Choose satellite imagery for broad-area, repeatable monitoring of forest cover and change; LiDAR when vertical structure or canopy height is central; and drone mapping when you need fine local detail and can safely and lawfully fly repeat surveys. None is a universal winner. Biomass estimates generally need models calibrated with field plots, and combining broad satellite coverage with LiDAR or drone detail can be more useful than treating the technologies as competitors.
What each method measures best
The three approaches differ in scale and in what they observe. Satellite imagery is well suited to viewing large areas repeatedly. LiDAR samples forest structure in three dimensions. Drone photogrammetry reconstructs visible surfaces and features from overlapping images collected over a local site. The right choice depends on the forest attribute you need—not simply which sensor sounds most advanced.

Satellite imagery: broad coverage and change over time
Use satellite imagery when the monitoring question spans a large region or concerns forest extent, disturbance, or recovery. The U.S. Forest Service describes using historical Landsat imagery to study disturbance regimes and recovery. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations also identifies remote sensing as part of forest assessment and monitoring.

LiDAR: vertical forest structure
LiDAR measures distances using laser returns, providing observations of forest structure at the scale and pattern of its acquisition. It is a strong fit when canopy height, vertical profiles, or structural variation matter. Acquisition may be airborne or spaceborne; the latter is not necessarily a continuous wall-to-wall survey.
For example, NASA’s overview of the GEDI forest-structure mission describes spaceborne LiDAR observations. The U.S. Forest Service’s 2024 study by May, Dubayah, Bruening, and Gaines illustrates how sampled spaceborne LiDAR can be connected to national forest inventory plots to produce a spatially complete aboveground biomass density map for the contiguous United States at 1 km resolution. That is a specific scaling workflow, not a guarantee that any LiDAR dataset yields a complete or equally precise biomass map.

Drone mapping: close detail over a local site
Drone photogrammetry uses overlapping photographs to reconstruct visible surfaces and features in three dimensions. It can support detailed local mapping and repeat surveys where flights are accessible, safe, and lawful. It is not equivalent to LiDAR: image-based reconstruction depends on visible surfaces, while LiDAR records laser returns from its acquisition geometry. Dense canopy, occlusion, terrain, and the quality of image coverage can affect what a photogrammetric model captures.

Which method fits your monitoring question?
| Monitoring need | Best starting point | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Forest extent, disturbance, or recovery across a large region | Satellite imagery | Confirm the product’s sensor, target variable, and validation; structural or biomass outputs may depend on models and ground reference data. |
| Canopy height, vertical profiles, or forest structure | LiDAR | Check whether coverage is continuous or sampled, and whether its acquisition scale matches the management area. |
| Detailed repeat mapping of an accessible local site | Drone photogrammetry | Plan for flight access, safe and lawful operations, image processing, and limitations where surfaces are obscured. |
| Biomass or carbon estimation | Often a combination of LiDAR or imagery with field plots and a suitable model | A sensor measurement alone is not automatically a validated biomass or carbon estimate. |
For biomass, the U.S. Forest Service’s 2024 contiguous-U.S. mapping study is an example of linking spaceborne LiDAR with national forest inventory plots. Its reported comparison at a 64,000-hectare scale belongs to that study’s workflow and should not be treated as a general accuracy figure for LiDAR or other regions.
Can drones measure tree height or biomass?
Drones can support tree-height estimates when imagery, terrain information, and processing allow the relevant canopy and ground surfaces to be compared. But a drone-derived surface model is not automatically a direct measurement of every tree’s height, especially where canopy or terrain is difficult to observe. Biomass is a further step: it is generally estimated by relating sensor-derived variables to field measurements through a model.

In the Oregon plot study by Fankhauser, Strigul, and Gatziolis, UAS tree counts agreed with field data at r² = 0.84, while airborne laser scanning tree counts agreed with field data at r² = 0.93. For mean plot tree height, UAS estimates compared with field inventory at r² = 0.82 and RMSE = 2.92 m; comparison of UAS estimates with ALS gave r² = 0.97 and RMSE = 1.04 m. These are results from a subsample of National Forest plots in Oregon, not general performance guarantees for other forests, sensors, or workflows.

Biomass performance can also vary with ecosystem and model design. In a 2020 Southcentral Alaska tall-shrub study, Alonzo and coauthors reported that G-LiHT structure-from-motion color and structure variables produced the best reported model at 5 m resolution, with R² = 0.81 and RMSE = 1.09 kg m⁻²; lidar-only models reported R² = 0.74 and RMSE = 1.26 kg m⁻². The result applies to that shrub ecosystem and model comparison; it does not establish that imagery generally outperforms LiDAR. The study also identifies existing LiDAR terrain information and local field calibration data as useful.

Is LiDAR more accurate than satellite imagery?
There is no defensible universal ranking without specifying the forest attribute, sensor, coverage, scale, and validation data. LiDAR directly samples vertical structure, which can make it the more relevant tool when height or canopy profile is the target. Satellite imagery is often the practical choice for consistent broad-area observation, particularly for cover and change. For biomass, both can contribute to estimates, but the model and its ground reference data matter.
Accuracy figures from different studies are not interchangeable: they may describe different forests, outcomes, spatial resolutions, and reference datasets. Compare methods against the same target variable and field reference design for the area you actually manage or report on.
When should you combine methods?
Combine methods when one sensor cannot meet both the coverage and detail requirements. Satellite imagery can identify broad patterns or changes; LiDAR or drone photogrammetry can add structural detail over selected areas; and field plots can ground the estimates or calibrate models. This design can also help focus expensive or operationally demanding measurements where they are most informative.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe best combination depends on whether the goal is a wall-to-wall map, repeated change detection, local structure, or a defensible biomass estimate. Do not assume that adding sensors automatically improves an estimate: the datasets need compatible timing, spatial alignment, and a calibration or validation plan appropriate to the target.
How to choose for a real project
- Define the decision and target variable. Specify whether you need disturbance, forest cover, tree counts, canopy height, vertical structure, biomass, or carbon. These are distinct outputs and may require different validation.
- Set the area and revisit need. Decide how much land must be covered, how often observations are needed, and whether the output must be wall-to-wall or can use sampled locations.
- Match spatial detail to the decision. Broad regional monitoring points toward satellite imagery; detailed local surveys may justify drone mapping; vertical structure may call for LiDAR.
- Account for forest and terrain conditions. Consider canopy closure, forest type, terrain, and season. These conditions affect visibility, sensor returns, field access, and the suitability of models.
- Check operational constraints. For drones, confirm flight access, permissions, safety, and the capacity to conduct repeat surveys. Do not assume a drone is suitable simply because the site is small.
- Plan field calibration and validation. If estimating biomass or another derived attribute, determine whether representative plots and a suitable model are available. Set aside independent reference data where needed to assess results.
- Confirm processing capacity and acceptable uncertainty. Account for analyst time, data storage, processing, and the uncertainty acceptable for the management or reporting decision.
There is no established, geographically comparable cost figure that ranks these methods. Operational cost depends on the area, revisit schedule, sensor or data source, fieldwork, permissions, processing, and required uncertainty; compare project-specific scopes rather than assuming one method is always cheapest.
