LimeShare’s Chunked Transfers Keep a 3 GB File Under 50 MB of RAM

LimeShare’s account of its large-file transfer engine centers on a simple change: instead of loading an entire file into memory before sending it, the browser processes and uploads encrypted chunks as a stream. The originating article reports that this kept working memory below 50 MB while transferring a 3 GB file, but that figure is the author’s claim—not an independently verified benchmark across browsers or devices.

Why whole-file buffering can overwhelm a browser

A transfer workflow that reads a large file into memory before processing it can demand substantial RAM. The originating article says that this kind of whole-file buffering was behind the crashes the team wanted to address, particularly for large files and browser-based ZIP preparation. Its proposed remedy is to process the data incrementally rather than hold the complete file in memory. The article presents this as the motivation for building LimeShare.

How the chunked transfer is described

Encryption and upload happen in the browser

In Alex Vance’s September 24, 2026 article, the sender reads the file in sequential 4 MB frames, encrypts each frame with AES-256-GCM, and uploads the resulting ciphertext. The article says the encryption key is placed in the URL fragment of the share link. LimeShare’s current how-it-works documentation describes a similar flow using 4 MiB frames, an LSC1 container format, browser-generated keys, encrypted file and metadata, and multipart upload directly to object storage.

The article writes “4 MB”; the current documentation writes “4 MiB.” Those are different unit notations, so they should not be treated as identical measurements. LimeShare’s home page and FAQ currently advertise a 3 GB anonymous per-file limit. The home page and FAQ describe that service limit; it is not proof that every browser or device can handle a file of that size equally well.

The recipient decrypts while receiving the file

LimeShare says the recipient’s browser obtains the key from the link fragment and decrypts the downloaded stream locally. That design is intended to avoid sending the decryption key to the service alongside the ciphertext. The originating article also describes resumable uploads and browser-side ZIP64 generation. These are descriptions of LimeShare’s implementation, not independently audited findings.

What “zero-knowledge” and “zero-egress” mean here

In LimeShare’s stated design, the service coordinates storage and transfer while the sender encrypts files in the browser and the recipient decrypts them in the browser. The key in the link fragment is meant to remain separate from the encrypted file data uploaded to storage. The article calls this “zero-knowledge” and “zero-egress”; those labels describe the author’s claims about the architecture, not a certification or independent security assessment.

The distinction matters: client-side encryption can limit what a service can read if implemented correctly, but the sources available here do not establish an independent audit of LimeShare’s code, storage behavior, or network traffic. Readers who need assurance for confidential or regulated data should evaluate the service against their own security requirements rather than treating its terminology as proof.

What the reported memory result does—and does not—show

Vance’s article reports that transferring a 3 GB file with 4 MB frames used less than 50 MB of working RAM. That is a project-authored result; no independent benchmark or test methodology was located to confirm it. It should not be generalized to all browsers, operating systems, file types, devices, or network conditions. The current documentation’s use of 4 MiB frames is a separate description and does not independently validate the article’s memory figure.

Chunked processing can keep the amount of file data being handled at once bounded, unlike a workflow that buffers an entire file. But actual memory use can also depend on browser implementation and other parts of the application. The sources establish LimeShare’s stated design and reported result, not a universal guarantee that large transfers will never crash.

Browser behavior and transfer controls

LimeShare’s FAQ says large files stream to disk on Chrome and Edge, while Firefox, Safari, and Android use a service-worker download path. This is the vendor’s current compatibility guidance, not an independent compatibility test. The FAQ also says anonymous transfers expire after 48 hours by default, with shorter expiry choices, burn-after-download, and manual destruction. These are current vendor-stated settings and may change.

What recipients should do before opening a file

LimeShare says it cannot scan encrypted file contents, and recommends that recipients scan downloaded files with their own antivirus before opening them. That limitation follows from the stated design: if the service cannot inspect plaintext, it cannot provide its own content scan. Recipients should also consider whether they trust the sender and expect the file before opening it.

How to read the engineering claim

The project’s central engineering argument is plausible at the design level: chunked streaming avoids requiring the whole file to be resident in memory at once, while client-side encryption can keep plaintext away from the service as described. The stronger claims—less than 50 MB of RAM for a 3 GB transfer, zero-knowledge operation, and broad browser compatibility—remain claims by the article author or LimeShare because the cited material provides no independent benchmark, audit, or test report.
