A link preview generator fetches a URL and shows the data that messaging and social platforms can use for a share card: usually a title, description, image, source domain and sometimes a favicon. For a one-off check, use a manual preview checker; for an application, retrieve the same information through a link-preview API; for a site-wide cleanup, crawl your pages and report missing or malformed metadata.
The most important source is Open Graph metadata in the page’s <head>. The Open Graph Protocol describes its goal plainly: “The Open Graph protocol enables any web page to become a rich object in a social graph.”
What a link preview generator reads
A generator downloads the URL, follows the response it can access, parses the HTML head and returns fields that can become a preview card. The core Open Graph properties are:
og:title— the headline shown in the card.og:description— supporting text.og:image— the image URL to display.og:url— the canonical URL represented by the card.og:type— the object type, such as an article or website.
Put these tags in the document head, not in visible body content. A checker can also inspect the ordinary HTML <title> and description and report fallbacks. One vendor’s API, for example, returns title, description, preview image, domain, favicon, Open Graph metadata and fallback data when Open Graph fields are absent or incomplete. That fallback behavior belongs to that API; platforms do not necessarily implement it identically.

Minimal metadata example
<head>
<title>Practical CSS Layout Guide</title>
<meta name="description" content="A hands-on guide to modern CSS layout.">
<meta property="og:title" content="Practical CSS Layout Guide">
<meta property="og:description" content="A hands-on guide to modern CSS layout.">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/layout-card.jpg">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/css-layout">
<meta property="og:type" content="article">
</head>
Use an absolute, publicly reachable image URL. A relative path, blocked asset, authentication requirement or robots/security rule can leave the card without an image even when the tag exists.
Choose the right workflow
| Goal | Best path | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Inspect one page before sharing | Manual preview checker | Which platforms it simulates, which fields it displays and whether it flags missing tags |
| Generate cards inside an app | Link-preview API | Response fields, fallbacks, redirects, incomplete metadata, rate limits, price and reliability |
| Find problems across your site | Site audit | Crawl scope, issue types, exports and whether your CMS can apply fixes in bulk |
A simulator is useful for diagnosis, but it is not proof that every live platform will render the same card. Caches, crawler permissions and platform-specific rules can change the result. When an exact production appearance matters, verify with the platform’s own current debugger as well.
How to check a URL manually
- Publish the page first. Confirm the URL works in a private browser window without a login.
- Open a checker. Paste the complete URL, including
https://, and run the inspection. - Read the raw fields. Compare the displayed title, description, image, domain and favicon with the intended card.
- Inspect Open Graph tags. Confirm that the values shown for
og:title,og:description,og:image,og:urlandog:typebelong to this page. - Fix the source HTML. Change the template or CMS fields, then republish.
- Recheck after caching has had time to clear. A checker can show newly fetched data while a social network still serves an older cached card.
What a “missing” result means
- Missing title or description: add the corresponding Open Graph tag and a normal HTML title or description as a fallback.
- Wrong image: check for duplicate
og:imagetags, an inaccessible URL, redirects or a stale cache. - Wrong canonical URL: align
og:urlwith the page’s intended canonical address, including protocol and path. - Only visible after JavaScript runs: server-render the metadata when possible. A crawler that receives an empty initial document may never see client-injected tags.
Build a simple preview extractor yourself
The following examples show the mechanics: request HTML, parse the head, prefer Open Graph values and fall back to standard title and description. They are suitable for internal tooling, not a complete production crawler. Add URL validation, redirect policy, size limits, timeouts, SSRF protection and caching before accepting arbitrary user-supplied URLs.

Run it with python preview.py https://example.com/page. The script follows requests’ normal redirect behavior and reports the final URL; production code should make redirect and network policies explicit.

Use a preview API in an application
An API avoids maintaining HTML parsers and gives your application a normalized response. Store the original URL and the fetched result separately so you can refresh metadata without losing the user’s input. Set a short connection timeout, treat non-2xx responses as failures, and cache successful results with an expiry that suits your product. Handle these cases explicitly:

- HTTP redirects, including a final URL on a different host.
- Pages with no Open Graph fields.
- Malformed HTML or a response that is not HTML.
- Images that return an error, require authentication or are too large.
- Bot checks, rate limits and transient network failures.
One documented vendor describes a free allowance of 100 monthly API requests; that limit and pricing are vendor claims that can change, so verify the current API page before committing to it.
Image size, caches and platform differences
There is no single verified “ideal” image dimension that applies identically to Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Slack and every other surface. Use a clear, appropriately proportioned source image, then check the target platform’s current documentation and debugger for its own requirements. A generator can tell you that og:image exists; it cannot guarantee how a platform will crop, resize or cache it.
If you replace an image at the same URL, a platform may continue showing the old bytes. Changing the asset URL, using the platform’s refresh control and checking the final response headers can help distinguish a stale cache from a metadata error. Do not add cache-busting query strings casually: some crawlers treat each URL as a separate object.

Troubleshooting checklist
The checker cannot fetch the page
- Test the URL without a login, VPN restriction or internal DNS name.
- Check TLS certificate validity and that the server returns HTML rather than a challenge page.
- Confirm the server permits the relevant crawler and does not require browser-only JavaScript to reveal the document.
The title or description is stale
- View the live page source, not only the rendered DOM, and confirm the new tags are in
<head>. - Look for duplicate tags; parsers may choose the first or last value.
- Refresh the platform’s debugger, then allow for its independent cache.
The image is absent
- Open the exact
og:imageURL in an unauthenticated window. - Confirm it returns an image content type, follows permitted redirects and is not blocked by hotlink protection.
- Remove conflicting duplicate image tags and use an absolute URL.
Your API service is slow or unreliable
- Use connection and total-operation timeouts.
- Retry only transient failures with exponential backoff; do not retry authentication or validation errors.
- Cache successful responses and queue bulk refreshes instead of making users wait for every fetch.
- Protect server-side fetchers against SSRF by blocking private address ranges, unsafe schemes and uncontrolled redirects.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. It can complement a metadata checker when you need the actual rendered page, not just its tags.
One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options.

Does a link preview generator create Open Graph tags for my site?
Usually no. It reads the tags your page already publishes and reports missing or malformed values; you must change your CMS template or page source.
Best Value
Why can two preview tools show different cards?
They may fetch at different times, follow different redirects, apply different fallback rules or see different cache and crawler responses. Confirm the source HTML and then check the target platform’s own debugger.
Should I use a screenshot or metadata for a share card?
Metadata is the normal source for a platform-generated card. A screenshot is useful when you need a faithful visual capture of the rendered page or a document image, but it does not replace correct Open Graph fields.
