Zorin OS offers the most explicit Windows-style path: its paid Pro edition includes Windows 11 and Windows Classic desktop layouts. Linux Mint Cinnamon is the project’s most popular edition, is free, and provides a traditional desktop without requiring a paid upgrade. The practical choice depends on the desktop you prefer after trying it, whether your essential applications and peripherals work, and whether Zorin Pro’s extra layouts justify its one-time cost.
Do not judge either system only from screenshots. Back up your files, boot a live session, test your applications and hardware, and keep Windows available during a pilot or dual-boot period if you need a fallback.

Linux Mint 22.3 “Zena”
Linux Mint 22.3 “Zena” was announced on January 13, 2026. The Linux Mint team describes it as a long-term-support release with security updates through 2029. It uses the Ubuntu Noble package base and Linux kernel 6.14.
Mint offers three main desktop editions. Cinnamon is identified on Mint’s download page as the most popular edition. Xfce is presented as lighter on resource use, while MATE continues the classic GNOME 2-style desktop. Those descriptions establish the editions’ design goals, not a measured ranking of ease for Windows users.

Mint is completely free to download and use. There is no paid tier that unlocks a different set of desktop layouts. That makes the normal comparison straightforward: start with Cinnamon, then try Xfce or MATE if your hardware or preferred workflow points in that direction.
Zorin OS 18.1
Zorin OS 18.1 is based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and is supported through June 1, 2029. Core and Pro use GNOME Shell; Lite uses XFCE. Zorin supports APT, Flatpak, Snap, .deb, AppImage and web applications. Optional Windows App Support can add compatibility for some .exe and .msi files.
Zorin’s technical documentation lists 64-bit Intel and AMD processor support. The available documentation does not provide a complete, directly comparable current minimum-requirements table for Zorin, so do not treat Mint’s published numbers as Zorin’s thresholds.
The editions matter. Core is free and includes four basic desktop layouts. Pro is a paid, one-time edition that adds eight layouts, including Windows 11 and Windows Classic. Lite uses XFCE and is intended for users investigating a lighter desktop. A paid license is not required to install Zorin or run ordinary Linux software.
Which desktop is more familiar to a Windows user?
Zorin’s documented Windows layouts
Zorin Core includes four basic desktop layouts. Zorin Pro adds eight more, including layouts explicitly named Windows 11 and Windows Classic. These layouts can put familiar elements such as an application menu, taskbar and system tray in positions a Windows user already understands.
A familiar arrangement can reduce the time spent searching for the launcher, open windows and settings. It does not guarantee that every control behaves like Windows, and Zorin does not publish an independent usability score proving that Pro is easier for every newcomer.
Layout familiarity also does not eliminate Linux-specific differences. Software is installed through Linux package formats or software stores, permissions and system updates work differently, and some Windows utilities have no equivalent. Treat the layout as an on-ramp, not as a promise that the operating system is Windows underneath.
Mint Cinnamon’s traditional approach
Cinnamon presents a conventional desktop with a menu, panel and window-based workflow. Mint’s official material establishes its popularity, but it does not claim that Cinnamon is more or less familiar than Zorin in a head-to-head test. Mint also does not require a paid edition to obtain its main desktop.
Windows users who prefer a straightforward, conventional desktop may feel at home in Cinnamon, while users who specifically want a Windows 11-like arrangement may value Zorin Pro’s named layouts. The only reliable way to resolve that preference is to use both desktops for ordinary tasks.

- LINUX MINT 22.3 MEDIA - 16GB bootable USB with Linux Mint Cinnamon 22.3 for compatible x86-64 PCs.
- LIVE OR INSTALL - On supported hardware, start the Linux Mint live environment to evaluate it or launch the installer.
- PLATFORM BOUNDARY - Not designed to boot Apple Silicon or other ARM-based computers. Confirm CPU architecture and USB-boot support before purchase.
- BOOT SETTINGS VARY - Boot-menu keys and UEFI settings differ by manufacturer; consult the computer maker's instructions if the USB is not listed.
- BACK UP BEFORE INSTALLING - Disk-partition and installation choices can erase files or operating systems. Disconnect nonessential drives and preserve the USB until it is no longer needed for installation or recovery.
Try the same sequence in each system: open the browser, locate a downloaded file, change a display setting, connect a headset, install an application and shut down. Small frictions, such as where a setting is located or how windows are switched, are more meaningful than a general statement that one desktop “looks familiar.”
A practical familiarity test
- Open the application menu and find a settings panel.
- Connect to Wi-Fi, adjust audio and change display scaling.
- Open several windows, minimize them, switch between them and pin an application.
- Insert a USB drive and locate it in the file manager.
- Perform one task you do every day, such as editing a document or joining a video meeting.
- Install a browser extension or desktop application and find its update controls.
- Log out, restart, and locate the same files and settings again without a guide.
Record how often you need to search for a control. That observation is more useful than assuming that a layout name alone predicts your experience.

Edition and cost differences
| Option | What the official material establishes | What it means for a Windows switch |
|---|---|---|
| Linux Mint Cinnamon | Mint’s most popular edition; the distribution is free | Traditional desktop without buying a layout |
| Linux Mint Xfce | Described by Mint as lighter on resource use | Worth testing on older or modest hardware |
| Linux Mint MATE | Classic desktop continuation of GNOME 2 | An alternative traditional workflow |
| Zorin OS Core | Free edition with four basic layouts; GNOME Shell | Lets you evaluate Zorin without paying for Pro layouts |
| Zorin OS Pro | Paid one-time edition with eight additional layouts, including Windows 11 and Windows Classic; GNOME Shell | Provides the clearest documented Windows-style choices; current price is not stated here |
| Zorin OS Lite | Uses XFCE | A lower-overhead Zorin desktop to test on suitable older hardware |
Zorin’s current edition page describes Pro as a one-time purchase, but a price can change by region or over time and is not quoted here. Do not assume that paying for Pro is necessary to run Zorin or that it automatically makes every task easier. You can install Core first, compare it with Mint, and decide whether the additional layouts solve a real problem.
Also separate operating-system cost from switching cost. A free download may still require a USB drive, replacement software, training time, storage, or a Windows license kept for one specialist task. Those costs are specific to your situation rather than a universal price difference between the projects.
Application compatibility: the decision point that matters most
Check for a native Linux version first
Before choosing an operating system, list the programs you cannot replace. Look for an official Linux release, a Flatpak, a .deb package, an AppImage or a web version. Zorin’s migration guidance recommends this order because a native application generally avoids the uncertainty of a compatibility layer.
Make a test list that includes your office files, browser extensions, password manager, accounting tools, creative software, games, VPN client and any specialist business application. Test the exact files and workflows you use, not merely whether an application opens. Check sign-in, licensing, plug-ins, hardware acceleration, printing, export formats and update behavior.
For team or household computers, record who uses each application and which features are essential. A program that is optional for one person may be a hard requirement for another. Mark each item as native, web-based, replaceable, test-required or Windows-dependent before selecting a distribution.
What Windows App Support can and cannot do
Zorin’s Windows App Support uses Wine to launch many Windows .exe and .msi files. Zorin explicitly cautions that not all Windows applications are fully compatible. A program may install but fail at sign-in, printing, hardware acceleration, plug-ins, file conversion or updates.
Treat Wine as an experiment rather than a promise. If an essential program has no native Linux or web version, test it in the live or installed pilot before changing your main system. Keep the Windows installation available until the complete workflow succeeds. Do not assume that a successful installer means future updates or every feature will work.

Files and services
Common formats such as documents, spreadsheets, images and PDFs can often be handled by Linux applications or web services, but compatibility depends on the application that created the file. Open representative files during your trial and check fonts, macros, templates, comments, export settings and cloud synchronization.
Recommended Free Tools
Pay attention to file locations and permissions. Copy a small, verified sample rather than your entire archive, edit it, export it, and reopen the result on Windows or in the service your colleagues use. This catches formatting and sharing problems before they affect production files.
Hardware and peripheral testing
Compatibility varies by device, firmware and application. Zorin’s migration guide specifically recommends testing peripherals such as printers and scanners and piloting real workflows. There is no evidence here that Mint or Zorin is a universal hardware winner.
- Connect each printer and confirm that the correct paper sizes, duplex settings and scanning functions appear.
- Test webcams, microphones, Bluetooth headsets and external displays in the applications you actually use.
- Check Wi-Fi after suspend and resume, not only immediately after booting.
- Verify graphics performance, docking stations, fingerprint readers and specialty USB devices.
- Confirm that removable drives mount and that your backup software can read and restore data.
- Test hotkeys, brightness controls, sleep, camera privacy switches and battery reporting on a laptop.
If a device fails, identify whether the problem is the kernel, a missing driver, an application setting or the device itself before concluding that an entire distribution is unsuitable. Check the manufacturer’s Linux support and the device’s exact model number; two products with similar names can use different internal hardware.

Mint’s figures are useful for checking an older computer, but they are not a side-by-side performance benchmark. A computer that meets a minimum may still feel slow with modern browsers, video calls or large documents. Use the live sessions to assess responsiveness on your hardware.
Leave headroom for updates, swap space, applications and personal files. A 20 GB installation minimum is not a sensible target for a working computer with a large browser profile or office suite. The 100 GB recommendation from the Linux Mint team gives more practical room, but your own workload may require more.
How to test either system without committing
Prepare the installation media
- Back up personal files to storage you can access independently of the computer you are changing. Confirm that important files open from the backup.
- Download the intended edition from its official project page and read the release notes. Mint publishes an installation guide; follow its current instructions for the specific release.
- Create a bootable USB drive. Zorin’s installer guide lists 4 GB for Core and Lite, and 16 GB for Pro, Pro Lite and Education. Use a larger drive if the image or tool requires it.
- Restart the computer and choose the USB device from the firmware boot menu. The key varies by manufacturer.
- Disconnect unnecessary external drives during installation so you are less likely to select the wrong disk.
The USB capacity figures are installation-media guidance, not the amount of storage the installed operating system will consume. A suitable existing drive is enough; buy a flash drive only if you do not already have one that meets the edition’s requirement.
Use the live session
Zorin offers a Try Zorin OS option before installation. A live Mint session can likewise be used to inspect the desktop and hardware before changing the disk. Live sessions are slower than an installed system and may not preserve settings, but they are appropriate for checking menus, displays, networking, audio, printers and basic application behavior.
Some tests require installation because a live session may lack persistent drivers, updates or the ability to install large applications. Treat a successful live boot as an initial compatibility signal, not a final approval.

Test your actual workload
- Connect every essential peripheral.
- Install or open the applications you depend on, where the live environment permits it.
- Open representative files and complete a real task from start to finish.
- Record failures, error messages and missing features instead of relying on memory.
- Repeat the test after installing to a spare drive or virtual machine if the live session cannot exercise an important workflow.
- Test updates, restart, sleep and resume, external displays and network reconnection before judging reliability.
Choose dual boot or a separate test device
Zorin documents dual booting alongside the existing operating system. This keeps Windows available while you learn, but partitioning introduces risk. Back up first, keep recovery media available and avoid resizing a partition until you understand which disk and volume contain your data.
A spare computer or replacement drive is easier to reverse than modifying a production installation. If you dual boot, allow enough space for updates and applications and make sure you know how to select the desired system at startup. Encryption, firmware settings and recovery partitions can affect the process, so follow the current installer instructions rather than guessing.
A staged migration plan
Stage 1: inventory
Write down users, files, applications, peripherals, browser data, shared folders, printers, VPN settings and any task that depends on Windows. Mark each item as native Linux, web-based, replaceable, test-required or Windows-dependent.
Stage 2: pilot
Install the preferred system on one non-critical computer or a separate drive. Zorin’s migration guidance recommends piloting workflows and introducing alternative applications before a full switch. Give the pilot enough time to cover updates, sleep and resume, printing, meetings and file exchange.

An application installs but does not work correctly
- Look for a native Linux release or web version.
- Check whether the developer supports the required Linux format.
- Test the exact feature that failed, such as macros, plug-ins or printing.
- Keep the Windows version for that task if no dependable alternative passes the pilot.
The printer or scanner is detected but unusable
- Reconnect it directly rather than through a dock or hub.
- Check the device’s Linux driver and the application’s selected printer or scanner.
- Test a basic page and a scan before relying on advanced features.
- Retest after updates; behavior can differ between a live session and an installed system.
The computer feels slow
- Compare the live session with an installed test, because USB boot speed can be misleading.
- Try Mint Xfce or Zorin Lite on hardware that struggles with heavier desktop effects.
- Reduce simultaneous browser tabs and background services.
- Check storage health and available disk space before blaming the desktop.
You need Windows unexpectedly
Use the dual-boot entry or restore the backed-up Windows installation, depending on your setup. This is why a verified backup and a staged pilot should precede disk changes.
You cannot find a familiar setting
Use each desktop’s search function and official help before changing system files. Note the path you used, because documenting a few common settings makes later support easier for other household members or coworkers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to make the choice
- Choose Zorin Pro when the Windows 11 or Windows Classic layout is the deciding convenience and a paid one-time edition is acceptable.
- Choose Zorin Core when you want to evaluate Zorin’s GNOME-based desktop and four basic layouts without buying Pro first.
- Choose Mint Cinnamon when you want the most popular Mint edition and a free, traditional desktop, provided it passes your application and hardware tests.
- Try Mint Xfce or MATE when the desktop style or hardware age makes those alternatives more appropriate to investigate.
- Postpone the switch when an essential Windows-only application, peripheral or workflow has not passed testing.
Official documentation supports conditional recommendations, not a universal ease-of-use verdict. No independent comparative usability study or named statistic establishes that one distribution is easier for all Windows users. Your tested workload, hardware and preferred desktop arrangement should decide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I try Zorin OS before installing it?
Yes. Zorin provides a “Try Zorin OS” live-session option. Boot from installation media, test the desktop and connect important hardware before changing the disk. A live session is slower and may not exercise every installed application, so confirm critical workflows on a spare drive or pilot installation.
Will my Windows applications work on Linux?
Some have native Linux or web versions. Zorin’s Windows App Support uses Wine to launch many .exe and .msi files, but Zorin warns that not all Windows applications are fully compatible. Test sign-in, plug-ins, printing, file conversion, updates and other features you actually need.
Can I keep Windows while testing Zorin?
Zorin documents dual booting alongside an existing Windows installation. Back up personal files, keep recovery media available and understand the disk layout before resizing partitions. A spare computer or replacement drive is easier to reverse.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is Zorin Pro required to get a Windows-like desktop?
No. Zorin Core is free and includes four basic layouts. Pro is the paid, one-time edition that adds eight layouts, including Windows 11 and Windows Classic. Whether those extra choices justify the cost depends on how much the named layouts help you.
Which Linux Mint edition should a Windows user start with?
Mint identifies Cinnamon as its most popular edition and it offers a traditional desktop. Xfce is described as lighter on resource use, while MATE continues a classic GNOME 2-style desktop. Try the edition that fits your hardware and preferences rather than assuming one is universally easier.
What are Linux Mint 22.3’s hardware requirements?
The Linux Mint team lists 2 GB RAM and 20 GB disk space as minimums, with 4 GB RAM and 100 GB disk space recommended, plus 1024×768 resolution. These figures are from the 2026 release announcement and are not a performance guarantee.
What USB drive size is needed for Zorin installation media?
Zorin’s installer guide lists 4 GB for Core and Lite, and 16 GB for Pro, Pro Lite and Education. These are media-capacity requirements, not the storage needed for the installed system. Use suitable existing media if you already have it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Should I buy a backup or cleanup utility before switching?
A verified backup is important because installation and partition changes carry risk, but no particular provider or utility is required by the documented migration steps. Confirm that your backup can be opened and restored before making changes.
The Bottom Line
For the clearest documented Windows-style interface, try Zorin Pro. For a popular, free and traditional desktop, start with Linux Mint Cinnamon. Zorin Core, Mint Xfce and Mint MATE are sensible alternatives to test. In every case, let your own applications, peripherals, hardware and daily workflow decide; keep Windows available until the pilot succeeds.
