If Live Recognition will not open or detect anything, first make sure VoiceOver is on, then use the four-finger triple-tap gesture. In the Live Recognition view, enable the detection category you need and aim the rear camera at the scene. These are checks based on Apple’s documented operation, not a guaranteed repair sequence; Apple’s guides do not list a dedicated troubleshooting procedure for failures.
Before troubleshooting: check your device and software version
This guide covers the iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 wording in the title. Menu labels and paths can differ between software versions, so check your installed version and device before following a path below. If your Settings app does not match, use the relevant Apple guide for your version rather than assuming the path is unchanged.

1. Turn on VoiceOver before using the launch gesture
Apple documents Live Recognition’s four-finger triple-tap gesture for use while VoiceOver is on. If VoiceOver is off, that gesture will not launch Live Recognition. Check Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver and turn VoiceOver on before trying the gesture.

- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
-
2. Use the four-finger triple-tap gesture
With VoiceOver enabled, triple-tap the screen with four fingers to start Live Recognition. Apple documents this gesture for both iPhone and iPad. If you have been tapping with one finger or using a different gesture, try the documented one.
-
3. Toggle Live Recognition off and back on
The same four-finger triple-tap turns Live Recognition off. Try the gesture once to stop it, then again to start it. If the VoiceOver cursor is focused on a Live Recognition interface element, Apple also documents a two-finger scrub to stop the feature.

4. Select and enable the detection control you need
Opening Live Recognition does not necessarily mean every detection category is active. In its view, find the relevant control—such as scenes or text—or turn on Ask if you want to ask about an image or your surroundings. Select a category and double-tap to toggle it on or off.

5. Aim the rear camera at the scene
Surroundings detection depends on the rear camera seeing what is around the device. Point that camera toward the intended scene and adjust the device’s position if the view is blocked or directed elsewhere.

6. Check Ask settings separately from scene detection
If scene detection works but Ask does not, inspect Ask rather than treating it as a failure of all Live Recognition. Apple documents a default “What is this?” question, custom questions, Speak or Type input, and a control for whether Ask is active. On iPhone, open Settings > Accessibility > Live Recognition. On iPad, open Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver > VoiceOver Recognition > Live Recognition.
-
7. Verify support for the specific feature and language
Eligibility depends on the function. Apple says detection of people, doors, and furniture is available only on supported iPhone and iPad models; that does not establish the same model requirement for every Live Recognition control. Apple Intelligence-related image and screen functions also have device, language, and region requirements. Check the exact feature in Apple’s iOS and iPadOS feature availability list rather than applying one universal eligibility rule.

8. Ask whether the device is managed by a school or employer
On some supervised devices, an administrator can disable Live Recognition’s Ask about Images and Surroundings features through a vision accessibility configuration. Apple says this requires supervision and Automated Device Enrollment; the implementation can depend on the management service. If the device belongs to an organization, ask its administrator whether this restriction is configured.

9. Try a supported shortcut to reach an alternative
Apple documents Accessibility Shortcut as another way to access the feature or an alternative. On iPhone, configure it through Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut; depending on the model, Back Tap or the Action button can also be assigned. On iPad, select Live Recognition under Accessibility Shortcut, then triple-click the Top or Home button. When VoiceOver is off, Apple says the shortcut opens Magnifier Detection Mode.

10. Try Magnifier Detection Mode or contact support
Magnifier includes Detection Mode for live descriptions, with controls for categories such as scenes, people, doors, furniture, text, and Point & Speak. See Apple’s iPhone Detection Mode guide. If the documented settings, gesture, camera positioning, and eligibility do not explain the problem, contact Apple Support or your organization’s administrator. Apple’s reviewed guides do not identify a specific reset or other guaranteed fix.
Where to find Live Recognition settings
| Device | Settings path | Options Apple documents |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone | Settings > Accessibility > Live Recognition | Default Question, Speak or Type, Use Volume Buttons to Recapture, Live Recognition Rotor, and Activities |
| iPad | Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver > VoiceOver Recognition > Live Recognition | Question, input, recapture, and rotor settings |
When not to rely on VoiceOver Recognition
Apple warns: “VoiceOver Recognition should not be relied upon in circumstances where you could be harmed or injured, in high-risk situations, for navigation, or for the diagnosis or treatment of any medical condition.” Treat descriptions as an accessibility aid, not as a substitute for safe navigation or medical advice.
For device-specific operation, see Apple’s guides for VoiceOver Recognition on iPhone and VoiceOver Recognition on iPad. For shortcut behavior, see Apple’s iPhone Accessibility Shortcut instructions.
