LiDAR Reveals 1.5 Miles of Hidden Roads Near Machu Picchu—But Their Age Is Not Yet Proven

A Polish-Peruvian archaeological team has mapped about 1.5 miles of previously undocumented roads beneath dense cloud-forest vegetation near the Mandor Wall, across the Urubamba River from Machu Picchu. Airborne or drone-mounted LiDAR exposed the routes, along with terraces and platforms that were absent from earlier maps.

The discovery does not mean a new road suddenly appeared or that every segment has been proven Inca. It expands the known infrastructure around Machu Picchu and gives archaeologists a preliminary map that still needs excavation, field verification and dating.

What was discovered near Machu Picchu?

The mapped routes lie near the Mandor Wall on the riverbank opposite Machu Picchu’s citadel. Taken together, the traces extend for about 1.5 miles, according to 2026 reports attributed to the University of Warsaw Center for Andean Studies. They run toward terraces and raised platforms that had not been documented in the earlier picture of the complex.

One section is especially distinctive: a zigzag or switchback segment measuring about three-quarters of a mile. On steep Andean slopes, that arrangement is characteristic of roads built to control gradient rather than climb directly uphill. The form supports an Inca-style interpretation, but it cannot by itself establish when the road was built or who used every part of it.

The routes are in rugged forest at nearly 8,000 feet elevation, according to CRBC News and Popular Mechanics coverage. Their position across the Urubamba River broadens the geographic scope of Machu Picchu beyond the familiar mountaintop structures.

How LiDAR exposed roads hidden by jungle

The team did not begin by stripping the forest from the mountainside. It used LiDAR, a surveying system that measures the ground with laser pulses and can reveal terrain beneath vegetation.

  1. Laser scanning: An aircraft or drone sends hundreds of thousands of pulses toward the forest floor.
  2. Vegetation filtering: Some pulses pass through gaps between leaves and branches and return from the soil, stonework or other solid surfaces.
  3. Terrain modeling: Software separates vegetation returns from ground returns and builds a digital elevation model with the canopy removed.
  4. Archaeological interpretation: Linear rises, retaining walls, terraces and platforms become visible in the model and can be mapped for later inspection on foot.

That process is why the roads seemed to “appear.” The physical routes remained in place; a new view of the ground made their traces detectable without immediate, large-scale clearing.

How the new routes compare with known Machu Picchu infrastructure

Feature Newly mapped routes Wider Machu Picchu network
Detection and documentation LiDAR-based preliminary mapping beneath dense forest Previously documented infrastructure, including routes identified through ground investigation
Setting Mandor Wall area across the Urubamba River from the citadel The broader protected landscape surrounding Machu Picchu
Engineering form Includes a roughly 0.75-mile zigzag or switchback section Roads and paths linking established sites in varied terrain
Associated features Terraces and platforms not shown in the earlier complex map More than 60 archaeological monuments already linked by the wider park road network
Evidence status Mapped traces awaiting ground-truthing, excavation and dating Infrastructure supported by longer-established archaeological documentation

Are the roads really Inca?

The safest answer is that they are consistent with Inca engineering, not yet conclusively dated as Inca construction. Switchbacks on steep slopes, the relationship to terraces and platforms, and the location within the Machu Picchu landscape all make an Inca-era explanation plausible.

Style is not a calendar. Earlier or later builders could have reused, modified or extended a route, and a road that served a local agricultural settlement might not have been part of the principal imperial road system. The available reports do not provide confirmed construction dates, a complete route geometry or proof that every mapped segment joined the main Inca network.

Why the discovery changes the Machu Picchu story

Machu Picchu is often pictured as an isolated ceremonial and residential compound on a dramatic ridge. The newly detected routes support a different working model: the citadel may have functioned as the center of a connected territory containing roads, agricultural terraces, platforms and satellite sites on both sides of the Urubamba.

This is an expansion of the map, not yet a final reconstruction of how the settlement operated. The roads could show movement between farming areas, platforms and other outlying facilities, but their precise functions will depend on what archaeologists find on the ground.

“This discovery complements and significantly revises hypotheses regarding the functioning of the entire complex,” said Mariusz Ziółkowski, director of the Center for Andean Studies at the University of Warsaw, in a CRBC News report published September 4, 2026.

Why officials are withholding the location

The research team and Peruvian authorities are not releasing precise coordinates. Dense forest and steep terrain make unauthorized exploration difficult, but publicizing an exact location could still encourage looting, uncontrolled visits or damage to fragile walls and platforms.

Withholding coordinates also gives investigators time to establish safe access, record the features systematically and decide where limited clearing is justified. The policy does not imply that the routes are unimportant; it is a preservation measure while the evidence remains preliminary.

What archaeologists will do next

  1. Ground-truth the LiDAR traces: Teams will visit selected points to confirm that linear features are roads or built edges rather than natural formations.
  2. Clear targeted areas: Small, controlled clearings can expose construction details while limiting damage to the forest and archaeological remains.
  3. Excavate representative sections: Trenches may reveal paving, retaining walls, drainage, construction layers and evidence of later repairs.
  4. Document platforms and terraces: Their dimensions and spatial relationships can help determine whether they were agricultural, residential, ceremonial or logistical.
  5. Obtain dates: Soil sequences, charcoal and other suitable material may be tested with radiometric or related dating methods.

Those results could strengthen the Inca interpretation, show that some sections are older or newer than expected, or demonstrate that the mapped network combined imperial roads with local farm routes.

What remains unknown

  • The secure construction date of the roads.
  • The full geometry of the network beyond the LiDAR-mapped traces.
  • Whether every segment connected to the principal Inca road system.
  • The original function of each terrace and platform.
  • How the routes related to traffic, farming and settlement on the opposite bank of the Urubamba.

For now, the strongest conclusion is geographical: Machu Picchu’s archaeological landscape extends farther than earlier maps showed. The roads have been detected, not excavated, and their final place in Inca history will depend on the field evidence still to come.
