Liquid Metal After Two Years: Excellent Thermal Conductivity, but Reactions With Copper and Aluminum Hurt Longevity

Gallium-based liquid-metal thermal interface material (TIM) does not simply evaporate or “dry out.” A two-year microscope sequence reported by Tom’s Hardware shows it reacting with the contacted metal and becoming a solid intermetallic layer. Bare copper is progressively converted to lower-conductivity CuGa2, nickel plating limits the reaction to a much thinner crust, and exposed aluminum can be rapidly embrittled. Liquid metal can deliver outstanding initial temperatures, but it demands compatible surfaces, careful application and periodic inspection.

What the two-year microscope test actually found

Tom’s Hardware reported on 16 October 2026 on electron-microscope observations by Roman “der8auer” Hartung. The work was presented by a Thermal Grizzly executive, so it is a commercially associated demonstration rather than an independent laboratory comparison. Samples were stored under vacuum or in a nitrogen-filled box between observations to reduce oxidation.

Elapsed time Observed condition
One hour The sample was still visibly liquid.
Two months No free liquid remained; crystals covered the interface.
Two years The appearance had not changed further.

Hartung summarized the endpoint: “After a total of two years, this honestly did not change further.” The most accurate description is reacted and solidified, not dried. Gallium remains in the interface, but much of it is locked into compounds with the cooler surface.

What happens on copper and nickel-plated copper

Bare copper becomes CuGa2

On bare copper, gallium forms CuGa2, while indium and tin occupy other solid regions. The reacted layer grows at roughly 1 micrometre per day until it reaches about 50–100 micrometres, depending on temperature and the amount of gallium available. That rate is an observation from this class of test, not a universal value for every alloy, finish or operating condition.

Surface Reaction product Reported material data Practical consequence
Bare copper CuGa2 About 100 W/mK conductivity; copper is roughly 400 W/mK. CuGa2 remains solid to about 254°C. The interface conducts heat through a material with about one-quarter of copper’s reported conductivity. It cannot simply be remelted during normal CPU or GPU operation.
Nickel-plated copper NiGa5 Approximately 1–5 µm in the reported measurement; one presentation slide showed 5–10 µm. The much thinner layer consumes less gallium and shields the copper underneath, making nickel plating the more practical contact surface.

Nickel plating is not chemically inert: NiGa5 still conducts less well than copper. Its advantage is limiting how much metal is consumed and preventing the deep copper reaction seen on an exposed copper cold plate.

Why aluminum is unsafe

Gallium can penetrate aluminum’s oxide film and travel along grain boundaries. In the reported demonstration, a 2 mm aluminum sheet swelled after about five minutes and became brittle in less than 30 minutes. Indium Corporation likewise warns that gallium-based materials should not contact most metals, including aluminum.

Thermal Grizzly Liquid Metal Thermal Paste Conductonaut 1 Gram
  • Thermal Conductivity: Grizzly thermal paste has extremely high conductivity, perfect for even the most demanding configurations.
  • Long Action: Conductonaut PS5 liquid metal has high thermal conductivity and is stable even with extended use. However, it CANNOT be used on aluminum components due to the risk of corrosion.
  • Exceptional Results: Using this thermal compound will immediately lower temperatures, reduce equipment noise, and improve user comfort.
  • Value for Money: Conductonaut is the best thermal paste for experienced users who want to enhance their system's thermals, as it provides up to 10 times more thermal conductivity than other thermal greases.

Do not apply gallium-based liquid metal to an exposed aluminum heatsink, vapor chamber, cold plate or mounting component. A thin coating elsewhere in an assembly should not be assumed to protect aluminum if the coating is scratched, porous or breached during installation.

Does the reaction ruin thermal performance?

Liquid metal can still provide excellent initial interface performance because it wets microscopic surface irregularities and has very low interfacial resistance. The long-term concern is not evaporation; it is the replacement of a high-conductivity contact surface with a solid reaction layer and the possibility of uneven coverage, residue or mechanical damage during later servicing.

Liquid Metal Thermal Paste, 79 W/mK High Performance, Heatsink Paste for CPU Coolers, 1 Grams with Cleanser and Spreader
  • [High thermal conductivity]: thermal conductivity: 79 W/MK. It guarantees that heat generated from the CPU or GPU is dissipated efficiently.
  • [Top performance]: conductor is recommended for users who are looking for a top performance product with best heat dissipation.
  • [Warning]: Electrically conductive liquid metal is for experienced users, beginners can learn to use it on youtube or use non-electrical conductive thermal paste instead.
  • [Note]: This thermal grease must not be used with aluminum heatsinks!

The exact outcome depends on alloy composition, surface finish, temperature, contact pressure, oxygen exposure and the available supply of gallium. The microscope results should therefore guide compatibility decisions, not be treated as a guaranteed service-life curve for every system.

Application, electrical risk and cleanup

Application requires more control than ordinary paste

  • Confirm that every wetted surface is nickel-plated or otherwise explicitly approved for the alloy; exposed aluminum is unacceptable.
  • Use only a very small, even film. Liquid metal is electrically conductive, so a spill can short nearby components.
  • Mask or protect surrounding components before spreading the TIM, and keep the cooler level during installation.
  • Record the installation date and inspect the interface whenever the cooler is removed.

Residue may not dissolve in common solvents

In Tom’s Hardware’s demonstration, isopropyl alcohol and acetone did not remove the reacted film in less than five minutes. Thermal Grizzly’s TG Metal Polish & Restore uses a surfactant-based approach and was demonstrated on fresh residue; the result does not establish that every aged or heavily reacted surface will clean identically. Plan for mechanical inspection and careful cleaning rather than assuming a quick solvent wipe will restore bare metal.

Who should use liquid metal?

It fits a narrow enthusiast use case

Liquid metal is most defensible when a user is pursuing very high power density—such as a manually overclocked processor—and is willing to accept application risk and scheduled maintenance. Nickel-plated contact surfaces, easy cooler access and the ability to monitor temperatures are important prerequisites.

It is a poor choice for routine systems

For a workstation, laptop or gaming PC that must run unattended for years, the maintenance burden often outweighs the initial temperature advantage. Avoid it when the cooler exposes aluminum, when nearby components cannot be protected from conductive spills, or when disassembly for inspection is impractical.

Lower-maintenance alternatives and measured specifications

Alternatives trade some peak thermal performance for simpler installation or better control of chemical interaction.

Option Evidence and specification What the trade-off means
Graphene phase-change pad (KryoSheet) Tom’s Hardware reported a manufacturer-associated estimate of roughly 3–4°C higher temperatures than liquid metal. Less handling and no free-flowing conductive alloy, with a potential temperature penalty that was not independently benchmarked in that report.
Indium m2TIM Indium Corporation’s 2025 data sheet reports 20,000 power cycles from 0–80 W at a maximum junction temperature of 105°C. A solid indium preform contains the liquid alloy, reducing pump-out risk while retaining low interfacial resistance.
Indalloy 51E 37 W/mK at 85°C, according to Indium Corporation’s 2025 data. A category option for engineered assemblies where the stated test temperature and alloy properties match the design.
Indalloy 300E 44 W/mK at 85°C, according to Indium Corporation’s 2025 data. Higher reported bulk conductivity than 51E under the same stated measurement condition.
Indalloy 306 37 W/mK at 85°C, according to Indium Corporation’s 2025 data. Another engineered alloy option with the same reported conductivity as 51E at that test temperature.

These figures are not directly interchangeable with a CPU cooler’s measured thermal resistance. Interface thickness, clamping pressure, surface roughness and the rest of the thermal path determine the final temperature.

A separate four-year study shows another aging pathway

A peer-reviewed 2024 study of Galinstan on diamond-coated samples found solidification beginning in year two and complete solidification by year four. The authors attributed it to oxygen-driven oxidation, hydrolysis forming GaOOH, and dealloying that left GaOOH crystallites plus an indium-tin-rich alloy.

That study used a different alloy, coating and environmental pathway from the two-year copper and nickel observations. It reinforces the broader point that long-term aging can involve oxidation and phase separation as well as direct reaction with the cooler metal; it is not a direct prediction of CPU-cooler service life.

Maintenance checklist for a liquid-metal installation

  1. Verify the cooler’s contact surface material and reject exposed aluminum.
  2. Prefer a sound nickel plating over bare copper when the design permits.
  3. Apply a controlled film while shielding nearby electronics from conductive droplets.
  4. Monitor temperatures after installation and treat a gradual change as a reason to inspect the interface.
  5. At service time, expect solid reaction residue; do not rely on isopropyl alcohol or acetone alone.
  6. Replace the TIM after cleaning rather than spreading new liquid metal over an uneven, contaminated layer.

Verdict

Liquid metal remains a high-performance specialist TIM, not a fit-and-forget paste. The two-year evidence shows that the material stays at the interface by chemically converting the surface: deep CuGa2 growth on bare copper, a much thinner NiGa5 layer on nickel, and potentially catastrophic grain-boundary attack on aluminum. Use it only when the thermal gain justifies compatibility checks, electrical-spill precautions and recurring inspection.
