Yes—Lightworks works on 64-bit Windows 10. The current releases page lists Lightworks 2025.2 for Windows 64-bit, while the 2025.1 Installation and Activation Guide lists Windows 10 among supported operating systems. The practical choice is between Free, Create and Pro: Free costs £0 but is limited to 720p HD export, while Create and Pro add higher-resolution output and progressively more advanced production tools.
Does Lightworks work on Windows 10?
Lightworks is a downloadable, non-linear video editor rather than a browser-based editing service. Windows 10 is explicitly listed as supported in LWKS’s 2025.1 Installation and Activation Guide. The current releases page lists a Windows 64-bit installer for Lightworks 2025.2.

The 2025.2 release entries identify build 2025.2-56344 as a November 2025 release and build 2025.2-56356 as a January 2026 bug-fix release. For a new installation, use the Windows 64-bit installer offered on the current LWKS releases or download flow rather than an old third-party mirror.
Windows 10 compatibility does not guarantee a particular editing speed. Playback and export depend on the codec, frame size, effects, number of streams and the speed of the drive holding your media. Treat the published specifications as a readiness check, not as a performance benchmark.

Which Lightworks plan should you use?
Lightworks has three tiers. The Free plan is sufficient for basic timeline editing and 720p delivery. Create is the practical step up for 4K work and more sophisticated graphics, colour and audio controls. Pro is aimed at users who need professional interchange, 10-bit workflows, a wider format range, plug-ins and cloud features.
| Capability | Free | Create | Pro |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price model | £0 | Paid, pay-once licence | Paid, pay-once licence |
| Export resolution | 720p HD export | 4K video export | Higher-resolution export, including the Create level |
| Core editing | Timeline editing, automatic saving and advanced transitions | Everything in Free | Everything in Create |
| Visual effects and titles | Simple VFX | Social-media templates, NewBlue Titler Pro and dynamic motion graphics | Advanced video effects and NewBlue TotalFX support |
| Colour | Basic tier tools | Colour controls and quick LUT support | Advanced colour scopes |
| Audio | Basic editing tools | Advanced audio EQ | Audio plug-in support |
| Proxy and timeline work | Standard Free workflow | High-resolution proxy editing and high-resolution timeline rendering | Includes Create workflow plus Pro formats and effects |
| Formats and interchange | Free-tier export options | Create-tier export options | 10-bit support, increased file formats, custom format creation and export interchange formats |
| Plug-ins and cloud | Not included as Pro features | Not included as Pro features | Video plug-ins, cloud export/upload and the Pro feature set |
| Quality control | Not listed as a Pro feature | Not listed as a Pro feature | In-timeline QC with a valid QScan licence |
When Free is enough
Choose Free when your finished files can be delivered at 720p HD and you mainly need cuts, transitions, automatic saving and simple visual effects. It is also a sensible way to learn the interface before paying for features you may not use.
The pricing page does not list a separate 1080p line item for Free. It explicitly lists 720p HD for Free and 4K video export for Create, so anyone who needs a confirmed 4K-capable export path should select Create or Pro rather than assuming the Free limit will cover it.

When Create is the right upgrade
Create is the middle tier for creators who need 4K output without the full Pro toolset. Its additions include social-media templates, NewBlue Titler Pro, dynamic motion graphics, colour controls, advanced audio EQ, quick LUT support, high-resolution proxy editing and high-resolution timeline rendering. Those features matter when a project contains more than straightforward cuts and titles.

- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
When Pro is justified
Pro is the specialist option. It adds 10-bit support, audio and video plug-ins, more file formats, advanced video effects, custom format creation, NewBlue TotalFX, export interchange formats, advanced colour scopes and cloud export/upload. In-timeline QC is available when a valid QScan licence is present. Select Pro because a specific workflow requires one of those capabilities, not simply because it has the highest name.
How Lightworks licensing works
Activation is account-based. You sign in to the Lightworks application with your LWKS account, and the licence attached to that account determines the available features.
- Free: the licence expires every 90 days. Signing in again with your username and password renews it.
- Create and Pro perpetual licences: they do not expire for the current major release. A later major release may require an upgrade.
- Pay-once wording: LWKS describes the paid model as “Pay once, and OWN IT FOREVER! No subscription needed.” That statement concerns ownership of the perpetual licence for its applicable major release, not an automatic entitlement to every future major version.
Keep access to the account used during activation. If a Free installation appears inactive after the 90-day period, sign in again before reinstalling the software or changing project files.

| Component | Published requirement | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 is supported; use 64-bit Windows for the current installer | Check that Windows itself is 64-bit before downloading the Windows 64-bit build |
| Processor | 2GHz CPU; multicore or multiprocessor recommended | A faster or multicore processor gives more headroom for decoding, effects and exports, but the specification is not a speed guarantee |
| Memory | 4GB RAM minimum; 8GB recommended | The 4GB/8GB figures are published for the documented NewBlue tools |
| Graphics | NVIDIA or AMD GPU with OpenGL 2.1 | Verify the GPU driver and OpenGL support rather than relying only on the model name |
| Graphics memory | 1GB VRAM minimum; 4GB recommended for the documented NewBlue tools | More VRAM can help with larger timelines and effects, but it does not remove codec or storage bottlenecks |
Before installation, open Windows’ System information to confirm the 64-bit edition and installed RAM. Check the GPU vendor and driver in Device Manager or the manufacturer’s control panel. If the machine only meets the minimums, use lower preview quality, proxies and short test exports before committing to a large project.
Supported media and professional workflows
The technical specifications list broad container support, including MXF OP1a, MXF OPAtom, Avid, QuickTime, AVI, MTS/M2TS and MPG/MP4, among other import and export formats. The exact codec inside a container still matters: two MP4 files can require very different decoding resources, and a supported container does not mean every codec or camera variant behaves identically.
Create adds high-resolution proxy editing and high-resolution timeline rendering. Pro extends the workflow with 10-bit support, additional formats, custom format creation and export interchange formats. Those distinctions are important for broadcast, colour-critical or multi-application projects where moving a timeline between tools is part of the process.

How to download and install Lightworks on Windows 10
- Confirm the platform. Make sure the computer is running 64-bit Windows 10 and meets the CPU, RAM, GPU and VRAM checks above.
- Open the official LWKS download flow. Use the Lightworks download or releases area at lwks.com, not an unofficial repackaged installer.
- Select a tier. Choose Free, Create or Pro before clicking the Windows download option. Your selection determines the licence features available after sign-in.
- Use an administrator account. The Windows installation article instructs users to be logged into Windows with administrator privileges. If your account is standard, have an administrator approve the installer.
- Run the Windows installer. Open the downloaded installer and follow its prompts. Keep the default installation location unless your organisation has a documented deployment path.
- Launch Lightworks and sign in. Enter the LWKS username and password associated with the chosen licence. Sign-in activates Free and validates Create or Pro access.
- Check the release and licence. Confirm that the installed build is the intended 2025.2 Windows 64-bit release and that the application shows the expected tier.
- Test a short project. Import a representative clip, add the effects and titles you expect to use, and perform a short export at the required resolution and format.
Do not delete the installer or change accounts until the test export succeeds. A quick test catches an unsupported codec, missing GPU capability, wrong licence tier or insufficient storage before those issues affect a complete edit.
Export and workflow checks before you start editing
- Confirm the delivery resolution: Free is advertised for 720p HD; Create is advertised for 4K video export.
- Confirm the required format: Pro’s increased format support and interchange exports matter if another editor, broadcaster or post-production system must receive the project.
- Confirm colour depth: choose Pro when a 10-bit workflow is required.
- Confirm plug-ins and effects: NewBlue Titler Pro and dynamic motion graphics are Create features; NewBlue TotalFX and broader plug-in support are Pro features.
- Confirm audio needs: Create adds advanced EQ, while Pro adds audio plug-in support.
- Confirm cloud delivery: cloud export/upload is a Pro capability.
Troubleshooting common Windows 10 problems
The installer will not run
Check that you downloaded the Windows 64-bit installer and that your Windows account has administrator privileges. A damaged download or a security product blocking an unknown installer can also stop setup; download a fresh copy from the official LWKS flow rather than using a mirror.
Lightworks opens, but a feature is locked
Sign out and back in with the account that owns the licence, then verify the selected tier. Free, Create and Pro expose different export, effects, format, audio and cloud features. NewBlue tools may also require an active licence even when the application itself launches normally.
Recommended Free Tools
Playback is stuttering
Reduce preview quality, generate proxies where the selected tier supports them, close other demanding applications and test media from a faster drive. Check the source codec and effects stack; meeting the published CPU, RAM and GPU minimums does not guarantee real-time playback for every combination.

The Free licence appears expired
Free licences expire every 90 days. Sign back into Lightworks with the original username and password to renew the licence. Reinstalling is not the normal renewal procedure.
A perpetual licence does not activate a newer release
Create and Pro perpetual licences apply to the current major release. If the software has moved to a later major version, an upgrade may be required even though the original licence itself has not reached an expiry date.
What about the Lightworks Console?
The Installation and Activation Guide includes a Lightworks Console installation section, confirming that dedicated control hardware exists in the Lightworks ecosystem. The cited documentation does not identify a current retail model, price or availability, so Windows 10 users should not assume that a particular console can be purchased or supported without checking current LWKS information.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Free, Create or Pro: a practical decision
| Your requirement | Best starting tier | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Learning the editor or delivering 720p videos | Free | It costs £0 and includes core timeline editing, automatic saving, transitions and simple VFX |
| 4K delivery, social templates or richer title and motion work | Create | It adds 4K export, NewBlue Titler Pro, motion graphics, colour controls, EQ and high-resolution proxy features |
| 10-bit media, plug-ins, advanced scopes or interchange formats | Pro | Those are specifically listed among Pro’s professional capabilities |
| Cloud export/upload | Pro | Cloud export and upload are Pro features |
| Lowest financial commitment while evaluating compatibility | Free | You can test the interface and your media, but remember the 720p export limit and 90-day sign-in renewal |
For most Windows 10 users, the decisive question is export and workflow rather than whether the editor will launch. If 720p is sufficient, start with Free. If the delivery specification is 4K or the project needs Create-level graphics and proxy tools, choose Create. Use Pro only when its 10-bit, plug-in, format, interchange, colour-scope, QC or cloud capabilities are part of the job.
