Lines on a Lenovo laptop can come from the built-in display path or from a broader graphics or system issue. Start by noting when they appear, then compare the laptop screen with a known-good external monitor. These checks help narrow the problem, but they do not identify a failed component on their own.
First, record when and how the lines appear
Note whether the lines are horizontal or vertical, steady or intermittent, and whether the laptop was recently struck, squeezed, or dropped. Check whether they are visible on the Lenovo logo or BIOS screen, before Windows starts, or only after you sign in. This timeline helps separate issues that appear independently of the operating system from those that may relate to software or settings.

Do not treat any one observation as a diagnosis. A line visible before Windows loads makes an operating-system setting less likely to be the sole cause, but does not by itself identify which hardware component is involved.
Rule out docks and external-display settings
Disconnect docks and external displays, then restart and observe the built-in screen. Lenovo’s ideapad display troubleshooting guidance recommends removing external-display variables and checking the screen during startup.

Compare the laptop screen with an external monitor
Connect a known-good monitor using a cable and ports supported by both devices. Check that the connections are secure; Lenovo includes external-monitor and cable checks in its display troubleshooting guidance.

- The external monitor also shows lines or artifacts: the issue may extend beyond the built-in panel, but this test does not confirm a specific cause.
- The external monitor looks normal while the laptop screen remains lined: the internal display path becomes a stronger suspect, though the comparison alone cannot distinguish the panel from other parts of that path.
This is a triage check, not a component-level diagnosis. HDMI is an option only if both the laptop and monitor have compatible HDMI ports; Lenovo models do not all have the same ports.

Run Lenovo’s LCD self-test only if your model supports it
Lenovo describes an LCD self-test for supported ThinkPad, Lenovo Notebook, and ThinkBook models. Check your model’s hardware maintenance manual or Lenovo’s LCD self-test information before trying it; the test is not available on every Lenovo laptop.

On supported systems, the screen displays five solid colors. Lenovo says the test lasts about 20 seconds and exits automatically; five solid colors indicate normal LCD function during that test. That result does not prove that intermittent problems are absent or rule out every other part of the display path.
Check software when lines start with the operating system
If the lines appear only after the operating system loads or vary between applications, check display settings and the model-appropriate video driver. Lenovo’s ideapad troubleshooting steps include checking the BIOS, video driver, resolution and color settings, and brightness; its general display troubleshooting guide also covers settings, drivers, and different applications.

- Use Lenovo Support for your exact model when checking for a video driver or BIOS update.
- Do not install a generic driver or apply a BIOS update simply because lines are present. Follow model-specific instructions and update only when the symptom and guidance make it relevant.
- If the lines also appear before the operating system starts, software troubleshooting is less likely to resolve the underlying issue by itself.
When persistent lines call for service
Persistent lines, especially lines visible during startup and on the built-in screen when an external monitor is clean, are a reason to seek model-specific support rather than assume a software fix will work. Lenovo’s service manuals list horizontal or vertical lines as a display-assembly service symptom for particular model generations—not as a universal diagnosis for all Lenovo laptops.

- The ThinkPad E14 Gen 8 and E16 Gen 4 hardware maintenance manual identifies horizontal or vertical lines as a display-assembly service symptom.
- The ThinkPad L14 Gen 7 and L16 Gen 3 hardware maintenance manual likewise describes display-assembly service for line symptoms and includes an external-display check in a specified display-error procedure.
These procedures apply to the named models and should not be used as instructions to open another Lenovo laptop. For a persistent problem, contact Lenovo support or a qualified repair provider, particularly if the machine may still be covered by a warranty or service plan.

Check the exact model and warranty before buying parts
Find the laptop’s exact model before asking about service or a replacement panel. A compatible screen cannot be selected reliably from the Lenovo brand name alone, and the material available does not establish one universal part or repair price. Use Lenovo Support to check your machine’s warranty status before paying for parts or service.
Lenovo’s LCD damage guidance includes vertical lines among possible LCD damage conditions. That does not determine whether a particular repair is covered: coverage depends on the machine, service plan, region, and cause of damage. Get a case-specific answer before assuming either coverage or denial.
Avoid pressure or heat on the screen
Do not press, massage, bend, or heat the display in an attempt to remove lines. Those actions are not supported by the diagnostic guidance above and can risk further damage. Keep your observations, model information, and external-monitor result together when contacting support; they make the symptom easier to describe without implying a diagnosis.
