Link to Text Fragment Chrome Extension: How to Share Highlighted Text

To link someone to a specific sentence in Chrome, select the passage, right-click it, and choose Copy Link to Selected Text when the Link to Text Fragment extension is installed. A successful selection flashes yellow; paste the resulting URL into a message or document. Current Chrome also offers a built-in Copy link to highlight command, so you may not need the extension at all.

These links use the web platform’s Text Fragments feature. The recipient’s browser tries to find the same words, scrolls to them, and emphasizes the passage. The method is convenient, but it depends on the page text staying available and distinctive.

What the Link to Text Fragment extension does

Link to Text Fragment is an open-source browser extension from GoogleChromeLabs for creating links to arbitrary text on a webpage. Instead of linking only to a page or an element with an HTML anchor, it records words from your selection in the URL fragment. A compatible browser can then locate those words when the link opens.

The project README identifies Chrome as supported and describes Edge, Firefox, and Safari as no longer supported for this extension. That is a project status, not a permanent statement about every browser’s ability to open Text Fragment URLs; browser support and store availability can change, so check the current listing before relying on the add-on.

The project is open source under the Apache 2.0 license and states, “This is not an official Google product.” Its privacy file says, “This product does not access, collect, or transmit any data.” That statement describes the extension’s behavior; it does not make text placed in a URL private. Anyone who receives the link, or systems that record URLs, may be able to see the selected words.

How to create a text-fragment link with the extension

  1. Open the webpage in Chrome and locate the passage.
  2. Drag across the exact sentence, paragraph, or range you want the recipient to see.
  3. Right-click the selection.
  4. Choose Copy Link to Selected Text.
  5. Look for a brief yellow highlight over the selection. It indicates that the extension created a link.
  6. Paste the URL into email, chat, documentation, a ticket, or a note.

The copied address still points to the original page, so the recipient must be able to reach that page. A text fragment does not bypass a login, subscription, paywall, regional block, deleted page, or other access control.

If the yellow flash never appears, creation failed. Try selecting a longer, ordinary text passage rather than a control, image, embedded viewer, or dynamically changing widget. Then open the context menu again and retry. If the command is absent, confirm that the extension is installed and enabled in Chrome; on some pages, browser security restrictions prevent extensions from operating normally.

Chrome’s built-in “Copy link to highlight” command

Recent Chrome releases document a native workflow named Copy link to highlight. The steps are similar: select text, right-click, choose the command, and paste the generated link. Chrome warns that the option may be unavailable or may not work for some selected content.

Question Link to Text Fragment extension Chrome native command
Context-menu label Copy Link to Selected Text Copy link to highlight
Installation Requires the extension to be installed and enabled Built into supported Chrome versions
Result Creates a Text Fragment URL and briefly highlights the selection Creates a Text Fragment URL when Chrome can process the selection
When it is useful When you prefer the extension workflow or your Chrome setup lacks the native command As the simplest option on a current Chrome installation
Failure behavior The command can be unavailable or fail on restricted or unsuitable content Chrome can hide the option or warn that it may not work for the selection

For ordinary webpages in a current Chrome installation, try the native command first. Keep the extension only if you specifically need its menu label or it succeeds on a selection where the native command does not.

What a #:~:text= URL means

A Text Fragment is stored after a directive marker in the URL fragment. The general form is:

Values are percent-encoded, so spaces and punctuation may appear as encoded characters rather than literal spaces. The components have distinct jobs:

Component Purpose Example form
start The words where matching begins. This is the only required text component. #:~:text=browser%20privacy
end Ends a range after the start text. It is useful when the selection contains several sentences. #:~:text=first%20sentence,final%20sentence
prefix- Adds words immediately before the start text to distinguish one occurrence from another. #:~:text=context-,target
-suffix Adds words immediately after the end or start text as additional context. #:~:text=target,-context
:~: Separates the text directive from the ordinary URL fragment. #:~:text=...

A range may cross multiple block-level elements, such as paragraphs. However, each prefix, start, end, or suffix match must fit within a single block-level element. Selecting text that begins or ends in an awkwardly split element can therefore produce a less reliable link.

How browsers find and display the passage

When a supporting browser opens the address, it searches the destination document for the specified words, scrolls the matching passage into view, and visually emphasizes it. Examples in the web platform documentation use case-insensitive matching, so capitalization alone normally does not distinguish two occurrences.

The browser is matching page text, not a permanent identifier. A short phrase such as “introduction” can appear many times, allowing the browser to choose the wrong occurrence. Prefix and suffix context make the target more specific. Selecting a complete, distinctive sentence is usually more dependable than selecting two or three common words.

The text directive is removed during loading so page author scripts cannot directly read it as an ordinary fragment value. This separation is part of the mechanism’s privacy design, but it does not hide the text from people or services that can inspect the original URL before navigation.

Why a text-fragment link may not highlight

The link opens the page but no words are highlighted

  • The recipient’s browser may not support Text Fragments or may have the feature disabled.
  • The page wording may have changed, even if the address is the same.
  • The generated text may have been altered by copying, wrapping, or rewriting the URL.
  • The selected content may have been inside a component that was not available as normal document text.

The link can still degrade to an ordinary page link when matching fails; it does not guarantee a visible highlight.

The wrong occurrence is highlighted

Recreate the link with a longer selection that includes unique wording. If you are constructing or inspecting the fragment manually, add prefix and suffix context. Avoid relying on a generic heading, menu label, or repeated legal phrase.

The context-menu command is missing

For the extension, verify that it is installed, enabled, and allowed to run in the current Chrome profile. For Chrome’s native command, update Chrome and try selecting ordinary page text rather than an image, form control, PDF viewer surface, or other special content. Chrome explicitly notes that the command is not available for every selection.

The link worked yesterday but not today

Text Fragments are vulnerable to content edits. Rewording, removing, translating, or restructuring the passage can break the match or send it to a different occurrence. Recreate the link after substantial edits, and use a conventional page URL as a fallback when the destination is maintained by someone else.

Compatibility, navigation, and security limits

The extension’s current project README lists Chrome as supported and marks Edge, Firefox, and Safari as no longer supported for the extension. Treat that information as time-sensitive. A browser can independently gain or lose support for opening Text Fragment links, and an extension listing can change.

The specification also applies user-activation and cross-origin restrictions. For a cross-origin navigation, text-directive scrolling is limited unless the navigation is user-involved or opened in a separate, noopener-style browsing context. These controls reduce the risk that a script could probe another origin and infer whether particular text exists.

These restrictions explain why a link copied from one context may behave differently when opened automatically by another site, embedded workflow, or script. A normal click or paste into the address bar is the most reliable way to test a link.

Privacy considerations before you share one

The extension’s published privacy statement says it does not access, collect, or transmit data. There is no indication in that statement of a required account or remote service for generating the link.

The URL itself is still content. Do not select passwords, private health information, confidential customer details, unpublished text, or secrets that should not appear in chat history, browser history, analytics logs, email archives, or server logs. Use a redacted passage or a normal authenticated link when the words are sensitive.

Recipients also need permission to view the page. A fragment can point to a sentence inside a private document, but it does not grant access to that document.

Best practices for dependable links

  • Select enough text: choose a distinctive sentence or a short paragraph, not a common two-word phrase.
  • Keep the selection contiguous: avoid dragging across unrelated controls, ads, captions, or hidden interface text.
  • Test the pasted address: open it in a separate tab and confirm that the intended passage is highlighted.
  • Test the audience’s context: check the page in the browser and account state your recipients are likely to use.
  • Preserve the URL exactly: messaging systems that wrap, truncate, or rewrite punctuation can damage the directive.
  • Use a conventional anchor when permanence matters: a page’s own heading or section URL is often more durable than wording-based matching.
  • Regenerate after edits: if you control the page and change its wording, create a fresh text-fragment link.

Do you still need the extension in Chrome?

For most people using a current Chrome release, no. The built-in Copy link to highlight command covers the same basic task without an added installation. It is the first option to try when it appears in the context menu.

The extension remains useful when you want its Copy Link to Selected Text workflow, when the native command is unavailable in your Chrome setup, or when your organization standardizes on the extension’s behavior. Because its browser-support statement can change, verify the current Chrome Web Store listing and project README before deploying it across a team.

Regardless of which command creates the address, the important constraints are the same: the destination must remain reachable, the selected wording must still exist, the match should be distinctive, and the recipient’s browser must support Text Fragments. A text-fragment link is a precise pointer to mutable words, not a permanent citation identifier.
