If a LiveKit SIP trunk seems to disappear after a restart, first identify what restarted, which deployment you use, and whether the missing item is inbound or outbound. Then check the right project’s trunk inventory and trace the call path. A restart alone does not establish that LiveKit deleted a trunk.
1. Identify what restarted and which trunk is missing
Establish whether you use LiveKit Cloud or run the SIP service yourself. Also identify what restarted: a Cloud worker or agent, a self-hosted LiveKit server, the self-hosted SIP service, or your application. These are distinct components, and their restarts do not point to the same configuration checks. LiveKit’s SIP trunk setup covers Cloud setup; its SIP server guide covers self-hosted service configuration.
Next, establish the project or environment and the call direction. An inbound provider call needs inbound routing checks; outbound calls may rely on a stored trunk or inline settings. Keep those distinctions in view as you work through the checklist.
2. Check the Cloud trunk inventory and ID
For third-party provider trunks in LiveKit Cloud, inspect the project’s Telephony → SIP trunks page, or use the CLI command for the relevant direction:

These inventory checks are recommended in LiveKit’s telephony testing guide. Compare the listed trunk ID with the ID your application sends, and confirm that the request targets the intended project. A trunk visible in one project will not resolve if your app is making the request in another project’s context.
If an API call returns an “object cannot be found” 404, LiveKit says the referenced trunk may not exist or may be inaccessible. Verify both the ID and project/access context using the SIP troubleshooting guide. Do not assume the 404 means a restart removed the trunk.

3. For outbound calls, determine how the trunk is configured
A missing stored outbound trunk matters only if your application expects to use one. LiveKit supports two paths:
Stored outbound trunk
The application references a long-lived trunk configuration object by its ID, commonly through sip_trunk_id. Confirm the object appears in the outbound inventory and that the ID in the request is current. LiveKit describes stored trunks as “long-lived configuration objects that LiveKit caches and reuses” in its SIP outbound trunk documentation.

Inline outbound configuration
An application can instead pass trunk settings inline through the trunk parameter on a CreateSIPParticipant request. In that flow, a stored outbound trunk entry is not required. Check the request-building code and API call before treating an absent inventory entry as the cause. See LiveKit’s outbound calling guide and telephony testing guide.
4. For inbound calls, verify both trunk and dispatch rule
For a third-party SIP provider, an inbound trunk is only part of the route. Check that the trunk exists, that the intended phone number is associated with the provider trunk, and that a dispatch rule matches the trunk and desired destination. LiveKit’s inbound trunk guide and telephony introduction describe these dependencies.

LiveKit Phone Numbers are an exception: the inbound guide says they do not require an inbound trunk. Do not apply the third-party provider trunk checklist to that number type.

For a self-hosted deployment, check the service that runs livekit-sip, rather than relying on a Cloud trunk inventory page. Review the process invocation, active configuration file, and dependency settings:

These are runtime configuration and connectivity checks. They do not demonstrate that trunk records are automatically ephemeral or that a restart deletes them.
6. Follow the request and call evidence
Once you have checked configuration and routing, use the request outcome and call path to narrow the fault:
- An unknown-object 404: Recheck the trunk ID and the project or access context, as described in LiveKit’s troubleshooting guide.
- The trunk is found, but an outbound call fails: Check whether the API request succeeds, then verify provider endpoint, authentication, and transport settings. Compare provider logs and SIP responses; use a PCAP when needed. LiveKit’s testing guide outlines these checks.
- An inbound call does not arrive: Establish whether the provider’s INVITE reached LiveKit. If no INVITE arrived, LiveKit says the problem is upstream of LiveKit; check provider logs and provider-side trunk routing. If an INVITE did arrive, continue with LiveKit’s trunk and dispatch-rule checks in its SIP troubleshooting guide.
What the restart does—and does not—tell you
A trunk appearing missing after a restart is a symptom, not proof that the restart deleted its record. LiveKit’s documentation explains how to inspect trunks, configure inbound and outbound calls, and troubleshoot self-hosted connectivity, but does not establish a general restart-related deletion cause. Use the deployment, direction, inventory, and request checks above to identify what is actually missing.
