Linux on PS5 Jailbreaks: July 2026 Firmware Support, Storage and the Reality of PC Games

Yes, Linux can run on a jailbroken PS5. The public ps5-linux project lists support for PS5 Phat and Slim consoles on firmware versions from 3.00 through 7.61, including the July 2026-era 7.60 and 7.61 releases. Firmware 8.00 and newer is currently outside that project’s supported range. This is a repeatable soft-mod boot, not a permanent dual-boot installation, and PC-game compatibility remains dependent on Linux drivers, Proton and each individual title.

Which PS5 firmware versions support Linux?

The ps5-linux project’s current README lists the following supported firmware versions. The list applies to both PS5 Phat and Slim hardware; the project does not present the console revisions as separate firmware-eligibility tiers.

Firmware group Versions listed as supported
3.xx–5.xx 3.00, 3.10, 3.20, 3.21, 4.00, 4.02, 4.03, 4.50, 4.51, 5.00, 5.02, 5.10, 5.50
6.xx–7.61 6.00, 6.02, 6.50, 7.00, 7.01, 7.20, 7.40, 7.60, 7.61
8.00 and newer Not supported by the project’s listed compatibility range

Because exploit availability is tied to specific vulnerabilities, updating a console can remove eligibility. The support list is therefore a firmware requirement, not a guarantee that every installation path will remain unchanged as Sony updates system software.

How the Linux jailbreak boot works

This method is a soft mod. Linux is loaded only after the console’s exploit and loader sequence has been run; there is no permanent boot menu that survives a normal reboot.

  1. Prepare the Linux image. The project requires a bootable image on a USB drive.
  2. Use the exploit matching the firmware. For firmware 3.00–5.50, the README documents a fake-DNS and user-manual route using umtx2. For 6.00–7.61, it documents Y2JB followed by a kernel-exploit payload.
  3. Send the ps5-linux loader payload. This hands control to the Linux environment after the exploit succeeds.
  4. Power-cycle into Linux. The FAQ states that the exploit must be run again after a reboot if you want to return to Linux.

These procedures are version-sensitive. An exploit page, DNS route or payload that works on one firmware should not be assumed to work on another, and Sony patches can change the practical procedure even when a version remains listed by the project.

What hardware is required?

Component Status What the project specifies
USB storage Required At least 64GB; an external SSD is recommended for better convenience and endurance
Keyboard and mouse Required USB models are supported, including devices using wireless dongles
Internal M.2 SSD Optional Can provide dedicated Linux storage if it is compatible with the PS5
USB WLAN adapter Optional Useful when the chosen Linux setup needs an external wireless interface
Bluetooth dongle Optional Available for setups that need Bluetooth connectivity

The README advertises HDMI output up to 4K at 60 frames per second, audio, USB peripherals, Ethernet and Bluetooth support. It describes the system as an eight-core, 16-thread CPU running at 3.5GHz with a 2.23GHz GPU. Those are the project’s platform specifications, not a promise that every Linux distribution or game will use every feature without driver configuration.

USB drive or M.2 SSD: which storage approach makes sense?

USB storage

A 64GB USB drive is the minimum listed requirement and is the simplest way to meet the boot requirement. An external SSD is the project’s preferred option, especially if you expect to install a desktop environment, updates, emulators or large games. USB storage is removable, so the console can retain its normal internal game-storage arrangement.

Dedicated M.2 storage

A compatible PS5 M.2 SSD can be assigned to Linux, giving the operating system faster, internal storage. The important limitation is exclusivity: the project says an M.2 used for Linux cannot simultaneously be used as PS5 game storage. Choosing this route means giving up that drive’s normal console-game role while Linux is installed on it.

Can a Linux-enabled PS5 play PC games?

The project README claims that the hardware is capable of running Steam games and emulators. In practice, each title depends on Linux graphics drivers, the game’s compatibility with Proton and its own anti-cheat or launcher requirements. “The PS5 runs PC games” is therefore too broad: Linux can provide a PC-like environment, but compatibility must be checked game by game.

Steam and Proton

Steam games that already work well with the relevant Linux driver stack and Proton version are the most plausible candidates. A title can still fail because of unsupported graphics features, launchers, anti-cheat, controller handling or performance limits. The ps5-linux project does not establish a universal compatibility list.

Prosper and PS5-binary experiments

Prosper is a separate experimental project aimed at running PS5 binaries on Linux, Windows and macOS. Its documentation says it reimplements the PS5 operating system, application binary interface and GPU stack; it is not a conventional CPU emulator and is “not a general-purpose game runner yet.” Its title results remain incomplete, so it should not be treated as a way to install an arbitrary PS5 library on Linux.

AnyPS5 progress

Tom’s Hardware reported on 10 October 2026 that AnyPS5’s tracker showed all 1,166 of 1,166 tracked AMD RDNA shader instructions recognized. That metric is an implementation milestone, not proof of complete GPU support. The same report listed 2,578 of 3,044 declared system-library functions implemented, or 84.69%, and only one verified playable title. Those figures describe project progress rather than broad PS5-game compatibility on a PC.

Mihawk OS/PP

A Windows Central report dated 10 October 2026 described Mihawk OS/PP, also called PS5 Proton, as an in-development layer for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows games on a jailbroken PS5. The report said broader performance and compatibility were still unknown. Demonstrations should therefore be understood as experimental bring-up, not as a supported Windows-console replacement.

Phat versus Slim, and the practical trade-offs

Question What is established
Firmware eligibility The public project lists the same 3.00–7.61 range for PS5 Phat and Slim consoles
Linux boot persistence Neither model receives a permanent dual boot; the exploit must be rerun after reboot
Basic peripherals USB keyboard and mouse are required; dongles are supported
Storage choice USB storage is removable; an M.2 offers internal Linux storage but cannot also store PS5 games
Game compatibility Depends on drivers, Proton and the title; no model-wide compatibility guarantee is stated

Legal and online-service risks

Sony’s PS5 software licence prohibits unauthorised or modified hardware and software, bypassing PS5 encryption, security or authentication, and downgrading system software. Using a jailbreak can therefore conflict with the licence and may affect access to online services. Before modifying a console, read the current licence for your region and understand that service eligibility is not assured.

The practical answer

If your PS5 is on one of the listed versions through 7.61, a Linux installation is publicly documented for both Phat and Slim systems. Plan on a 64GB-or-larger USB drive, an external SSD if possible, and a USB keyboard and mouse. Add an M.2 only if you accept that it becomes Linux-only storage. Linux can make the console useful as an experimental PC and may run selected Steam games or emulators, but PS5-binary and Windows-game projects are still incomplete, title-specific and unsupported as general-purpose solutions. Consoles on firmware 8.00 or newer are outside the project’s stated range, and every user must weigh the soft-mod workflow against Sony’s licence and possible online-service consequences.
