Short answer: buy the Linn 343 only if you want a dealer-installed reference system with built-in digital processing, amplification and far greater bass capability than a typical standmount, and you accept a launch price of £45,000–£65,000. It is a compact floorstanding speaker, not a bookshelf model. For a substantially smaller and less expensive passive system, the KEF LS50 Meta is the value-oriented choice; the Bowers & Wilkins 705 S3 is another premium passive standmount that makes sense when you prefer conventional amplification and may add a subwoofer.
There is no controlled independent head-to-head test of the 343 against either passive model. Treat the choice as a system and room decision, then audition the Linn configuration you are considering before committing at this price.

At a glance: three very different ways to build a compact high-end system
The models in this comparison share a compact-room use case, but they do not occupy the same product category. Linn positions the 343 as a compact reference floorstander. The KEF LS50 Meta and Bowers & Wilkins 705 S3 are passive standmount speakers that require separate stands, an amplifier and, depending on your bass expectations, a subwoofer.

What the Linn 343 actually is
A floorstander designed for a compact footprint
The “bookshelf speaker” label does not accurately describe the 343. Linn’s 2026 specification gives each speaker a 338 × 1091 × 466 mm cabinet-and-stand footprint and a 52 kg mass. That is a relatively narrow floorstanding form, not a cabinet intended for a shelf or a conventional speaker stand. Plan for two stable floor positions, clear access to the rear connections and enough space to move each cabinet during setup.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Linn Japan describes the design objective as “反応の速さとダイナミズム。コンパクト・リファレンススピーカー,” translated as “speed of response and dynamism. Compact reference speaker.” The physical format is therefore meant to deliver a full-range reference system without the visual bulk of a large traditional tower, not to imitate a small desktop monitor.
Exakt Integrated: the complete active architecture
The Exakt Integrated version is a four-way design. Linn’s Exakt platform performs the digital crossover, while the speaker incorporates DAC architecture and multi-amplification. In practical terms, crossover duties, conversion and power delivery are designed as one system rather than assembled from a separate preamplifier, DAC, passive crossover and power amplifier.
This integration can simplify system matching: you are not choosing an amplifier for a passive crossover or guessing whether a particular DAC and cable combination complements the speaker. It also means the purchase is less flexible than a conventional standmount. Replacing the amplifier, changing the crossover topology or moving to a different digital front end is not an ordinary component swap; you are buying into Linn’s processing and electronics architecture.

PWAB: passive upper array with powered bass
The 343 PWAB uses a three-way passive-with-active-bass arrangement. External amplification drives the upper array, while the bass section has its own internal power. This is a middle path between a conventional passive tower and the fully integrated Exakt version.
PWAB preserves the buyer’s ability to select an external amplifier for the midrange and treble, but it removes the need for that amplifier to supply the lowest-frequency power. It can therefore suit someone who already owns a preferred amplifier or wants to shape the presentation through amplifier choice, while still wanting Linn’s internally powered bass section. Confirm the exact connection and control requirements with a Linn dealer; the supplied specifications establish the architecture but do not state a universal amplifier-power recommendation.
Drivers and Linn technologies
Linn lists a 19 mm tweeter, 64 mm midrange driver, 190 mm upper-bass driver and 220 mm lower-bass driver per speaker. The company also identifies Pistonik bass technology, Linn Power DAC and Adaptive Bias Control as central technologies. Those terms describe the engineering approach, but they do not by themselves predict how the 343 will sound in your room. Placement, listening distance, recordings and system configuration remain decisive.

Price, value and the “worth it” question
Launch prices place the 343 in a different category
What Hi-Fi’s launch report dated 14 October 2026 lists the Exakt Integrated at £65,000, $97,500 and AU$139,995. The PWAB is listed at £45,000, $67,500 and AU$99,995. These are launch-report prices, not a guarantee of today’s local dealer quotation, taxes, delivery or installation charges.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHouse of Linn advertises the system from £45,500 and invites prospective buyers to book an audition. That is a dealer claim rather than a universal list price, so ask which configuration, finish, delivery and installation services are included. The difference between the dealer’s “from” figure and the launch-report PWAB price may reflect configuration, timing or regional pricing.
What the premium is buying
- A floorstanding enclosure with four-way Exakt Integrated or three-way PWAB architecture.
- In the Exakt version, digital crossover processing, DACs and amplification are supplied as part of the speaker system.
- In PWAB, the bass section is internally powered while the upper array remains dependent on your external amplifier.
- A single dealer-supported platform rather than a collection of separately matched passive components.
- Substantial bass-driver area in a cabinet that remains relatively narrow from the front.
The premium is not justified merely by the word “compact.” A passive standmount can occupy less visual space and cost a small fraction of the 343. The financial case depends on whether integrated processing, built-in amplification and a high-output floorstanding system solve a problem you actually have.
When the price is difficult to justify
Choose another route if your priority is the lowest total cost, easy component replacement, a desktop or shelf installation, or the ability to upgrade gradually. A passive speaker lets you buy stands, amplifier and subwoofer at different times. It also lets you change one part without replacing the entire electronics architecture. At £45,000–£65,000, that flexibility has real value.
Linn 343 versus KEF LS50 Meta
Architecture and setup
The LS50 Meta is a compact passive standmount built around KEF’s 12th-generation Uni-Q driver array and Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT). You provide the stereo amplifier, speaker stands and source components. A subwoofer is optional, depending on room size, listening level and how much low-frequency extension you require.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The 343 Exakt Integrated reverses that relationship: processing, conversion and amplification are built into the speaker platform. PWAB retains external amplification for the upper array but powers the bass internally. The practical question is not which logo has the better specification; it is whether you want to design the electronics chain yourself or purchase a coordinated architecture.

Bass and scale
The 343’s 190 mm and 220 mm bass drivers, floorstanding enclosure and internally powered bass in both configurations indicate a system designed for greater acoustic scale than a small standmount. That does not establish a particular in-room frequency response, maximum level or superiority in every room, because Linn’s supplied specification does not provide those measurements here.
The LS50 Meta is the more sensible choice when moderate listening levels, a small listening triangle and a separate subwoofer plan fit your priorities. It is easier to place on stands away from furniture and easier to integrate with a subwoofer using your chosen amplifier or processor. If you want one pair of speakers to provide more low-frequency weight without adding a subwoofer, the 343’s architecture is the more direct solution.
Value and upgrade path
What Hi-Fi’s 2026 bookshelf-speaker guide names the LS50 Meta “best passive overall.” That is an independent editorial recommendation for the passive category, not a claim that it outperforms the much more expensive 343 in every system. The KEF’s value comes from obtaining a mature passive design and choosing the rest of the chain to suit your budget. The Linn’s value, if it exists for you, comes from integration and system scale rather than low purchase cost.

Linn 343 versus Bowers & Wilkins 705 S3
What the published specification tells you
Bowers & Wilkins publishes a 50 Hz–28 kHz ±3 dB frequency response for the 705 S3. That is a useful boundary for planning, but it is not directly comparable to an in-room measurement for the Linn 343 because the supplied Linn material does not provide an equivalent response figure.
The 705 S3 is a conventional premium passive standmount. Budget for rigid stands and decide whether its stated low-frequency reach is sufficient for your music, films and room. A subwoofer can extend the system, but it adds another crossover, placement problem and piece of equipment.
Choosing between the two formats
- Select the 705 S3 when you prefer a conventional amplifier, want to change electronics independently and are comfortable adding a subwoofer later.
- Select the 343 PWAB when you want powered bass but still want to choose the amplifier for the upper array.
- Select the 343 Exakt Integrated when you want Linn’s digital crossover, DAC and multi-amplification delivered as one dealer-supported platform.
Do not infer a universal treble, imaging or tonal winner from driver counts or the Bowers & Wilkins response number. No controlled independent comparison of these three models was identified, so a ranking would be speculation.

Small-room fit, placement and the subwoofer decision
Footprint is more than width
A narrow floorstander can look compact from the listening position while still occupying more floor area than a standmount. The 343’s published depth is 466 mm, and each speaker weighs 52 kg including its stand. Ensure the floor can support the load, leave room to toe the cabinets in and out, and avoid placing them where doors or walkways can strike the enclosure.
Standmount systems trade floor height for equipment below the cabinet. Stands raise the acoustic centre, add their own footprint and may need filling or isolation. Measure the combined stand-and-speaker depth, not only the cabinet dimensions, before deciding that a passive pair will fit better.
When a subwoofer is sensible
A subwoofer is not automatically required with the LS50 Meta or 705 S3. Consider one if you listen to organ, electronic bass, film soundtracks or large orchestral recordings; sit far from the speakers; want high output; or need to reduce bass from the main speakers through a high-pass crossover. In a small room, room modes can make a subwoofer harder to integrate, so placement and level adjustment matter as much as the specification.
The 343’s powered bass section is intended to provide substantial low-frequency capability without an external subwoofer. That does not mean a subwoofer can never be used, only that the 343 purchase is already aimed at buyers who want more than a compact standmount normally supplies. Ask the dealer to demonstrate both a no-subwoofer setup and any recommended bass-management configuration.
Amplifier, source and dealer requirements
Exakt Integrated checklist
- Confirm which source inputs and control hardware are included in the quoted configuration.
- Ask who performs room placement, software setup and calibration, and whether those services are included in the price.
- Verify power, network and cable requirements before delivery; the supplied material does not specify a universal installation list.
- Obtain written confirmation of warranty coverage, service location and turnaround time for the digital electronics.
PWAB checklist
- Provide a compatible external amplifier for the upper array.
- Confirm how the internally powered bass section connects to mains power and how its level or crossover is controlled.
- Ask the dealer to demonstrate your amplifier, or one with a similar output and sound, rather than accepting a generic pairing.
- Budget for separate source and control components because PWAB is not a complete source-to-speaker system by itself.
Passive standmount checklist
- Choose stands that place the tweeter at the intended listening height and provide a stable, rigid platform.
- Match the amplifier to the room and listening level; neither the supplied KEF nor Bowers & Wilkins notes here provide a single mandatory amplifier model.
- Decide in advance whether a subwoofer is part of the plan, because it affects amplifier choice, placement and crossover strategy.
Sound, dispersion and imaging: what you can and cannot conclude
KEF’s Uni-Q places the tweeter and midrange in a coincident array, while MAT is intended to absorb unwanted energy behind the tweeter. Those design choices are relevant to dispersion and cabinet integration, but they do not guarantee identical imaging in every room. The 705 S3 and 343 use different driver layouts and cabinet geometries, so listening height and toe-in may produce noticeably different results.

That can reduce the number of variables in a finished system, but the benefit depends on correct setup and the quality of the source chain. PWAB and both passive alternatives leave more decisions to the owner. None of these observations substitutes for an audition from your listening seat.

Because no controlled independent head-to-head test was found, claims such as “the 343 is more detailed” or “the KEF images better” would be system-dependent opinions, not established facts. Use familiar recordings, keep volume consistent and compare each model with the electronics and placement you would actually buy.

For the passive models, the unknowns are not trivial: stands, amplifier, cables, possible subwoofer and room treatment can change the final bill substantially. For Linn, the headline price is higher but the electronics and floorstanding format are part of the proposition. Request an itemised quote so you are comparing complete systems rather than speaker-only prices.
How to decide: a practical sequence
- Set the system boundary. Decide whether you want a complete active platform, a powered-bass hybrid or a passive speaker with separate components.
- Measure the room. Record listening distance, wall positions, available depth and floor loading. Include stand dimensions for the LS50 Meta or 705 S3.
- Define bass expectations. List the recordings and soundtracks that matter. Decide whether adding and integrating a subwoofer is acceptable.
- Set the complete budget. Include amplifier, source, stands, delivery, installation and any subwoofer—not only the quoted speaker price.
- Arrange an audition. Ask for Linn 343 Exakt Integrated and PWAB demonstrations if both are under consideration, then compare the passive alternatives at a matched listening level.
- Use familiar material. Bring recordings with quiet vocals, dense orchestration, percussion transients and sustained bass. Take notes from the same seat.
- Confirm service terms. Before paying, obtain written details for warranty, software support, installation, returns and regional pricing.
Audition checklist and common buying mistakes
- Do not compare unlike configurations. A PWAB driven by an unfamiliar amplifier is not a fair proxy for an Exakt Integrated system.
- Do not mistake louder for better. Match levels as closely as possible before judging detail or bass authority.
- Do not ignore placement. A standmount on a poor stand or a floorstander pushed into a corner can invalidate the comparison.
- Do not assume a published response is a room result. The 705 S3’s 50 Hz–28 kHz ±3 dB figure is a manufacturer specification under its stated conditions, not a guarantee in your room.
- Do not buy the 343 without service clarity. Its digital and powered architecture makes dealer competence and long-term support more important than with a simple passive box.
- Do not treat “compact” as “portable.” A 52 kg speaker should be delivered and positioned with appropriate help.
Which one should you buy?
Choose the Linn 343 Exakt Integrated if you have the £65,000-class budget, want Linn’s digital crossover, DAC and multi-amplification in one coordinated platform, and value dealer demonstration and installation over component flexibility.
Choose the Linn 343 PWAB if you want the 343’s floorstanding scale and internally powered bass but prefer to select the amplifier for its upper array. It is less expensive than Exakt Integrated at launch, yet it remains a £45,000-class purchase before regional costs and any source equipment.
Choose the KEF LS50 Meta if your priority is a compact, passive and comparatively value-oriented system. Its Uni-Q and MAT design, separate amplifier choice and optional subwoofer path make it the most practical starting point for many small rooms.
Choose the Bowers & Wilkins 705 S3 if you want a premium passive standmount and are comfortable planning around its published 50 Hz lower response, dedicated stands and possible subwoofer.
The Linn 343 is worth its price only when its integrated architecture, bass capability and dealer-supported ownership solve a specific need. If you simply want the best compact speaker regardless of system cost, there is no evidence for a universal winner; audition all viable configurations in your room context and buy the one whose complete system you can support long term.
