Lithium-ion vs. Lead-acid Batteries for AI Data Center UPS Systems

Neither chemistry is the universal winner for an AI data-center UPS. Choose lithium-ion or lead-acid only after matching a complete, approved battery system to the required ride-through time, discharge rate, UPS architecture, temperature, growth plan, redundancy, service access, safety controls and lifecycle budget. Lithium-ion often delivers more usable power and energy in less floor space and can reduce replacement work; lead-acid remains a proven, widely deployable standby technology that can make sense when its footprint, service plan and replacement economics fit the facility.

The comparison below applies to batteries integrated with a UPS or rack battery-backup unit (BBU). A facility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) is a different engineered system with different controls, interconnection and code questions.

Start with the UPS duty, not the cell chemistry

AI loads can change rapidly as accelerators, networking and cooling equipment are added. The battery must support the actual transition or shutdown duty, not an abstract amp-hour rating. Define the load profile and required autonomy first, then request equivalent proposals for each chemistry.

Required duration and discharge rate

Record the protected load in kilowatts, power factor, expected growth, generator-start and transfer time, and the maximum time needed for an orderly shutdown if generation fails. A battery that supplies a short, high-power pulse can be a poor match for one sized for a long, lower-rate discharge. Compare usable energy and terminal voltage at the UPS’s specified discharge rate and end-of-discharge voltage, including the manufacturer’s temperature corrections.

Do not rank cycle-life figures taken at different depth of discharge (DoD), temperatures, current rates or end-of-life definitions. Huawei’s data-center paper illustrates why: its example curves show approximately 3,000 cycles for lithium-ion at 100% DoD and 6,000 at 50% DoD, versus approximately 150 and 600 cycles for lead-acid at the same two DoD points. Those are Huawei test results under the paper’s stated conditions, not universal specifications for every cell, battery module or UPS. Read the conditions and end-of-life definition in the Huawei paper before using the numbers in a model.

UPS topology and battery location

Identify whether the project uses a centralized double-conversion UPS, distributed UPS units, or 48 V DC rack BBUs. A central battery room, an integrated UPS cabinet and a rack BBU have different cable lengths, ventilation, monitoring and maintenance constraints. Compare like architectures: a lithium-ion rack BBU is not a one-for-one substitute for a lead-acid string on a centralized UPS DC bus.

Load growth and redundancy

Model the initial and forecast AI load, including additional accelerator racks, memory, networking and cooling auxiliaries. Check how N, N+1 or 2N redundancy changes the number and sizing of battery strings. Confirm that a replacement module can be isolated without removing required redundancy and that the UPS charger and DC protection are compatible with the proposed battery’s voltage window and charging limits.

Ambient temperature and service access

Temperature affects capacity, aging and available life for both chemistries. Map the highest and lowest temperatures at the battery location, not merely the room set point, and include hot spots near power electronics. Specify service aisles, lifting paths, spill or containment provisions where applicable, access for module replacement, and the route for removing end-of-life batteries. IEEE 1184-2022 covers selection, installation design, installation, maintenance and testing of stationary standby batteries for UPS systems; obtain the current edition and apply the manufacturer’s limits to the actual installation. IEEE 1184-2022 UPS battery guide

How the two choices compare

Decision axis Lithium-ion Lead-acid What to require in a proposal
Footprint and density Often higher power and energy density in vendor comparisons; the result depends on the product and enclosure. Generally requires more installation space for comparable duty, depending on battery design. A scaled layout showing usable kW/kWh, clearances, cable runs, ventilation and service space.
Service life and replacement May extend replacement intervals; chemistry, temperature, DoD and controls determine the result. Established technology, but life varies with battery type and operating conditions. Separate design life from expected service life and show replacement dates, labor and disposal assumptions.
Initial and lifecycle cost Often higher purchase price; lower space, maintenance or replacement costs may offset it. May have lower initial cost, while space, testing and more frequent replacement can add cost. A site-specific discounted cash-flow model rather than a generic payback claim.
Maintenance and monitoring Battery-management and string-monitoring systems are common in vendor-described systems. Monitoring and maintenance requirements depend on the battery type, string design and OEM procedure. An alarm list, telemetry points, inspection and test tasks, response times and included service.
Performance Compare usable capacity, high-rate power, recharge behavior and autonomy at the UPS limits. Use the same metrics; do not rely on nominal amp-hours alone. Manufacturer discharge tables at the specified rate, temperature and end voltage.
Safety and approvals Cell chemistry, battery-management system (BMS), thermal controls, enclosure, testing and codes all matter. Has different electrical, thermal, gas, spill or handling hazards; it is not risk-free. System-level hazard analysis, protection settings, certification scope and authority-having-jurisdiction (AHJ) acceptance.
Architecture Can be supplied for rack BBUs or centralized UPS systems, depending on the product. Common in centralized standby UPS installations and other configurations. Compare products approved for the same UPS model, bus voltage and redundancy arrangement.

The density, life, maintenance and cost distinctions above are comparison dimensions identified by IEEE and vendor technical papers, not guarantees for a particular installation. Size for usable energy and power

UPS sizing should use the battery manufacturer’s discharge data and the UPS manufacturer’s DC requirements. A simplified energy check is useful for screening, but it does not replace a string calculation:

required usable energy (kWh) = load (kW) × autonomy (hours) ÷ total efficiency

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The final design must also account for inverter efficiency at the load, battery aging allowance, temperature derating, cable and connection losses, parallel-string sharing, maximum fault current and the UPS low-voltage cutoff. Ask for both the beginning-of-life and end-of-life voltage and capacity at the required discharge rate.

A practical sizing sequence

  1. Capture the duty: list real and projected kW, power factor, inrush or step loads, required ride-through time, shutdown time and generator-transfer assumptions.
  2. Choose the architecture: document central UPS, distributed UPS or rack BBU, battery location, DC voltage, number of strings and redundancy target.
  3. Request discharge curves: obtain tables for the actual UPS cutoff voltage, rate, temperature, DoD and end-of-life capacity for each proposed battery.
  4. Check recharge: verify charger current, recharge time after an outage, generator capacity during recharge and any lithium BMS charging restrictions.
  5. Apply growth and aging: size for forecast load and the agreed end-of-life condition, not only the day-one load and fresh battery.
  6. Validate protection: coordinate fuses, breakers, disconnects, battery-management alarms and UPS settings with the manufacturer’s short-circuit and fault-current data.
  7. Review the physical design: confirm floor loading, clearances, cooling, ventilation, cable routes, lifting and replacement access.

Service life, maintenance and lifecycle cost

Design life is not service life

A label such as “10-year” or “15-year” design life is a rating under specified conditions, not a promise that a battery will deliver its original autonomy for that period in an AI facility. Calendar aging, temperature, float voltage, partial-state-of-charge operation, discharge depth, recharge practice and manufacturing quality all affect the result. Require the vendor to state the expected end-of-life capacity, assumptions and replacement trigger.

What vendor claims do—and do not—show

Vertiv states that lithium-ion UPS batteries can last two to three times longer than lead-acid batteries and that savings over a UPS service life can reach 40% or more. These are Vertiv’s claims for its described products and assumptions; the cited material does not establish a chemistry-wide result. Use them as questions for a site-specific quote, not as a guaranteed payback. Vertiv’s stated assumptions and comparison

Maintenance and monitoring questions

For lithium-ion, identify the BMS architecture, cell and module balancing, state-of-charge and state-of-health algorithms, alarm priorities, communications protocol, isolation behavior and firmware-update process. For lead-acid, identify string monitoring, impedance or conductance testing, torque and connection checks, thermal inspection, float-voltage limits and any ventilation or containment requirements. In both cases, ask who responds to an alarm, what spares are held on site and how a failed module is replaced while redundancy is preserved.

IEEE 1184 supports a planned maintenance and test program, but it does not prescribe one universal interval for every site. Follow the current standard, the UPS and battery OEM manuals, local rules and the facility’s criticality-based maintenance plan.

Safety, certification and code scope

Safety approval applies to the equipment and system that was evaluated, not to a chemistry name in isolation. UL distinguishes mature UPS products from evolving energy-storage-system installations, even where technologies overlap. UL’s overview discusses UL 1778 testing and certification for UPS equipment; its ESS certification material identifies UL 1973 for stationary batteries and UL 9540 for energy-storage systems and equipment. Confirm current editions, listing scope, installation instructions, jurisdiction and AHJ interpretation for the complete assembly.

Questions for the safety review

  • Does the listing cover the battery, enclosure, BMS, charger interface and complete UPS configuration, or only a component?
  • What detection, shutdown, isolation, ventilation, separation and emergency-response measures are required?
  • Are installation clearances, room construction, fire protection and signage acceptable to the local AHJ?
  • What abnormal-temperature, overcharge, short-circuit and propagation tests were performed, and do they match the proposed enclosure and installation?
  • For lead-acid, what controls address electrical shock, stored energy, electrolyte or gas hazards and battery handling?

Do not install a lithium-ion system solely because its cells have a particular chemistry, and do not apply BESS fire rules automatically to every UPS. A component certificate is not necessarily approval of the assembled UPS installation.

UPS batteries are not the same as a facility BESS

A UPS battery is normally optimized for immediate ride-through, power quality and controlled shutdown or generator transfer. A BESS may also provide peak shaving, renewable integration, demand management, microgrid operation or grid services. Those uses introduce different charge-discharge schedules, interconnection equipment, controls, protection, metering, fire strategy and permitting.

Evaluate a BESS as a separate architecture: define duration and dispatch profile, point of interconnection, islanding and resynchronization behavior, communications, revenue or utility obligations, degradation under cycling, and the boundary between BESS and UPS controls. Schneider Electric’s data-center paper addresses facility-scale BESS planning; it should not be read as a specification for a rack BBU or a central UPS battery. Schneider Electric data-center BESS paper

What a hyperscale rack-BBU example demonstrates

Google Cloud reports that it began adopting lithium-ion rack BBUs in its 48 V DC rack power system in 2015 and shared the rack power-system specification with the Open Compute Project in 2016. In its account, the transition to lithium-ion means it deploys only one-quarter as many batteries and reduces battery waste; the same article names a milestone of 100 million lithium-ion cells. Google also says the deployment uses rigorous testing, including UL 9540A methods.

Those figures are Google’s reported results for a specific 48 V rack-BBU design, not an independently audited industry ratio or proof that a centralized UPS will achieve the same economics. Google Cloud’s rack-BBU account

A procurement and design decision workflow

1. Write the duty statement

State protected kW, power factor, autonomy, transfer and shutdown assumptions, end-of-life capacity, temperature range, growth horizon and redundancy. Include whether the battery is float standby, frequently cycled or connected to a separate BESS operating schedule.

2. Demand like-for-like vendor data

For every offer, collect usable kWh and maximum kW at the same discharge rate, temperature, cutoff voltage, DoD and end-of-life definition. Obtain dimensions, weight, floor loading, clearances, charger limits, recharge time, monitoring points, warranty exclusions and replacement procedure.

3. Model the whole service life

Use discounted cash flow with installation, electrical work, cooling, space, service contracts, testing, spares, replacement labor, disposal and outage consequences. Run sensitivity cases for hotter operation, faster load growth, delayed generator start and shorter-than-expected life.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Complete the system safety review

Map listings and test reports to the exact UPS, battery cabinet, BMS, room and controls. Obtain AHJ review before procurement and document emergency procedures, isolation points and responder information.

5. Plan operations before commissioning

Define alarm ownership, 24-hour escalation, inspection and testing tasks, trend review, firmware governance, spare modules, controlled replacement and record retention. Commission the battery at the installed UPS settings and capture baseline voltage, temperature, state of charge and autonomy results.

Which chemistry fits which situation?

Lithium-ion is often compelling when

  • Floor area, weight or expansion space is constrained.
  • Longer replacement intervals and automated monitoring have high operational value.
  • The product has a documented BMS, thermal controls, approved enclosure and a listing that covers the intended UPS installation.
  • The facility can support the required controls, service expertise and emergency-response plan.

Lead-acid may remain the better fit when

  • An existing centralized UPS, room and maintenance program are already engineered around lead-acid strings.
  • Capital budget, local service capability or procurement standards favor the established technology.
  • The required autonomy, temperature and replacement schedule produce acceptable lifecycle economics after space and labor are priced.
  • The selected battery has discharge data, monitoring and approvals that match the UPS and AHJ requirements.

The defensible decision is the one supported by the actual load model, discharge curves, physical layout, safety review and lifecycle cash flow. Chemistry should be the result of that engineering process, not its starting assumption.
