The Gazette said the NFL transaction-wire entry had not yet appeared when its report was published, so the release is attributed here to that report rather than presented as independently confirmed by the league.
Why did Denver release Lil’Jordan Humphrey?
According to the Denver Gazette’s October 2 report, the Broncos signed Prentice from their practice squad to the 53-man roster and released Humphrey to open the roster spot. The report said the move was announced Friday, but had not yet appeared on the NFL transaction wire; it expected the wire entry on Saturday.
The Broncos’ move followed their March 12, 2026 announcement that they had re-signed Humphrey to a one-year contract. The Gazette described him as a candidate to replace Prentice on the practice squad, but did not report that he had been signed there. A practice-squad return should not be treated as completed without a subsequent transaction record.
Humphrey’s Denver and NFL career
Humphrey entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with New Orleans in 2019. He played for the Saints through 2021, spent the 2022 season with New England, joined Denver in 2023, and began the 2025 season with the New York Giants before returning to the Broncos. The Broncos player profile says he appeared in 10 games across the Giants and Broncos in 2025, catching 13 passes for 156 yards and one touchdown.

Career receiving totals and a games-played discrepancy
The Broncos’ March 2026 announcement and NFL.com’s career stats page both list Humphrey with 75 career receptions, 926 receiving yards and eight receiving touchdowns. Their regular-season games-played totals do not match: the Broncos profile lists 68 appearances, while NFL.com lists 69. The career receiving totals agree, but the number of games should be cited with its source.
At Texas, Humphrey played 36 games from 2016 through 2018 and recorded 125 receptions for 1,622 yards and 10 receiving touchdowns, according to the Broncos profile.

What the release does—and does not—establish
The October 2 report is the newest evidence in the cited sources about Humphrey’s roster status. The Broncos and NFL profile pages may retain older status information, so they should not override the dated release report. The report establishes a roster move as announced by Denver and explains the roster opening; it does not establish a later practice-squad signing or the end of Humphrey’s NFL career.
When Denver signed Humphrey off the Giants’ practice squad in November 2025, head coach Sean Payton said: “We know the player really well. One of his strengths is his football IQ. He can play a lot of different spots, and I think it was we had that roster availability.” That was Payton’s assessment at the time of the earlier signing, not an explanation for the October 2026 release. The quote appeared in the Broncos’ November 13, 2025 announcement.
