdown is convenient for text-centric retrieval, JSON can preserve structured fields, and plain text can simplify systems that do not need layout metadata.

The documented caching, webhooks, page controls, and versioned tiers are useful for production pipelines that process files asynchronously or repeatedly. Ask LlamaIndex which controls and limits apply to your plan, and confirm retention, regional processing, security commitments, and deployment options before sending confidential material.
Choose Unstructured when parsing is only the first pipeline stage
Unstructured is the better conceptual fit when the desired result is not merely extracted text but a prepared corpus: partitioned elements, meaningful chunks, embeddings, enrichment, and delivery to a destination. Remote sources and batch processing can reduce custom ingestion code for teams with many repositories or scheduled jobs.
That convenience introduces more variables to test. Chunking rules, embedding models, enrichment operations, destination connectors, retries, and intermediate storage all affect latency and cost. Compare the complete workflow, not just the text extracted from the first page.
Scanned PDFs, tables, charts, and reading order
A parser decision should start with the documents that cause failures, not the clean PDFs that every service handles easily. Build a test set containing scanned pages, multi-column layouts, forms, tables, charts, footnotes, headers, and pages with mixed text and images.
- Scanned PDFs: check character accuracy for names, dates, identifiers, decimals, and footnotes. Record whether the service exposes confidence information or simply returns text.
- Multi-column pages: inspect reading order. Text can be individually correct yet unusable if the parser interleaves columns.
- Tables: evaluate whether rows, columns, merged cells, units, and repeated headers survive in the output format your application consumes.
- Charts and diagrams: determine whether the result contains useful captions or descriptions, or only nearby text.
- Forms: test labels, values, checkboxes, and handwritten or low-contrast marks separately; ordinary OCR text accuracy does not guarantee field-level extraction.
LlamaParse documentation explicitly emphasizes layout-aware OCR. OpenDocRouter launch material mentions optional layout grounding and common layout classes. Unstructured’s workflow starts with partitioning into elements. These descriptions indicate what each product is designed to expose, but only your documents can show whether the resulting structure is sufficient for retrieval, analytics, or automated decisions.
Outputs, chunking, and vector-database readiness
OpenDocRouter’s documented target is Markdown. That can preserve headings and readable text for retrieval, but you may need additional code to create chunks, attach metadata, generate embeddings, and write vectors.

LlamaParse offers Markdown, text, and JSON. Select the representation according to the consumer: Markdown for human-readable structure, JSON for applications that need explicit fields or page metadata, and text for simpler pipelines. Confirm exactly which layout and page attributes are present in the tier you plan to use.
Unstructured’s Workflow Endpoint covers chunking and embeddings as well as partitioning. Its chunking documentation describes basic, by-title, by-page, and by-similarity methods. That documentation also warns that it concerns the legacy Partition Endpoint and recommends on-demand jobs for production usage and newer capabilities. Do not copy legacy Partition Endpoint examples into a new production integration without checking the current replacement workflow.
Chunk quality is application-specific. A by-page strategy may be appropriate when page boundaries carry meaning, while by-title can preserve sections in manuals or policies. Similarity-based chunking may keep related passages together but can create variable-length segments that complicate indexing and cost estimates. Measure retrieval quality using your own questions rather than assuming one strategy is best.
Limits, asynchronous jobs, and failure handling
OpenDocRouter launch limits
The October 7, 2026 announcement documents synchronous responses up to 50 pages and a maximum request size of 500 pages or 50 MB. For larger or slower jobs, use the asynchronous mode described by the service and design for polling or callback completion. Recheck these limits before launch because they are announcement-era values, not permanent guarantees.
Operational questions for every provider
Ask how the service reports a failed page inside a multi-page job, whether successful pages remain available, how retries are charged, how long results are retained, and whether webhook delivery is authenticated and replay-safe. A pipeline that only handles an all-success response can silently lose documents when one page times out or violates a file limit.

Pricing and credits: what is actually documented
OpenDocRouter’s October 7, 2026 launch announcement describes token-based billing. It states that new accounts receive $5 in credits, paid top-ups start at $10 plus a 5% processing fee, enabling layout adds $0.20 per million tokens, and failed pages are not charged. The announcement also lists input, cached-input, and output rates by model and includes a ParseBench cost-per-1,000-pages column.
Best Value
Those are launch terms. If you quote a model rate, name the exact model, state that the figure was published on October 7, 2026, and check the live pricing and model list before publication or procurement. Token usage can vary with page content, prompts, layout settings, retries, and output length, so a per-page estimate from one file is not a universal cost.
No like-for-like price verdict is supported across OpenDocRouter, LlamaParse, and Unstructured. A fair calculation must use the same pages, equivalent model or tier, layout options, retries, chunking and enrichment steps, storage, and expected volume. Also include engineering time and operational complexity: a cheaper parsing call can cost more overall if it requires substantial post-processing.
A fair evaluation you can run on your own files
Use a fixed, representative corpus and identical downstream requirements. Do not evaluate only clean text PDFs or rely on a vendor’s model benchmark as a substitute for your workload.

- Assemble the corpus. Include the real proportions of scanned pages, native PDFs, multi-column reports, tables, charts, forms, and difficult formats. Keep a separate set of known-answer examples with corrected text and expected structure.
- Define success criteria. Set thresholds for character accuracy, field accuracy, reading order, table usability, metadata completeness, chunk quality, latency, and maximum acceptable failure rate.
- Normalize the inputs. Use the same files, page ranges, image resolution, and preprocessing rules for every provider. Record whether a file is sent directly, through a remote source, or after conversion.
- Run equivalent parser settings. Select comparable output formats and layout options. If one service performs chunking or enrichment, measure both its complete workflow and a parser-only path so the comparison is not distorted by unequal work.
- Score the outputs. Check names, numbers, footnotes, headings, reading order, table cells, page references, and metadata. Have a reviewer inspect failures that automated character metrics cannot capture.
- Test downstream retrieval. Index the resulting chunks and ask the questions your users actually ask. Measure whether answers cite the right section, preserve context, and avoid mixing unrelated pages.
- Measure operations. Record queue time, processing time, callback or polling behavior, retries, partial-page results, rate limits, and recovery effort for the same batch.
- Calculate total cost. Include parser charges, token or page consumption, embeddings, enrichment, storage, failed attempts, and the labor needed to maintain adapters and review queues.
- Review governance. Confirm data handling, retention, encryption, region, access controls, contractual terms, and whether your account permits the intended document categories.
- Choose by failure impact. A service that is slightly more expensive may be preferable when it preserves regulatory fields or reduces manual review; a simpler parser may win when documents are clean and the pipeline already handles every later stage.
Implementation cautions before production
Verify current APIs rather than copying historical examples
Product boundaries and endpoints change. Confirm OpenDocRouter’s current model list, token rates, credits, page and file limits, layout surcharge, and asynchronous API shape. Confirm LlamaParse plan-specific controls, file support, SDK versions, and webhook behavior. Confirm the current Unstructured workflow generation, account URL, SDK compatibility, connectors, and production recommendation.
Separate parser quality from workflow quality
If Unstructured returns chunks, embeddings, and enriched records while another service returns Markdown, a direct output comparison is incomplete. Compare the extracted elements first, then compare the complete ingestion pipeline that your application would operate.
Protect sensitive documents
The available product descriptions do not settle security, retention, geography, or deployment terms for every plan. Obtain those details directly for the account and region you will use. Apply least-privilege credentials, encrypt files in transit and at rest, redact unnecessary personal data, and define deletion behavior for source files, intermediate results, and cached outputs.
A practical decision framework
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Why | Validate before committing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trying several parser models behind one integration | OpenDocRouter | The launch proposition centers on selectable listed models, versioned recipes, and a unified API | Model availability, input formats, per-model token cost, layout behavior, and asynchronous limits |
| Broad file coverage with a managed parsing service | LlamaParse | Documentation claims more than 130 file types and offers Markdown, text, JSON, caching, webhooks, and page controls | The current supported-format list, tier limits, OCR quality on your scans, retention, and regional processing |
| Partitioning through vector delivery in one hosted workflow | Unstructured Workflow Endpoint | The documented scope includes chunking, embeddings, enrichment, batch jobs, remote sources, and destinations | Current endpoint generation, connector availability, chunk behavior, embedding costs, retries, and destination guarantees |
| Offline or local parsing | Investigate LiteParse separately | It is positioned as a local parser rather than a hosted API | Feature parity, supported formats, hardware needs, maintenance, and license terms |
Bottom line
OpenDocRouter is the strongest shortlist candidate for teams that value parser-model choice and a common API. LlamaParse fits teams seeking LlamaIndex’s managed parser, documented support for more than 130 file types, and production-oriented controls. Unstructured fits teams that want parsing tied directly to chunking, embeddings, enrichment, and data movement.
