Start with your teams and leagues, identify whether each game is local, national, or out of market, check the channels and blackout rules at your ZIP code, then total the recurring cost and verify your exact devices. Rights are split among league services, broadcast networks, regional sports networks, and live-TV bundles, so no single subscription should be assumed to include every game.
What is the best streaming service for live sports?
There is no universal winner. A service that is ideal for an out-of-market Sunday football viewer may be poor for a fan who needs a regional baseball network, while a league subscription can be excellent for national and out-of-market games but useless for a local blackout. The correct choice follows your viewing map, not a generic ranking.

Use this order:
- List the games that matter. Write down each league, team, competition, and whether you need regular-season, postseason, or special-event coverage.
- Classify the rights. Mark every game as local, nationally distributed, regional, or out of market. The same team can appear in different places during one week.
- Check your address. Enter your home ZIP code into each candidate’s channel and regional-sports availability tool. Local affiliates and regional sports networks are market-specific.
- Calculate the real cost. Use the recurring price after an introductory offer and add every required league package, premium tier, or channel add-on.
- Confirm playback. Check the exact television, streaming player, phone, tablet, browser, and simultaneous-stream allowance you plan to use.
If one service covers only part of your schedule, combine a broad live-TV bundle with a league or team package rather than paying for channels that never show your games.

Leagues sell different packages to broadcast networks, cable channels, streaming platforms, and their own direct-to-consumer products. A single league can therefore have local games on one outlet, a national window on another, a weekly exclusive on a third, and an out-of-market package somewhere else. The Federal Communications Commission’s March 4, 2026 notice summarizes this distributed rights structure across major leagues and media partners.

For football, the league’s viewing guide identifies separate routes including NFL+, CBS/Paramount+, ESPN, Peacock, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube or YouTube TV. That list is a rights map, not a promise that any one subscription includes the whole schedule. Read the schedule by game and market before you subscribe.
Football: match the package to the game window
NFL+
NFL+ is the league’s U.S. streaming service. The league guide describes live local and primetime games on mobile, NFL RedZone, NFL Network, live audio, replays, and on-demand programming. NFL support’s price page, updated January 27, 2026, lists NFL+ at $6.99 per month or $49.99 per year and NFL+ Premium at $14.99 per month or $99.99 per year. The service is U.S.-only and unavailable in U.S. territories.
The key limitation is device and market scope: the guide specifically describes local and primetime live games on mobile, so do not treat NFL+ as a replacement for a television package or for every Sunday afternoon game. Check the current plan description for the screen you intend to use.
Local CBS games and national windows
The NFL guide directs viewers to Paramount+ for local CBS games, NBC and Peacock for Sunday Night Football, ESPN for the games assigned to that network, and Prime Video for Thursday Night Football. Availability can depend on the game, your market, and the current season’s schedule. Confirm the individual matchup in the official league or network listing rather than assuming a network’s entire football inventory is included.
NFL Sunday Ticket
Out-of-market Sunday afternoon CBS and FOX games are separately available through NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube and YouTube TV. YouTube TV says its base plan carries many nationally and locally distributed games, while Sunday Ticket adds those out-of-market Sunday afternoon games. A viewer seeking “every game” must still account for local broadcasts, primetime exclusives, Thursday games, and games assigned to other networks.

Baseball: league packages versus local-team services
MLB.TV and MLB+
Major League Baseball’s 2026 package page lists MLB.TV and MLB+ alongside market-specific services. MLB.TV is designed for broad league access, but territorial restrictions and national exclusivities can prevent a local fan from seeing a particular game live. Read the team’s home-territory and national-window conditions before buying.
A February 10, 2026 Associated Press report described seasonal MLB.TV pricing of $149.99 for the season for non-ESPN Unlimited subscribers, $134.99 for ESPN Unlimited subscribers, or $29.99 per month, with a free month of ESPN Unlimited under that described offer. Those figures are dated secondary reporting and can change at checkout; treat the current official MLB offer as authoritative.

Regional team products
The same 2026 MLB page lists regional options including Detroit Sportsnet, SNLA+, SNY, and MASN+. It describes SNLA+ as streaming more than 140 Dodgers games in the team’s home television territory and notes that national exclusivities or other conditions can apply. A local fan should compare the regional product with a broad live-TV bundle and then verify territorial eligibility using the home address.
Broad live-TV bundles: useful when you need many networks
YouTube TV, Fubo, and Sling are relevant candidates when your schedule spans national networks, local affiliates, and possibly regional sports channels. A complete current price-and-channel matrix is not established here, and headline prices can omit regional availability, introductory terms, or add-ons. Use each provider’s current package page and ZIP-code checker immediately before purchase.
These bundles solve a different problem from a league subscription. They can consolidate local stations and national networks into one guide, while a league or team service may be the only route to a defined out-of-market or regional inventory. If your schedule crosses both categories, price the combination rather than assuming the bundle replaces the league product.

Hulu + Live TV: published features and limits
The Hulu page reviewed for this comparison displayed an ad-supported Live TV promotion of $49.99 for the first month, followed by $99.99 per month. Its premium option displayed $109.99 per month. Promotions, plan names, taxes, and terms can change, so use the checkout page for your address and signup date.
The package advertises more than 100 live channels, sports access, Disney+ and ESPN Select components, and unlimited DVR. Listed sports availability includes college football and NFL programming on ESPN, ABC, BTN, FOX, FS1, CBS, ACC Network, SEC Network, NFL Network, and other channels, with local availability varying by market.
The default allowance is two simultaneous screens. Hulu’s Unlimited Screens add-on allows unlimited screens at home and three on the go. That is a household-use feature, not additional league rights: it changes how many devices can watch, not which games the plan carries.
How to compare services without missing a deal-breaker
| Comparison axis | Question to answer | Evidence you should verify |
|---|---|---|
| League and team coverage | Does the service carry the exact games, including postseason and special events? | Official league “where to watch” page and the current schedule |
| Local versus out of market | Is the game local, nationally exclusive, regional, or outside your home territory? | Home-market definition, blackout and territorial rules |
| Channels and ZIP code | Are the needed local affiliates, national networks, and regional sports networks available at your address? | Provider ZIP-code results, not a national channel list |
| Recurring price | What will you pay after the promotion, and which add-ons or separate packages are mandatory? | Checkout total, renewal price, taxes, and cancellation terms |
| Devices and screens | Does the app run on your exact model, and how many simultaneous streams are allowed? | Current supported-device list and plan screen limits |
| Viewing features | Do you need DVR, replay, audio, mobile viewing, or a connected-TV app? | Plan feature list and restrictions by device |
Step-by-step: choose a service for your own schedule
- Create a game inventory. Record the league, team, competition, date, and preferred device. Include playoffs, championship events, and games you watch only occasionally.
- Use the league’s official viewing guide. Assign each game to its listed broadcaster, streaming service, league package, or regional outlet. Do not infer rights from last season.
- Label market status. For every game, write local, national, regional, or out of market. Local and regional games are the most likely to depend on your ZIP code and blackout rules.
- Run ZIP-code checks. Enter the address where you watch, not a billing address in another state. Save the exact local stations and regional networks shown for each plan.
- Build the minimum combination. Remove any service that does not supply a required game. Then choose the smallest set of remaining subscriptions that covers the schedule.
- Compute recurring cost. Replace teaser prices with renewal prices, convert annual plans to a seasonal monthly equivalent for comparison, and include add-ons and separate league packages.
- Check device support. Verify the exact TV model, streaming player, game console, browser, phone, and tablet. Confirm whether mobile-only viewing applies.
- Check household use. Compare simultaneous-stream limits with the number of people who watch at once, including anyone watching away from home.
- Recheck before paying. Rights, prices, promotions, channels, device support, and blackout policies are volatile. Take a final look at the provider’s current checkout and the league’s current schedule.
Can I watch local games without cable?
Often, yes, but “without cable” does not mean “without a market check.” A live-TV streaming bundle may carry local broadcast affiliates and a regional sports network, while a league service may block the same team’s home games or offer them only after a delay. Enter your ZIP code into the bundle’s availability tool, then read the league’s territorial and national-exclusivity language for the teams you follow.
Local availability can differ between neighboring ZIP codes. A provider’s national channel list therefore cannot establish that your local CBS, FOX, ABC, NBC, or regional sports network is included. If a local station is missing, the bundle may not solve the game even when its headline channel count looks sufficient.

How to calculate the real price
Separate promotion from renewal
Use the first-month price only to model the introductory period. For the longer season, use the recurring renewal price. For example, the reviewed Hulu offer costs $49.99 for month one and $99.99 per month thereafter on the ad-supported plan; using $49.99 as the ongoing cost would understate the season’s expense.
Include every required layer
Add the live-TV bundle, league package, regional service, premium network tier, and any device or screen add-on that your game inventory requires. A low-cost league subscription can become an expensive solution if local and national games still require two other outlets.
Compare unlike billing periods carefully
Annual NFL+ and MLB.TV prices cover a season or year, while live-TV bundles usually renew monthly. Convert each to the period you actually need, and check whether an annual plan renews automatically. The February 2026 MLB.TV figures are a useful example of why subscriber status and promotional eligibility must be checked before relying on a quoted price.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What devices can I watch sports on?
Compatibility is service-specific. The Hulu page reviewed lists Apple and Android phones and tablets, Apple TV, Chromecast, Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, Mac and PC web browsers, selected LG and Samsung televisions, Nintendo Switch, Roku, Xbox, Android TV, PlayStation 4 and 5, and selected Vizio models. The exact model and operating-system version still matter; consult the current support list before subscribing.
Recommended Free Tools
NFL+ descriptions emphasize mobile live local and primetime viewing, so a phone or tablet may be required for those streams even if another NFL package supports a television app. A service’s presence in a device’s app store does not guarantee that every plan feature works there.

If your television lacks the required app, first check whether a compatible streaming player, game console, or built-in casting option is already available. A separate Roku device is only relevant when the existing TV cannot run the app; Hulu lists Roku support but does not establish that any particular model is necessary. Likewise, an HDMI cable is optional for connecting a computer to a TV and is unnecessary for most native app setups.
Practical examples of choosing the minimum combination
An out-of-market Sunday football viewer
Start with the team’s Sunday afternoon schedule and mark which games are outside your local market. Check whether NFL Sunday Ticket is available for those CBS and FOX games through YouTube or YouTube TV. Then account separately for Sunday Night Football, Thursday Night Football, Monday or other national windows, and any local games. NFL+ alone is not a substitute for that out-of-market package.
A fan who follows one local baseball team
Check the team’s home-territory definition and the regional service listed for that market. Compare its season price and game count with a live-TV bundle carrying the local regional sports network. Then identify nationally exclusive games that neither local product may carry live. SNLA+’s described inventory of more than 140 Dodgers games illustrates why a team package can be more targeted than a national channel bundle.
A household watching several sports
List the national networks, local affiliates, and regional channels needed across all leagues. A broad bundle may reduce app switching, but verify its ZIP-specific lineup and add-ons. Compare the two-screen default or any unlimited-screen option with the household’s simultaneous viewing pattern before treating a higher tier as worthwhile.
Blackouts, missing channels, and playback problems
The game is listed but unavailable
- Confirm that the game is not subject to a home-market blackout or national exclusivity.
- Check that the account’s home ZIP code is correct and that location permissions are enabled when the service requires them.
- Compare the game’s listed broadcaster with the package you purchased; a league subscription does not necessarily include every network window.
A local channel or regional network is missing
- Repeat the provider’s ZIP-code lookup and verify the exact plan tier.
- Check whether the channel is an add-on or unavailable in that market.
- Use the league’s viewing guide to identify an alternate authorized outlet for that game.
The app works on one screen but not another
- Compare the device model and operating system with the service’s current supported-device list.
- Update the app and device software, then sign out and back in.
- Check simultaneous-stream limits; a second household viewer may have exhausted the plan allowance.
- If a feature is mobile-only, switch to the supported phone or tablet instead of assuming the television app is defective.
A one-page decision worksheet
Before subscribing, write these six lines:
- Teams and leagues: the exact clubs, competitions, and postseason events.
- Required games: the minimum games you will actually watch.
- Rights source: the network, league service, regional service, or out-of-market package for each game.
- Market status: local, national, regional, or out of market, with blackout notes.
- Monthly or seasonal total: renewal prices plus add-ons and separate subscriptions.
- Playback setup: television or player model, mobile devices, browser, and simultaneous viewers.
Any unanswered line is a reason to pause before paying. Sports subscriptions change more often than ordinary entertainment packages because schedules, rights, local carriage, promotions, and device support can all move during a season.
Bottom line
Choose by game, market, price after promotion, and exact device—not by the largest channel count. Use a live-TV bundle when you need local and national networks together, a league or team service when it supplies a defined package, and a separate out-of-market product when your schedule requires it. Verify the ZIP-code lineup, blackout terms, renewal price, and device support immediately before checkout.
