Yes: a Windows, macOS, or Linux PC can serve as a living-room Steam console. Connect it to your TV, launch Steam’s controller-friendly Big Picture mode, and play from the couch. The key is to choose a computer that fits your space and performance needs—and to check which parts its case and motherboard actually let you replace.
What makes a PC work like a Steam console?
The console-like experience comes from combining a TV connection with an interface and input method designed for couch use. Steam Big Picture is Steam’s TV-and-controller mode; Steam Support says it is available on Windows 10 or newer, macOS 12 or later, and current Ubuntu-based Linux systems. The PC must also have hardware that can connect to the TV, such as a suitable video output and cable. Steam Support’s Big Picture documentation explains the mode and its supported systems.

A controller-friendly interface does not make every game or accessory automatically compatible. Check that your controller works with the computer’s operating system and that the games you intend to play support it. If you want to use the same PC for desktop work or other launchers, that remains possible; the living-room interface is a way to access Steam, not a requirement to turn the whole computer into a closed console.
Choose an operating system with compatibility in mind
Windows, macOS, or Linux with Steam Big Picture
Big Picture can run on the operating systems listed by Steam Support, but the TV connection, controller support, and game compatibility still depend on the specific PC, operating system, and game. Check those details against your existing hardware before buying parts or moving a computer to the TV.

SteamOS
SteamOS is Valve’s gaming-focused PC environment. Valve describes it as retaining PC flexibility, including a desktop mode for installing other launchers and software. That flexibility does not guarantee that every device or game will work: Valve’s SteamOS OEM guidance says device support has to be integrated into SteamOS. If you are considering a non-Valve PC for SteamOS, confirm support for its hardware and the games and software you need rather than assuming Linux compatibility is universal.
What Valve’s Steam Machine does—and does not—tell you
Valve’s Steam Machine is a compact SteamOS PC intended to make living-room PC gaming easier, with the Steam interface and Proton. Valve’s June 4, 2026 announcement describes it as SteamOS hardware. It is a useful example of the category, not a universal parts list for a custom build. Valve’s Steamworks announcement provides the official description.

Valve compared the Steam Machine’s performance to roughly six times that of a Steam Deck. That is a manufacturer comparison, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee of performance in a particular game. In a November 12, 2025 report, PC Gamer quoted Valve engineer Yazan Aldehayyat describing a target of playing every Steam game at 4K60 with some form of upscaling, such as FSR. A stated target is not a verified guarantee. PC Gamer’s report also describes the device’s upgrade access: storage is replaceable and memory uses SO-DIMMs, but accessing the RAM is more involved. Those details apply to this device; they should not be assumed for a different compact PC.

How to judge whether a PC is genuinely upgradeable
“Upgradeable” is not a single feature. One machine may let you add storage but make memory difficult to reach; another may have more accessible parts but little room for a future graphics card. Check the specific model’s documentation and case layout before treating an upgrade as feasible.

- Storage: Confirm the drive form factor, interface, available slots, and physical access. A device-specific NVMe slot or 2280 drive example does not establish what another PC accepts.
- Memory: Check the memory type, number of slots, installed capacity, and whether modules are accessible or soldered.
- Graphics and power: For a discrete GPU upgrade, verify card length and thickness clearance, power-supply capacity and connectors, and whether the case can accommodate the card.
- Motherboard and case: Confirm what components are replaceable, whether standard parts fit, and whether the case offers enough room for future changes.
- Cooling and placement: A compact system in a shelf or cabinet needs adequate airflow. Consider ventilation and noise where the PC will actually sit, not just on an open desk.
- Operating-system support: If you plan to run SteamOS or another Linux-based setup, verify hardware support as well as compatibility with your games and software.
Valve’s Steam Machine illustrates why checking access matters: PC Gamer reports that its storage can be replaced while reaching its SO-DIMM RAM is more involved. For any other computer, use its own specifications and service information instead of carrying that example over.

A compact prebuilt, a DIY small-form-factor PC, and a larger conventional gaming PC can all serve as a TV-connected Steam system. There is no established universal winner or current price comparison here; the right choice depends on your games, display, room, and tolerance for building and maintenance. Use the same questions for each candidate:

- Performance target: Which games do you play, at what resolution and quality settings, and what performance do you expect? A resolution target alone does not establish performance across games.
- Physical fit: Measure the case and the shelf opening, including clearance around the computer for cables and airflow.
- Heat and noise: Consider how the system behaves under gaming load in its intended location. A case that fits physically may still be a poor fit if ventilation is restricted or fan noise is intrusive.
- Couch input: Check how the controller connects and whether you can navigate Steam and the games you play without needing a mouse and keyboard.
- Upgrade access: Identify which components can be changed, how involved the work is, and whether replacement parts will fit the case and power supply.
- Storage: Estimate the space your installed games require, then verify available drive capacity and expansion options on the actual system.
- Compatibility: Confirm support for your chosen operating system, games, controllers, and other software.
Set up Steam for TV and controller use
- Check the connection: Confirm that the PC has a video output compatible with the TV and the necessary cable. The exact connection depends on your hardware.
- Connect and position the PC: Place it where cables reach the TV and where its cooling vents have room to breathe.
- Pair or connect a controller: Follow the controller’s instructions, then check that the operating system recognizes it and that your games support it.
- Open Steam Big Picture: Start Steam and switch to Big Picture mode for TV-and-controller navigation. Steam’s support page describes the mode.
- Test the games you care about: Confirm that the controller, display settings, and any required compatibility features work in those specific games before relying on the setup.
When this approach makes sense
A living-room Steam PC is a good fit if you want to use your existing gaming PC on a TV, prefer the flexibility of a PC, or want to choose a compact system whose parts can be upgraded over time. It is less straightforward when the PC cannot fit or ventilate safely near the TV, when you need guaranteed compatibility across a particular game library, or when a compact machine’s upgrade access does not meet your expectations. Decide based on the actual hardware and games rather than the “console” label.
