Neither battery design is automatically safer or longer-lived. A built-in lithium-ion controller is convenient to recharge but eventually depends on the condition of a sealed or model-specific pack. A controller using replaceable cells can be restored to full runtime by swapping batteries, provided you use the chemistry and voltage its manual approves. The sensible choice depends on the exact controller, how you play, and whether you value charging convenience or long-term serviceability.
What the comparison actually covers
“Lithium-ion” and “replaceable batteries” describe different aspects of a controller. Lithium-ion identifies a rechargeable cell chemistry. Replaceable describes how the battery is installed and serviced. A replaceable controller may use disposable alkaline AA cells, rechargeable nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) AA cells, or a model-specific rechargeable cartridge. Those options are not interchangeable.

For example, Sony’s CFI-7019 PlayStation 5 safety guide identifies the controller as containing a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Microsoft’s Xbox Elite Series 2 repair guidance describes either a built-in or removable-cartridge lithium-ion rechargeable battery. By contrast, Nintendo documents two AA alkaline or NiMH batteries for each Joy-Con AA Battery Pack, and HTC recommends alkaline or NiMH AA batteries for Vive Cosmos controllers. The US safety instructions returned for the Luna controller specify new 1.5-volt alkaline AA cells instead. The label “AA” alone therefore does not prove that a rechargeable cell is safe or supported.

| Controller arrangement | Main hazards identified by manufacturers | What the owner should do |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in or cartridge lithium-ion pack | Damage, an unsuitable replacement, modification or incorrect handling can lead to overheating, expansion, venting, leakage or a thermal event. | Use the specified charger and model-specific replacement parts. Do not open, modify or substitute a damaged pack. |
| Replaceable alkaline or NiMH cells | Leakage, chemical burns, reversed polarity, short circuits, mixed cell types or leaving exhausted cells installed. | Insert cells in the marked direction, remove depleted cells promptly, never recharge a non-rechargeable alkaline cell, and follow the manual’s storage instructions. |
Microsoft’s Elite Series 2 guidance specifically warns about lithium-ion batteries that are incompatible, reused, modified or handled improperly, and recommends genuine replacement parts. Mattel’s controller battery information warns that leaking cells can cause chemical burns or damage and stresses correct polarity, removal of exhausted batteries and avoidance of short circuits. The US Luna instructions add that owners should not mix old and new batteries and should remove worn batteries before extended storage. These precautions do not provide comparative incident rates; they explain how to reduce risk in each design.
For either arrangement, stop using hardware that becomes unusually hot, shows visible damage or behaves erratically after a battery problem. Do not try to puncture, crush, open or “reset” a swollen lithium-ion pack. Keep damaged cells away from combustible materials and use the manufacturer’s support or disposal route. For a leaking AA cell, avoid skin and eye contact, remove it with appropriate care and follow the product’s cleaning and disposal guidance rather than scraping contacts aggressively.
“Lifespan” has three different meanings
Many battery arguments compare unlike measurements. Separate these questions before choosing a controller:
- Runtime: How long one charge or one set of cells powers the controller in your play pattern.
- Rechargeable-cell cycle life: How many charge-and-discharge cycles a NiMH or lithium-ion cell can deliver before its capacity falls materially. The official documents reviewed here do not establish a matched cycle count for controller systems.
- Controller service life: How long the controller remains usable, including the point at which a built-in pack has degraded and needs repair or replacement.
A replaceable system can restore runtime immediately by installing another approved cell set, but its compartment, contacts, buttons and wireless electronics still age. A built-in pack may provide years of convenient charging yet eventually require a model-specific repair. No controlled test in the cited manufacturer material establishes that either arrangement lasts longer overall, has a lower failure rate or is safer in normal use.
Capacity also changes with conditions. Vibration motors, a headset or accessory port, high wireless traffic, display or lighting features, temperature and the age of the cell can all alter runtime. A larger stated capacity is not a guarantee of longer play if the controller draws more power or the replacement is not electrically compatible. To compare your own setup honestly, record the model, approved chemistry, starting charge, play features in use and elapsed time over several sessions instead of relying on one unusually long or short session.
Built-in lithium-ion controllers
Advantages
- The battery, charging circuit and connector are designed together, so there is no routine cell installation or polarity check.
- Charging can be integrated into the controller’s normal cable or dock workflow.
- The pack can be fitted to the controller’s shape and power requirements without leaving space for a removable AA compartment.
- There is no need to keep a second pair of cells charged or carry loose batteries during a session.
Trade-offs
- When the pack is empty, you generally need to connect the controller to power or wait for charging rather than insert a fresh pair of cells.
- Capacity loss is not solved by buying any lithium-ion cell of the same physical size. Microsoft’s repair guidance makes correct, genuine, model-specific parts and competent handling relevant.
- A user should not infer that every integrated pack is sealed forever or, conversely, that every one is an easy user repair. Access, part availability and repair instructions vary by model.
- A cable, dock or charging connector becomes part of the ownership routine. Damage to the port can complicate charging even when the battery itself is healthy.
Do not continue using a controller that shows swelling, unusual heat, visible damage, leakage or a damaged charging port. Disconnect it from power, keep it away from combustible material and follow the manufacturer’s support or repair route. Do not puncture, crush, open or modify the pack.
When capacity has declined, ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider whether the pack is replaceable and which part is approved. A repair may restore runtime, but it does not make worn thumbsticks, switches, contacts or wireless components new. Conversely, a controller that has a removable lithium-ion cartridge still requires the exact cartridge and charging method specified for that model.

Controllers with replaceable cells
Alkaline AA cells
Alkaline cells are disposable. The US Luna safety instructions specify new 1.5-volt alkaline AA cells, which illustrates that a controller can require a particular chemistry even when the compartment accepts a physically similar NiMH cell. Alkaline cells also need prompt removal when depleted or when the controller will be stored, because leakage can damage contacts and electronics.
Use cells from the same set when possible. A partly used cell paired with a fresh one can produce uneven discharge and makes it harder to identify which cell is exhausted. Never attempt to recharge an alkaline cell, and do not assume that a USB cable connected to the controller provides a safe charging path for cells in the compartment.
Rechargeable NiMH AA cells
Nintendo’s Joy-Con AA Battery Pack documentation allows alkaline or NiMH AA batteries, and HTC recommends alkaline or NiMH rechargeable batteries for Vive Cosmos controllers. Where a manual explicitly permits NiMH, a matched set of quality NiMH cells and a compatible NiMH charger can reduce disposable-cell waste and let you keep a charged spare set ready. The charger must be intended for the cell type; a controller’s charging cable is not automatically a NiMH charger.
NiMH cells are not universally approved. Do not treat “AA fits” as compatibility evidence, and do not substitute rechargeable lithium-ion cells designed to look like AA batteries unless the controller manufacturer expressly specifies them. Voltage, charging control and protection requirements differ. Check whether the manual calls for standard NiMH, a particular voltage, or a proprietary rechargeable pack before purchasing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPractical benefits and limitations
- Benefit: A depleted set can be removed and replaced in seconds, avoiding a forced cable connection during play.
- Benefit: With approved NiMH cells, an external charger can charge a spare set while another set is in use.
- Benefit: The controller can remain usable after one cell set reaches the end of its useful life, assuming replacement cells remain available and the electronics are sound.
- Limitation: You must manage polarity, cell matching, charging and storage.
- Limitation: Leaking cells, dirty contacts or an unsupported chemistry can disable or damage the controller.
- Limitation: A spare set, charger and safe storage add items to carry and maintain.
Nintendo states that the alkaline batteries included with and recommended for its Joy-Con AA Battery Pack can fully charge a Joy-Con approximately once. That is a narrow product reference, not a general AA runtime rating or a comparison with a lithium-ion controller. Nintendo also notes that cells left in the pack continue supplying power after the controller is fully charged, so remove them according to the accessory’s instructions when it will not be used.
How to check whether rechargeable AA cells are allowed
Use this process before buying cells or a charger:
- Identify the exact model and region. Record the controller name, revision and, where shown, model number. Instructions can differ between accessories and countries.
- Open the official manual or support page. Look for “battery,” “power,” “safety,” or “specifications,” not just the size printed on the compartment.
- Read the chemistry and voltage language. Confirm whether it says alkaline, NiMH rechargeable, a proprietary pack, or another specific type. If NiMH is not named, treat it as unsupported unless the manufacturer confirms otherwise.
- Check charging instructions. Determine whether cells are charged inside the controller, only in an external charger, or not rechargeable at all.
- Match the replacement exactly. Use the stated count, voltage and polarity. For a lithium-ion pack, use the specified replacement part or an authorized repair path rather than a generic cell.
- Keep the documentation with the controller. This prevents a later user from assuming that another AA chemistry or charger is acceptable.
If the manual is unclear, ask the manufacturer using the exact model number and quote the proposed chemistry. A retailer listing, an online comment or the fact that a cell fits physically is not a substitute for the controller’s electrical and charging specification.
Safe handling routines
For lithium-ion packs
- Use the supplied or approved charging equipment and keep vents and connectors unobstructed.
- Stop using the controller if the pack is swollen, cracked, leaking, unusually hot or physically damaged.
- Do not install a salvaged, modified or unverified replacement. Microsoft recommends genuine replacement parts for the Elite Series 2.
- Have a qualified service provider handle battery replacement when the design requires opening the controller.
- Do not store a visibly damaged pack in a drawer, bag or vehicle where heat and pressure can worsen the problem.
For replaceable alkaline or NiMH cells
- Insert every cell with the polarity shown in the compartment.
- Use a complete matched set; do not mix old and new cells or different chemistries.
- Never place alkaline cells in a charger. Charge NiMH cells only with a charger designed for NiMH.
- Remove exhausted cells promptly. Inspect for leakage before installing replacements and clean contacts only as the manufacturer permits.
- Remove cells before long-term storage when the manual advises it, including the US Luna instructions and HTC’s Vive Cosmos guidance.
- Keep loose cells from contacting metal objects that could short the terminals.
- Store spare cells in a case that prevents terminals from touching keys, coins or other conductive objects.
Cost and ownership burden
The purchase price of a controller does not answer the battery question by itself. A replaceable-cell setup may require recurring alkaline cells, or NiMH cells plus a suitable charger and a spare set. A built-in system may require no accessory at first but can create a model-specific repair or replacement cost when capacity falls. The manufacturer material cited here does not establish current prices, repair charges, part availability or a universal cost advantage.

Compare the items you would actually buy: approved cells or a replacement pack, a compatible charger where required, shipping or service fees, and any downtime while a repair is completed. Also consider whether you already own a charger that is explicitly compatible with the proposed NiMH cells. Do not count an unverified generic lithium-ion pack as a cheaper alternative to a genuine part.

| Your priority | Usually the better fit | Reason and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Fastest, simplest charging routine | Built-in lithium-ion | Connect the controller to its approved charger; no cell handling is required. |
| Instant swap during a long session | Replaceable cells | A charged, approved set can replace a depleted set, provided the manual allows that chemistry. |
| Freedom to refresh runtime after capacity loss | Replaceable cells | The cell set is user-replaceable. This does not prevent wear in the controller itself. |
| Fewest battery-management decisions | Built-in lithium-ion | There is no polarity, cell-matching or external NiMH-charger routine, but eventual repair remains model-specific. |
| Lowest dependence on a specific replacement pack | Replaceable cells | Common cell formats may be easier to keep on hand, but only approved chemistry and voltage are acceptable. |
| Maximum confidence about long-term service | Whichever has documented replacement support | Check the manufacturer’s repair instructions and genuine-part path; battery format alone does not answer this. |
| Frequent travel or shared use | Depends on the manual and packing routine | Replaceable cells permit a spare set, while a built-in pack avoids loose cells. Protect either design from heat, impact and accidental shorting. |
For a controller whose manual supports NiMH AA cells, buying a compatible NiMH charger and a spare matched set is a practical setup. For a controller with a declining built-in pack, seek a genuine model-specific replacement or authorized repair rather than improvising with another battery.
Common mistakes and what to do instead
“All AA batteries are interchangeable.”
They are not. Nintendo and HTC explicitly mention NiMH support for particular products, while the US Luna instructions specify alkaline cells. Read the exact manual.
“Rechargeable means safer.”
Rechargeability does not remove hazards. Lithium-ion damage can create severe heat and fire risks; NiMH charging still requires the correct charger and cells; alkaline leakage can damage electronics.
“A bigger battery always gives longer life.”
Runtime depends on capacity, controller power draw, wireless conditions, vibration, headset or accessory use, temperature and battery condition. The cited official sources do not provide a controlled, same-condition runtime comparison.
“A replaceable battery makes the controller last forever.”
It only makes the cell replaceable. Switches, thumbsticks, contacts, circuit boards and wireless components can still fail, and unsupported cells can cause damage.
“A built-in pack cannot be replaced.”
Some packs are serviceable with model-specific parts and skills, while others require professional service. Confirm the design and support route for your exact controller.

“I can leave depleted cells installed until I play again.”
That increases the chance of leakage and contact damage. Remove exhausted cells promptly and follow the product’s long-term storage direction.
“Any USB cable can charge any controller safely.”
Use the charging equipment and procedure specified for the controller. A cable may supply power without being an approved charger for a removable cell, and a NiMH cell should never be charged through an improvised connection.
Bottom line
Choose by documentation and ownership priorities, not by a blanket safety or lifespan claim. Built-in lithium-ion is convenient and compact, but its eventual battery service depends on the correct part and safe repair. Replaceable alkaline or NiMH cells make swapping easy, yet they require strict attention to chemistry, polarity, charging and storage. The available manufacturer guidance supports careful, model-specific decisions; it does not establish that one system is categorically safer or longer-lived.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are rechargeable batteries safer than replaceable batteries in a controller?
Not categorically. A built-in lithium-ion pack has overheating, swelling, leakage and thermal-event risks if damaged or replaced incorrectly. Replaceable alkaline or NiMH cells have leakage, polarity, short-circuit, mixing and charging risks. Follow the exact controller manual for either design.
Do AA rechargeable batteries work in my controller?
Only if the exact manual permits the chemistry. Nintendo’s Joy-Con AA Battery Pack and HTC’s Vive Cosmos instructions allow alkaline or NiMH AA cells, while the US Luna instructions specify new 1.5-volt alkaline cells. Physical fit is not proof of compatibility.
Which controller battery lasts longer?
There is no universal answer in the cited manufacturer material. Runtime depends on cell capacity, power draw, vibration, accessories, wireless conditions, temperature and cell condition. Compare like-for-like sessions on the same model instead of assuming one chemistry always wins.

Can I charge NiMH AA cells inside the controller?
Only when the manufacturer explicitly provides an in-controller charging method for those cells. Otherwise, remove them and use a charger designed for NiMH. A controller’s USB cable is not automatically a NiMH charger.
Should I mix old and new AA batteries?
No. Use a matched set of the same approved chemistry and rating. The US Luna safety instructions specifically warn against mixing old and new batteries.
How should I store a controller that uses AA batteries?
Remove exhausted cells promptly and remove cells before extended non-use when the manual advises it. HTC’s Vive Cosmos guidance and the US Luna instructions include removal before long-term storage. Keep loose cells from contacting metal objects.
