LiDAR vs Photogrammetry for Documenting Archaeological Footprints

Use close-range photogrammetry as the default for visible archaeological footprints. With controlled overlap, scale, ground control and lighting, a camera-based structure-from-motion (SfM) workflow normally delivers the most useful combination of metric geometry, photographic texture and low equipment cost. Choose terrestrial or other LiDAR when texture is weak, lighting is difficult, rapid geometric capture is critical, or trench walls and other occluded edges cannot be photographed well. For complicated excavations, registering LiDAR to a controlled photogrammetric model is often the strongest option.

What each method records

Close-range photogrammetry

Photogrammetry reconstructs three-dimensional geometry from overlapping photographs. Software identifies common features in successive images, estimates camera positions, generates a calibrated point cloud and interpolates a mesh. The same images preserve natural color, sediment boundaries, cracks, tool marks and other visual evidence that can be difficult to interpret from geometry alone.

For a footprint or short trackway, the camera can be moved around the feature at several heights and oblique angles. The result can include a dense point cloud, textured mesh, orthophoto and elevation model. Because the method depends on matching visible image features, the surface needs enough texture and the lighting should remain stable during the sequence.

Terrestrial, structured-light and mobile LiDAR

LiDAR measures distance directly with laser pulses or projected light patterns, producing a point cloud without requiring photographic texture. It is less sensitive to surface color and illumination than photogrammetry, which helps on uniform sediment, shadowed surfaces or scenes where changing light makes image matching unreliable. A scanner can also capture geometry quickly and may see parts of a trench that a camera position misses.

LiDAR does not automatically provide the photographic texture needed to distinguish subtle sediment changes or impressions. Some systems add color from photographs, but that introduces a separate imaging workflow. Mobile-phone and tablet LiDAR can be useful for gap filling, although their range, resolution and accuracy differ substantially from survey-grade terrestrial scanners.

Decision matrix for a footprint project

Project condition Preferred approach Reason
Clearly visible footprint on a textured surface Close-range photogrammetry Captures metric shape and high-value photographic color and texture at relatively low equipment cost.
Uniform, glossy, dusty or very dark surface with few trackable features LiDAR, or LiDAR added to photogrammetry Direct ranging is less dependent on image texture.
Strong shadows or changing sunlight during capture LiDAR or controlled indoor photogrammetry Photogrammetric matching can degrade when illumination changes between images.
Trench walls, recesses and obstructed footprint edges Terrestrial LiDAR or hybrid capture Additional scanner positions can reach geometry hidden from camera viewpoints.
Need to interpret sediment, impressions and tool marks Photogrammetry, with LiDAR for missing areas Photographic texture supplies visual evidence that a geometry-only cloud may lack.
Individual prints or a short trackway Close-range photogrammetry Short working distances and oblique images provide high detail.
Whole-site or landscape coverage UAV photogrammetry, with ground control Aerial imagery covers broad areas efficiently; close-range capture remains necessary for fine footprint detail.

What published case studies show

The numbers below are results from particular campaigns, not universal specifications or guarantees for every camera, scanner or phone.

Study and setting Compared methods or result How to use the evidence
Halos, Greece (Waagen and Lanjouw, 2026) An Artec Leo structured-light scanner, a Nikon D5300 with Agisoft Metashape photogrammetry, and iPhone PolyCam low-cost LiDAR were tested on the same excavation profile. Geometry, texture, expertise, ergonomics, processing time, precision and accuracy were evaluated. Useful direct evidence that equipment and workflow trade-offs can be measured on one profile; it does not make one device best for every site.
Cantillana, Spain (Applied Sciences, 2021) In a Roman mosaic excavation, SfM photogrammetry was reported as the most accurate and least limiting technique for the semi-buried context. TLS was reported as 40 times more expensive, while SfM produced 10 times more points. These are case-study cost and point-density comparisons, not universal prices or performance guarantees.
Laetoli, Tanzania (Ruther, Smit and Kamamba, 2013) Independent photogrammetric and laser-scan point clouds of an excavated hominid trackway agreed to approximately 0.3–0.4 mm external accuracy. Shows that independently checked methods can agree very closely in a controlled heritage survey; it is not a promise for a phone or an uncontrolled camera sequence.
Thessaloniki Toumba, Greece (ISPRS, 2021) TLS, UAV photogrammetry, close-range photogrammetry and topographic surveying all produced accurate digital surface models and photorealistic 3D outputs. Close-range imagery achieved better accuracy than UAV imagery in that campaign. Supports matching capture scale to the question: use close range for detail and UAV imagery for coverage.
Cahokia Mounds, Illinois (Vilbig, Sagan and Bodine, 2020) UAV photogrammetry was described as a low-cost, comparable alternative to available LiDAR in areas with low-lying vegetation. Time, resources and vegetation—not a blanket method ranking—should drive the choice.
Tindari, Italy (ISPRS, 2026) UAV and terrestrial photogrammetry supplied the metric framework; iPad Pro LiDAR was added selectively to improve completeness in occluded or hard-to-access areas. Demonstrates a practical hybrid: retain a controlled primary model and use mobile LiDAR where photographs cannot reach.

When photogrammetry is the better first choice

Visible texture and stable lighting

Photogrammetry is strongest when every part of the footprint has recognizable image detail. Natural grain, small stones and sediment variation help the software match points. Photographing under diffuse, stable light reduces harsh shadows that can be mistaken for depth and prevents the appearance of the surface from changing between frames.

Interpretation needs color as well as shape

A footprint is often identified through the relationship between a depression, its rim, infill and surrounding sediment. A textured mesh or orthophoto lets analysts inspect those distinctions directly. Record the original photographs because later reprocessing may improve alignment or permit a different interpretation without returning to a fragile excavation.

Limited equipment budget

A camera, scale bars and targets can cost less than a survey-grade scanner. The Cantillana study’s 40-times TLS cost difference illustrates how large the gap can be in one project, while the Halos comparison shows that a Nikon D5300 and Agisoft Metashape can form a documented photogrammetric setup. Equipment cost is only one part of the budget: include targets, surveyed control, operator time, processing hardware and archival storage.

When LiDAR deserves priority

Textureless or visually difficult surfaces

Laser or structured-light measurements do not need the same photographic feature density. If a cleaned surface is nearly uniform, wet, deeply shadowed or affected by glare, LiDAR can provide a more reliable geometric starting point. Scan quality still depends on range, incidence angle, resolution and registration, so inspect the resulting point spacing rather than assuming that every laser cloud is high resolution.

Occlusion and restricted access

Footprint edges can disappear behind trench walls, balks, protective coverings or adjacent features. A scanner placed at additional stations may see those areas without requiring a camera to occupy the same viewpoint. Mobile LiDAR is particularly useful for selective gap filling, but its output should be registered to surveyed control and treated according to the device’s demonstrated accuracy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rapid geometric capture

LiDAR can reduce the number of photographs and the image-alignment burden when the immediate requirement is a geometric record. The scanner still needs a stable coordinate frame, overlap between stations and quality checks. If color interpretation matters later, collect photographs even when LiDAR is the primary geometry source.

A defensible close-range photogrammetry workflow

  1. Set the coordinate frame. Establish a surveyed reference system before imaging. Place scale bars or clearly measured ground-control points around the footprint set, not only along one edge. Record their coordinates, identifiers and dimensions.
  2. Prepare the surface. Remove only material permitted by the excavation plan. Note moisture, loose sediment, protective films and anything that could move between images. Keep people, tools and shadows out of the capture area.
  3. Plan image overlap. Circle the prints at several heights and include oblique views that show sidewalls and heel-to-toe relief. Maintain substantial overlap between neighboring frames so the software can match common features. Add higher images for the overall set and lower images for individual impressions.
  4. Lock capture conditions. Use sharp images at a consistent focus and exposure. Avoid changing the light direction, moving lamps or allowing sun and cloud transitions during the sequence. A remote trigger or timed interval reduces camera shake.
  5. Include scale in every relevant view. Keep scale bars and control points visible in enough images for a robust solution. Do not rely on an object of assumed size, such as a boot or trowel, as the only scale reference.
  6. Process with recorded settings. Import the original files into a calibrated SfM workflow such as Agisoft Metashape. Preserve camera calibration, alignment settings, dense-cloud parameters, filtering choices, mesh resolution and coordinate-system information.
  7. Generate products. Build the calibrated point cloud, mesh, textured model, orthophoto and elevation products needed by the project. Export lossless or otherwise documented formats and retain the project file so another analyst can reproduce the outputs.
  8. Check independently. Use checkpoints that were not used to solve the model. Calculate residuals in the project’s coordinate units, inspect local distortions and compare measured distances against independent survey observations.
  9. Archive the evidence. Keep original images, control observations, processing logs, software version, exports and a description of lighting and field conditions. Record any images removed for blur or obstruction and explain why.

Adding LiDAR to the workflow

  1. Scan the gaps. Target textureless patches, trench walls, recesses and edges hidden from the camera. Capture enough overlap between scanner positions for reliable registration.
  2. Measure control. Use the same surveyed coordinate frame as the photogrammetric model. Place or identify common targets and record scanner position, range settings and resolution.
  3. Register and inspect. Align the LiDAR cloud to the controlled photogrammetric cloud, then inspect tie-point residuals and seams. A visually smooth merge is not proof of metric agreement.
  4. Preserve provenance. Keep the raw scan stations and registration report separately from the merged model. Identify which surfaces came from photographs, LiDAR or both.
  5. Use texture carefully. If photographs provide color for the LiDAR geometry, document the camera model, image set and texture-mapping process. Do not imply that a colored LiDAR cloud has the same photographic resolution as the source images.

Hybrid capture: a practical decision

A hybrid workflow is justified when one method solves a specific weakness of the other. Build the primary, controlled model with close-range photographs when footprints are visible and richly textured. Add terrestrial or phone LiDAR only where photographs leave holes or unstable geometry. The Tindari campaign used this selective strategy, combining UAV and terrestrial photogrammetry with iPad Pro LiDAR for occluded or hard-to-access areas.

For a trench with many recesses, begin by surveying control and photographing all accessible surfaces. Scan the inaccessible edges from multiple stations, then register the scan to the photogrammetric coordinate frame. This avoids replacing high-value photographic texture across the entire trench merely because a small fraction is occluded.

Accuracy, precision and what to report

Do not treat point density as accuracy

A dense cloud can still be warped, incorrectly scaled or locally noisy. Conversely, a sparser cloud can support reliable measurements when control and independent checks are strong. The Cantillana result of 10 times more points for SfM describes that study’s output density; it does not establish that every SfM model is more accurate than every TLS model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use checkpoints and residuals

Separate control points used to orient the model from checkpoints used only for evaluation. Report residuals in three dimensions, the number and distribution of checkpoints, and any areas with weak geometry. Include the survey instrument and method used to establish the reference coordinates.

State the limits of the evidence

The Laetoli comparison reached approximately 0.3–0.4 mm external agreement, but that value came from one controlled heritage survey. A low-cost camera or phone can produce a defensible record only when its actual error is demonstrated for the scene, scale and processing settings. If no independent accuracy check was possible, report that limitation instead of assigning a precision the workflow did not establish.

Low-cost camera and phone options

Camera-based kit

A consumer interchangeable-lens camera such as the Nikon D5300, used in the Halos comparison, can support close-range photogrammetry when paired with measured scale, adequate lighting and disciplined overlap. The camera body alone is not the determinant of accuracy. Lens choice, focus stability, motion blur, depth of field, image compression and control-point geometry often matter more.

Phone or tablet LiDAR

Phone and tablet LiDAR can be practical for reconnaissance, quick documentation and filling occluded portions. PolyCam on an iPhone was included in the Halos comparison, and an iPad Pro LiDAR sensor was used selectively at Tindari. Those examples demonstrate feasibility, not equivalence to a survey-grade terrestrial scanner. Validate scale and residuals on your own footprint set, and keep the raw device data and app settings.

Choosing capture scale

Individual footprints and short trackways

Work close to the surface. Oblique images reveal the depth and sidewalls of each impression, while a higher ring of images preserves the relationship among prints. Close-range photogrammetry outperformed UAV imagery in the Thessaloniki Toumba campaign, illustrating why altitude should not replace detail-oriented capture.

Excavation areas and landscapes

UAV photogrammetry is efficient for site-wide coverage and can be comparable to available LiDAR in low-lying vegetation, as reported at Cahokia Mounds. It should not be the only capture for fine footprint morphology when the aircraft must remain high or when vegetation hides the surface. Use surveyed ground control and supplement selected prints with close-range images.

Common failure modes and fixes

Model will not align

Add more oblique overlap, remove blurred frames, ensure control points are visible in multiple images and avoid a sequence captured while shadows move dramatically. A nearly textureless surface may require projected texture, careful lighting or LiDAR support.

Model is scaled incorrectly

Check that scale bars were entered with their measured dimensions and that the coordinate units are correct. Recalculate with independent checkpoints; do not correct the model by stretching it to match one convenient distance.

Footprint edges look melted or noisy

Increase image resolution at the feature, use a smaller capture distance, improve depth of field and add oblique views. Inspect whether loose sediment moved between frames. If the edge remains hidden, scan it from another position and document the source of the replacement geometry.

Texture is attractive but measurements disagree

Separate the textured appearance from geometric validity. Review control distribution, camera calibration, lens distortion, alignment residuals and local point density. Compare the model with checkpoints or an independent scan before using it for metric claims.

LiDAR and photographs do not merge cleanly

Confirm that both datasets use the same coordinate frame, identify common targets or surveyed features and inspect registration residuals. Keep the unmerged datasets so a future analyst can test a different transformation without losing provenance.

Reporting a footprint record

A publication-quality record should state the method, sensor and software, capture date, coordinate reference, control and checkpoint strategy, image or scan count, approximate point spacing, processing parameters, measured residuals and known blind spots. Include orthophotos or shaded-relief views alongside the textured model so readers can distinguish color interpretation from elevation evidence. Identify whether each measurement came from the raw point cloud, a filtered cloud, a mesh or an interpolated raster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For repeat monitoring, retain the same control monuments and document any changed lighting, moisture, erosion or conservation treatment. Comparing models from different dates is meaningful only after they share a stable reference frame and have comparable error estimates.

Bottom line for field planning

For most exposed archaeological footprints, start with controlled close-range photogrammetry: it is economical, rich in visual information and capable of strong metric results when scale and checkpoints are handled rigorously. Select LiDAR when texture, lighting or access undermines photographic reconstruction, and use a registered hybrid when only part of the scene needs the scanner. The defensible choice is the workflow whose errors, blind spots and provenance you can measure and explain—not simply the device with the highest advertised specification.
