On Linux Mint Cinnamon, press Print for a screenshot of the screen, Shift + Print to draw and capture a rectangular area, and Alt + Print to capture the active window. The reported Cinnamon defaults also have Ctrl-modified variants for copying a capture to the clipboard. Because shortcuts can differ by Mint edition, desktop environment, keyboard and personal customization, confirm them in Keyboard Shortcuts before relying on them.
Linux Mint screenshot shortcuts at a glance
The Print key may be labelled PrtSc, PrtScn or something similar. On a standard Cinnamon installation, these are the community-reported actions:

These are reported Cinnamon defaults, not a guarantee for every Linux Mint release or session. A customized shortcut, a different desktop (MATE or Xfce), a laptop Fn layer, or another screenshot program can change the result.
How to draw an area screenshot
- Show the content you want to capture and close anything that should not appear.
- Press Shift + Print. If your keyboard has a separate Fn layer, try the keyboard combination that produces the Print function.
- Move the pointer to one corner of the required region.
- Press and hold the primary mouse button, drag to the opposite corner, and release. This is the “snipping” action: the rectangle you draw becomes the image.
- Use the resulting capture according to the assignment shown in your shortcut settings—normally saving it or copying it when you use the Ctrl-modified action.
If nothing happens, do not assume the feature is absent. Open the desktop’s keyboard-shortcut settings and search for screenshot, screen, window or area actions. Another application may already own the Print key.

Capture the whole desktop or one window
Whole desktop
Press Print when you need everything visible on the desktop. Check for private notifications, passwords, browser tabs and other monitors before capturing. If your system uses more than one display, verify whether the assigned action captures the complete desktop or only the display managed by your current utility; the exact behavior is session- and configuration-dependent.
One window
Focus the window you want, then press Alt + Print. Focusing matters: click the title bar or content area first, and avoid leaving a menu or dialog active unless that is what you intend to document.
Copy rather than save
The Linux Mint forum guidance also reports Ctrl-modified screenshot combinations for the clipboard. This is useful when you want to paste directly into an email, issue tracker or image editor. Since the precise assignment can be changed, inspect the action shown under Keyboard Shortcuts instead of assuming a particular Ctrl combination on every installation.
Check or change the shortcut assignment
Open your desktop’s Keyboard Shortcuts settings and locate the screenshot or screen-capture category. Read the action name and the key shown beside it. From there you can:

- Confirm which key captures the entire screen, an area or a window.
- See whether a Ctrl-modified action copies to the clipboard.
- Assign a different key if Print is missing, intercepted or uncomfortable to use.
- Remove a conflicting assignment owned by another application.
The labels and exact path can vary between Mint versions and desktop environments, so treat the settings panel as the authoritative state for your machine rather than a forum shortcut list.
If you use Linux Mint MATE or Xfce
Do not assume Cinnamon’s assignments are identical on MATE or Xfce. Open that desktop’s keyboard-shortcut configuration and confirm the assigned screenshot action. Xfce also has a Screenshooter utility whose catalog description includes desktop, rectangular-area and selected-window capture. Use the utility supplied or enabled in your session and verify its save and clipboard behavior.
For a machine running a customized panel, window manager or Wayland/X11 combination, the same principle applies: identify the active screenshot utility, then inspect its shortcut and output settings. This avoids troubleshooting the wrong program.
When you need arrows, text or other annotations
The built-in shortcut is aimed at taking the capture. If you need to mark it up before sharing, Ksnip is an optional application listed in the Linux Mint Community catalog. Availability and compatibility depend on your Mint release and graphical session. Check the catalog or your package source for the version available to you before treating Ksnip as a guaranteed built-in component. Choose it when annotation is central; keep the built-in shortcut for quick, unedited captures.
Screenshot versus screen recording
A screenshot is a still image. Recording creates a video stream and therefore has different dependencies, performance demands and compatibility concerns.
The Cinnamon Spices “ScreenShot+Record Desktop” applet is an optional community component, not something to assume ships with every Mint installation. Its listing names ffmpeg, xdotool and x11-utils as recording dependencies. The same listing includes user reports of recording trouble on Mint 22.3, so check your release and session before depending on it for a presentation or support video.
If you only need one frame, use the screenshot shortcut. If you need motion, test a short recording first, confirm that the selected monitor and audio behave as expected, and keep a fallback capture method available.

Troubleshooting common failures
Pressing Print does nothing
- Open Keyboard Shortcuts and check whether a screenshot action is assigned.
- On a laptop, use the key combination that exposes the Print function, often involving Fn, and check whether the keyboard labels require it.
- Look for a conflict: another screenshot program or desktop extension may have claimed the key.
- Try the area and window actions separately. A working Shift + Print or Alt + Print assignment indicates that the utility exists even if the full-screen binding was changed.
The wrong window is captured
Activate the target window immediately before pressing Alt + Print. Menus, dialogs and transient tooltips can become the focused object, so dismiss them and try again.
The rectangle is not what you intended
Start the drag from a clear corner, keep the button held while moving, and release only at the opposite corner. If Shift + Print launches a different action, inspect the assigned shortcut rather than changing mouse settings.
The image is not in the clipboard
Use the Ctrl-modified action shown in your shortcut settings. A normal Print capture may follow a save workflow, while the clipboard action is a separate assignment.
Recording fails or stops
Check that the recorder’s dependencies are installed and that your display session is supported. For the Cinnamon Spices applet, the listed dependencies are ffmpeg, xdotool and x11-utils; user reports specifically mention trouble on Mint 22.3. Test a short clip before recording a long session.
