Linde combines industrial-gas production and delivery with engineering and construction of gas plants. That makes it more than a gas seller: its business includes customer supply networks, long-term supply arrangements and plant projects. Compared with Air Liquide, Air Products, Messer and Taiyo Nippon Sanso, the useful distinctions are product and engineering mix, local infrastructure, customer markets, geography, and contract and energy economics—not an unsupported overall ranking.

What Linde sells—and what makes its model distinctive

Linde’s portfolio spans two related businesses: industrial gases supplied to customers and engineering services for the plants that produce or process them. Its 2025 Form 10-K reports consolidated sales of $33,986 million, compared with $33,005 million in 2024 and $32,854 million in 2023. The company rounded its 2025 sales to $34 billion in its February 5, 2026 results release. Linde’s 2025 Form 10-K and results release report those figures.

Industrial gases

Linde’s atmospheric gases include oxygen, nitrogen, argon and rare gases. Its process-gas portfolio includes hydrogen, helium, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, electronic and specialty gases, and acetylene. These gases serve customers with different purity, volume and delivery requirements, from large industrial users to facilities needing packaged supply.

Engineering and plant construction

Linde also engineers and builds air-separation, hydrogen, natural-gas and other process plants. Gas supply and engineering are connected, but they are not the same activity: plant engineering involves project work, while gas sales depend on producing or sourcing gas and supplying it over time. Linde’s filing identifies competitors in both industrial gases and engineering.

How Linde supplies customers

Linde describes three main supply modes. The right one depends on how much gas a customer uses, how consistently it needs delivery, and what production or distribution infrastructure is available nearby.

Supply mode How it works What it tends to suit
Onsite A production plant is located at or near a customer’s facility and supplies gas directly, often under a long-term arrangement. Large, steady users that need substantial volumes and dependable supply.
Merchant Gas is produced at a facility, then delivered to customers in bulk, commonly by truck. Customers whose demand is too small or geographically dispersed for a dedicated onsite plant but too large for routine cylinder supply.
Packaged Gas is compressed or otherwise prepared in cylinders or other containers and distributed to customers. Smaller or intermittent requirements and locations without a direct pipeline or bulk-delivery setup.

These modes are not interchangeable in cost or logistics. Onsite supply can tie a customer closely to a plant and contract; merchant delivery depends on production and transport capacity; packaged gas relies on container handling and distribution. Linde says its network includes production facilities, pipeline complexes, distribution centers and a delivery fleet. It also says pipelines can be a competitive advantage where they provide reliable, economical supply to larger customers. That advantage is local: a global company’s presence does not establish that it has the closest plant, pipeline access or delivery capacity at any particular site. Linde’s investor strategy page describes its network and company view of the business.

Where the comparison with other suppliers is meaningful

Linde’s 2025 Form 10-K names Air Liquide, Air Products, Messer and Taiyo Nippon Sanso as competitors, alongside smaller independent producers and distributors. Their presence on the same competitor list does not make them identical businesses or establish a ranking. Compare them on specific operating dimensions instead.

Supply network and local reach

Pipeline access, nearby production, truck routes, distribution centers and cylinder availability shape service and delivered economics. These are often location-specific. A customer should evaluate whether a supplier’s network serves its site and required volumes, rather than infer local availability from the supplier’s global scale.

Gas and engineering portfolio

Compare the gases each supplier offers in the relevant market, including atmospheric gases, hydrogen, specialty and electronic gases, and other process gases. Then consider engineering separately: the ability to design and build a production plant is a different capability from delivering gas through a local network. Linde reports both activities, but the supplied company data do not establish a like-for-like ranking of competitors’ engineering businesses.

End markets and customer mix

Industrial gases support healthcare, electronics, food and beverage, chemicals, energy, manufacturing, metals and mining, among other sectors. Exposure to those customers can influence demand differently across suppliers and regions; it should not be assumed to be uniform among peers. Linde’s investor strategy page says about 62% of its sales come from healthcare, food and beverage, and electronics. That is a company-reported figure, not an independent, matched comparison across suppliers.

Geography and concentration

A supplier’s global footprint does not reveal the density of its assets around a particular customer or the share of revenue tied to a specific region or market. A rigorous peer comparison needs operating-region, site and customer data on consistent definitions. The available figures here do not support a matched comparison of the named companies’ sales, margins, market shares or backlogs.

Energy, contracts and project economics

Linde states in its 2025 Form 10-K that “Energy is the single largest cost item in the production and distribution of industrial gases.” Electricity and other energy inputs therefore matter to the economics of production and delivery. Linde says it uses pricing formulas, surcharges, cost pass-through and tolling arrangements to mitigate price swings. Those mechanisms can transfer or offset some cost changes; they do not eliminate energy exposure.

Contract terms also affect the relationship between supplier and customer. Onsite facilities and pipelines can support dependable supply for large users, while merchant and packaged channels serve different volume and logistics needs. Specific contract durations, escalation formulas and risk allocation vary; Linde’s descriptions should not be assumed to apply identically to Air Liquide, Air Products, Messer or Taiyo Nippon Sanso.

Engineering projects add a different set of economics: project scope, timing, construction execution and customer demand affect results differently from recurring gas supply. Linde’s investor strategy page currently states a project backlog of $11 billion, comprising $8.1 billion of sale-of-gas projects and $3 billion of sale-of-plant projects. These are company-stated backlog figures; the page’s definitions and reporting date matter when interpreting them, and they are not a comparable peer ranking.

Hydrogen is not one production pathway

Linde’s 2025 Form 10-K describes three hydrogen production routes: conventional production from natural gas or methane; production from fossil feedstocks with carbon capture and sequestration, described as low-carbon hydrogen; and renewable hydrogen made by electrolysis using renewable power and water. These pathways differ in inputs and process. The label “clean hydrogen” alone does not specify the production method or establish a common, independently verified emissions result.

What a fair peer comparison can—and cannot—show

The available evidence supports comparing business models and the dimensions that matter to customers, but it does not support declaring one of the named companies the largest, most profitable or best-performing on a matched basis. Such claims require aligned reporting periods, currencies, revenue definitions and segment boundaries. Air Liquide’s official publications page lists its 2025 annual report, but a company-by-company financial comparison would require examining that report and equivalent disclosures from the other suppliers. Air Liquide’s publications page lists its reports.

For a customer assessing suppliers, the practical comparison is narrower: which gases are needed, which delivery mode fits consumption, what network serves the location, and what contract and energy terms govern supply. For an industry reader comparing companies, separate recurring gas sales from engineering projects and compare financial measures only after aligning definitions and periods.
