You can start a live stream with a phone or webcam; you do not automatically need a capture card, dedicated microphone, or streaming PC. For more control—such as gameplay, overlays, or multiple inputs—use an encoder such as OBS. Choose the workflow first, then match the equipment and output settings to your content, platform, computer, and upload connection.
Choose how you will go live
YouTube documents several routes: mobile, webcam, encoder, and console. The right choice depends on the source you want to show and how much control you need.
| Method | Best fit | What it lets you do |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | A quick stream from a phone | Go live from a mobile device; check YouTube’s current account and feature requirements. |
| Webcam | A straightforward computer-based talk or update | Use a webcam workflow without building a more complex encoder scene. |
| Encoder application | Gameplay, overlays, composed scenes, or additional inputs | Control scenes and sources in software such as OBS, and bring in compatible camera or capture-card inputs. |
| Console | Streaming directly from a supported console workflow | Use the console route documented by YouTube rather than assuming a desktop encoder is required. |
For a simple talking stream, start with the webcam or mobile route. Choose an encoder when you need to combine sources or control what viewers see between segments. YouTube describes encoder hardware options such as microphones, preamps, and cameras; OBS can add a webcam or capture card as a source. These are optional, format-dependent tools, not universal requirements.
Equipment: buy only what your format needs
- Phone or webcam: Use the camera already available if it gives the framing and image quality your stream needs. A separate webcam is an option for a computer-based encoder setup, not a prerequisite.
- Microphone: A dedicated microphone can provide a separate voice input. First check that your chosen workflow detects the microphone you intend to use and that its audio is clear.
- Capture card: Consider one only if you need to bring a compatible external device into a computer-based encoder workflow. It is not needed for every camera, phone, or console stream.
- Computer: For an encoder workflow, the machine must handle your chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Basic compatibility alone does not establish that it can sustain a stream.
- Internet connection: Upload capacity and stability matter. YouTube recommends running an upload speed test and choosing a reliable quality for the connection.
No specific equipment model is evaluated here; choose categories according to the inputs your actual setup requires rather than buying hardware by default.

Set up an encoder in OBS
OBS organizes a broadcast with scenes and sources. A scene is a layout or program state; sources are the inputs shown or heard in it, such as a camera, capture card, or audio input. Exact menu labels can vary by OBS version, so use the current controls in your installed release.
- Check the computer and let OBS suggest a starting point. OBS lists operating-system and GPU compatibility requirements, but warns that meeting them does not guarantee streaming or recording performance. Its Auto-Configuration Wizard can provide a starting configuration. Test the machine with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity you intend to use.
- Connect OBS to the destination. In OBS settings, choose the streaming service or a custom server and enter the stream key using the platform’s official setup flow. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in screenshots, chat, or overlays.
- Set video output. Choose a base canvas for arranging the layout and a scaled output for the stream resolution. Set an output frame rate your computer can sustain. Sixty frames per second can demand substantially more from the machine than 30 fps.
- Set encoder output. Configure video bitrate and audio bitrate for the destination platform and available upload capacity. Use the destination’s current recommendations rather than assuming one bitrate works everywhere.
- Build only the scenes you need. For example, make an opening, main-content, break, and ending scene if those are part of your program. Add only the camera, microphone, desktop or game audio, overlays, and other sources required for those scenes; confirm each source is visible and audible as intended.
- Run a representative test. Include movement and audio similar to the planned stream. Check the platform’s stream-health indicators and resolve warnings before the event.
Choose settings for the platform and connection
Bitrate, resolution, frame rate, codec, and encoder load are related choices. A higher resolution or frame rate can require more upload capacity and more computer resources. The following figures are YouTube’s encoder recommendations on its current guidance page reviewed in 2026; they are platform recommendations, not independent performance measurements or a guarantee that a particular connection or computer will sustain them.

| YouTube output | AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 or 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), and RTMP or RTMPS ingest; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Check the platform’s current instructions when configuring your encoder.
For Twitch, use Twitch’s own current guidance: it describes resolution, frame rate, bitrate, encoder, game, connection, and computer hardware as a balance and recommends CBR where possible. Do not transplant YouTube’s bitrate table to a different destination.

Decide on horizontal or vertical framing
YouTube documents horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 live streams through Live Control Room. Its default vertical view is a center crop of the horizontal format. A third-party encoder can configure both formats according to YouTube’s instructions. Decide the framing before going live: a center crop may not keep important subjects or on-screen text in view, and horizontal and vertical viewing have different discovery and feature behavior.
Check eligibility and run a preflight
Before scheduling or starting a YouTube stream, confirm the account can use the chosen live method. YouTube’s help page states that a channel needs verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and sets the minimum age to live stream at 16. Rules and feature availability can depend on the account and region, so check YouTube’s current requirements before relying on them.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Stream health shows warnings or delivery is unstable | Upload connection, selected bitrate, or ingest configuration | Run an upload speed test, choose a reliable quality, and compare the encoder settings with the destination’s current recommendations. Test again with representative motion and audio. |
| Video stutters or the computer struggles | Encoder workload, resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity | Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point; test a lower-demand output or simplify scenes, then verify the result in a test stream. Minimum compatibility requirements do not guarantee performance. |
| Viewers cannot hear the intended audio | Selected microphone, desktop/game audio, or scene sources | Check the intended audio inputs in OBS and confirm they are active in the scene. Repeat the test with speech and program audio. |
| Camera or external device is missing | Source selection or the workflow used to connect the device | Check that the webcam or capture card has been added as an OBS source and that the selected source is the one connected to the computer. |
| Important content is cut off in vertical viewing | Center crop or framing choice | Review the vertical composition before the event and configure the format using YouTube’s instructions if a center crop does not suit the content. |
| Encoder cannot connect to the destination | Selected service, server, or stream key | Recheck the service or custom server and enter the key through the platform’s official setup flow. Keep the key private. |
