Neither Lidl nor Aldi is the better choice for every shopper. The right one depends on which stores are near you, what you buy regularly, the prices and offers in your local market, and whether each store carries the products you need. Compare your usual basket at nearby locations rather than relying on a universal claim that one chain is always cheaper or has more choice.
Start with the stores in your country and area
Lidl and Aldi do not have one identical offer worldwide. Store formats, product ranges, prices, rewards, and services can differ by country and sometimes by location. ALDI’s international site directs shoppers to national websites and lists Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd separately for Germany. Check the local store sites or apps for the locations you actually use before comparing details. Which store is cheaper for your regular shop?
The available information does not establish that Lidl or Aldi is consistently cheaper on a current, like-for-like basket. Prices depend on location, product size and quality, temporary promotions, and any member pricing. A comparison from one store or one week is not a reliable verdict for other shoppers.

- Write down the groceries you regularly purchase, including the product type, size, and any brand or dietary requirement that matters.
- Check the prices at nearby Lidl and Aldi locations on the same day. Compare equivalent quantities and quality, not just package prices.
- Record promotions separately from ordinary shelf prices, and note whether a discount requires an account, app, or other condition.
- Add up the cost of the items you would genuinely buy at each store. If one store does not stock an essential item, include the cost and time of getting it elsewhere.
Repeat the check if your shopping varies seasonally or you rely on changing offers. A discount only helps when it applies to something already on your list.

How much choice and what kinds of products matter?
Both stores can suit shoppers who want a focused grocery shop, but the range available depends on the market and store. In the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority’s provisional findings described Aldi and Lidl GB and NI as carrying a full range of groceries while potentially offering less choice within some categories than certain other large grocers. That proceeding concerned grocery land-agreement rules; it was not a price, quality, or head-to-head product-range test, and the announcement said no final decision had been made. Lidl’s US offer
Lidl US describes its selection as curated, with local produce, fresh meat and seafood, imported cheeses and specialties, European pastries, and rotating non-food products such as clothing and cookware. Make the comparison around your must-haves
- Check whether both stores stock the staples, brands, and dietary products your household relies on.
- Consider fresh-food and bakery options, imported specialties, and non-food finds only if they are part of your shopping habits.
- Think about how often you would need a second stop to fill gaps in the range.
Are rewards and apps worth factoring in?
Rewards are useful only when the terms fit purchases you planned to make. In the United States, Lidl says its Lidl Plus app became available to download on July 1, 2026, with exclusive offers beginning July 15, 2026. Its US FAQ describes a free program with points, member-exclusive offers, personalized coupons, digital receipts, and weekly ads; it also says shoppers can shop without an account. Include convenience, not just the receipt total
A small difference in basket cost may not be worthwhile if it means a longer trip or another stop for missing items. Compare the stores’ distance, opening hours, availability of your usual products, and how easy it is to complete the shop. The best fit is the one that works for your routine, not merely the one with the lowest price on a single item.
