LibreOffice and Microsoft 365 at a glance
| Need | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| No recurring software cost | LibreOffice | It has no license fee and can be installed on supported computers. |
| Working without internet access | LibreOffice | The suite is installed locally and is designed for desktop use. |
| Live coauthoring | Microsoft 365 | OneDrive or SharePoint links, presence indicators, automatic saving and version history form a single workflow. |
| Linux desktop | LibreOffice | It has a native Linux release; Microsoft 365’s main strength is its Windows, macOS, browser and mobile ecosystem. |
| Browser and phone continuity | Microsoft 365 | Files can be reached through web, Android and iOS experiences alongside desktop apps. |
| Simple documents and spreadsheets | Either | Both cover writing, calculations and presentations; the deciding factors are cost, file exchange and collaboration. |
| Complex files exchanged with Microsoft users | Microsoft 365 | Using the same application family reduces conversion surprises, especially for advanced layouts, macros, fonts and complex spreadsheets. |
LibreOffice is backed by The Document Foundation and includes Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Math and Base. Microsoft 365 is a subscription service built around Word, Excel and PowerPoint, with storage and continuing feature updates included in the plan. The practical distinction is not that one suite can create documents and the other cannot; it is where the files live, how people work together and how much compatibility risk you can accept.
What you pay: free software versus a subscription
LibreOffice costs nothing to license
LibreOffice can be downloaded and used without a license fee. There is no monthly or annual charge attached to the desktop suite, and its behavior is not tied to maintaining a subscription. That makes it attractive for a personal computer, a household with several machines, a school lab or a Linux workstation where recurring software costs are undesirable.

- Classic Office Apps | Includes classic desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote for creating documents, spreadsheets, and presentations with ease.
- Install on a Single Device | Install classic desktop Office Apps for use on a single Windows laptop, Windows desktop, MacBook, or iMac.
- Ideal for One Person | With a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office 2024, you can create, organize, and get things done.
- Consider Upgrading to Microsoft 365 | Get premium benefits with a Microsoft 365 subscription, including ongoing updates, advanced security, and access to premium versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and more, plus 1TB cloud storage per person and multi-device support for Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Android.
“Free” here describes the software license, not every possible cost around it. You still need a compatible computer, storage for your files and, if you choose to synchronize or share files through a separate service, that service may have its own terms. LibreOffice itself does not bundle a cloud-storage allowance.
Microsoft 365 Personal and Family pricing
The Microsoft Store pricing cited for 2026 lists Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year. Personal includes 1 TB of OneDrive storage. Microsoft 365 Family is listed at $12.99 per month or $129.99 per year, for one to six people, with 2 TB of shared storage.
| Plan | Monthly price | Annual price | People covered | Storage stated in the listing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Personal | $9.99 | $99.99 | One person | 1 TB of OneDrive storage |
| Microsoft 365 Family | $12.99 | $129.99 | One to six people | 2 TB shared storage |
| LibreOffice | No license fee | No license fee | Not subscription-limited | No bundled cloud allowance stated |
These are US Microsoft Store figures accessed in 2026. Taxes, currency conversion, regional pricing, promotions and plan terms can change, so check the price shown for your country before subscribing. The annual options cost less than paying twelve monthly instalments at those listed rates, but they are still recurring subscriptions rather than perpetual licenses.

Microsoft 365’s value is not only the applications. A household that would otherwise buy separate cloud storage, use browser editing and coordinate documents with several people may use the included storage and collaboration features every week. A single user who mainly writes local documents and rarely shares them may gain little from those services and may prefer LibreOffice’s zero-license-cost model.
Writer versus Word: everyday documents
Writer and Word both handle letters, reports, resumes, tables, images, headers, footers and exported PDFs. For a local document that stays on one computer, either is normally sufficient. Differences become visible when a document uses a particular template, typeface, field code, add-in, citation workflow or carefully tuned page layout.

- [Ideal for One Person] — With a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office Home & Business 2024, you can create, organize, and get things done.
- [Classic Office Apps] — Includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote.
- [Desktop Only & Customer Support] — To install and use on one PC or Mac, on desktop only. Microsoft 365 has your back with readily available technical support through chat or phone.
Choose Writer when local control matters
- You want a full desktop word processor without a subscription.
- Your computer runs Linux, or you want the same free suite across Windows, macOS and Linux.
- You mostly create standard text documents and can deliver them as PDF or inspect an exported DOCX.
- You need to continue working when an account or internet connection is unavailable.
Choose Word when shared editing or template fidelity matters
- Several people edit the same document at the same time.
- Your workplace distributes Word templates or expects Word-specific features.
- You need the browser and phone versions to pick up the same file without manual transfers.
- You want automatic saving and a cloud history of earlier versions.
A sensible test is to create one representative document rather than a blank page. Include your usual heading styles, tables, images, page breaks, footnotes and any custom fonts. Open the result in the application that will be used for final delivery. A document that looks perfect in a simple test can still change when it contains a complex template.
Calc versus Excel: spreadsheets and data
Calc and Excel both cover formulas, sorting, filtering, charts, worksheets and common business calculations. For household budgets, lists, schedules and straightforward formulas, LibreOffice can be entirely adequate. Excel is the safer choice when colleagues already use Excel-specific workbooks, when a workbook contains sophisticated automation or when you need cloud coauthoring.

Where Calc is a strong everyday choice
- Personal budgets and expense tracking.
- Lists, inventories and simple planning sheets.
- Offline analysis on a Windows, macOS or Linux desktop.
- Workbooks that use ordinary formulas and uncomplicated charts.
Where Excel reduces friction
- Workbooks are exchanged repeatedly with Microsoft 365 users.
- The file uses macros, advanced layouts, specialized fonts or complex formulas.
- Multiple people need to edit while seeing each other’s changes.
- The workbook must remain synchronized across desktop, browser and mobile devices.
Do not judge compatibility by whether a file opens. Check calculated values, named ranges, chart labels, print areas, page breaks and conditional formatting after conversion. If the spreadsheet drives a financial, legal or operational decision, have the person responsible for the final output open and verify it in the delivery application.
Impress versus PowerPoint: presentations
Impress and PowerPoint can build slide decks with text, images, charts, transitions and speaker notes. A presentation with common layouts generally transfers well enough for editing. Brand templates, embedded media, unusual fonts, animation timing and complex diagrams are more sensitive to the application used to create them.
LibreOffice Impress makes sense when
- You create presentations independently and want to avoid a subscription.
- Your final delivery is a PDF or a deck that you can inspect on the presentation computer.
- You work on Linux or need a local application that remains available offline.
PowerPoint makes sense when
- A team edits the same deck during planning or review.
- The recipient expects a PowerPoint file and uses Microsoft templates or media.
- You need the deck available through browser and mobile applications with cloud synchronization.
For a high-stakes presentation, render several representative slides before sending the deck: a title slide, a dense text slide, a chart, a slide with images and one containing transitions or embedded media. Look for shifted text, substituted fonts, altered crop areas and missing effects.

File compatibility: DOCX, XLSX and PPTX are supported, not guaranteed identical
LibreOffice can open and save Microsoft Office formats, including the Office Open XML formats used by DOCX, XLSX and PPTX. That makes exchange practical for many everyday files. It does not make the two applications identical rendering engines.
Compatibility risk rises with:
- Advanced page layouts, section behavior and template-specific styles.
- Macros or automation written for one application’s object model.
- Fonts that are not installed on both computers.
- Complex spreadsheets, specialized formulas, charts and print settings.
- Presentations with unusual animations, transitions or embedded media.
A safe exchange procedure
- Keep an editable master. Save the working copy in the format native to the application where you do most editing.
- Export a delivery copy. Use DOCX, XLSX or PPTX when the recipient needs an editable Microsoft-format file; use PDF when visual appearance matters more than editing.
- Reopen the exported file. Check it in the application the recipient will use, not only in the program that created it.
- Compare critical content. Verify page breaks, formulas, totals, charts, fonts, images and speaker notes.
- Tell the recipient what to expect. If a file contains macros, unusual fonts or advanced layout, identify that risk before they edit it.
For a one-time handoff, this verification may be enough to make LibreOffice the economical choice. For a long-running team exchange in which the same complex files circulate every day, standardizing on Microsoft 365 usually removes more friction.
Collaboration: the clearest difference between the suites
How Microsoft 365 coauthoring works
- Save the document in OneDrive or SharePoint.
- Use the file’s Share command and set the recipients’ permission, such as Can edit.
- Send a link instead of attaching repeated copies.
- Open the link in the desktop or web application and edit together.
- Use presence indicators to see other participants and rely on automatic saving and version history to recover earlier states.
Microsoft Support describes this link-based model as a way to work with people who do not have the desktop application: recipients can use the shared document experience rather than passing attachments back and forth. The combination of storage, permissions, simultaneous editing and history is the reason Microsoft 365 is the stronger default for teams, families planning together and clients reviewing a document remotely.
What LibreOffice sharing is better suited to
LibreOffice includes sharing and review tools, but the Writer, Impress and Draw guidance describes a one-editor-at-a-time behavior for shared documents. That can work for a controlled handoff: one person edits, saves, closes or yields the file, and the next person reviews it. It is not the same experience as several cursors editing a cloud document at once.
You can still collaborate around LibreOffice by exchanging files, using comments and tracked changes, placing documents in a separately managed shared folder or delivering PDFs for review. Those methods require more coordination and make it easier for conflicting copies to appear. If simultaneous editing is a central requirement, Microsoft 365 has the more complete built-in workflow.

Offline use, operating systems and device access
LibreOffice’s desktop and Linux advantage
The Document Foundation lists LibreOffice support for Windows 10 and 11, macOS 11 or later, and Linux systems using kernel 4.18 or later. It is a native desktop download rather than a browser-only service. This matters when you work on Linux, travel with limited connectivity or want your documents to remain on a local machine unless you deliberately copy them elsewhere.
Microsoft 365’s multi-device advantage
Microsoft 365 spans desktop applications, browser experiences and Android and iOS access. OneDrive synchronization lets the same files follow you between those surfaces. The trade-off is a subscription account and a workflow built around Microsoft’s cloud services. Browser and mobile access are especially useful when you move between a work computer, a personal laptop and a phone.
Ask where your files must be available before choosing. A Linux-only user who needs a local editor has an uncomplicated LibreOffice decision. A household that alternates between Windows, a Mac, a tablet and a phone gains more from Microsoft 365’s continuity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Updates, storage and control
Microsoft 365 subscriptions include continuing feature updates, premium applications and the stated OneDrive storage. You receive a service that evolves without buying a new major desktop release, but changes to features, sign-in requirements or interfaces are part of subscription ownership.
Recommended Free Tools
LibreOffice is installed software. You choose when to download and apply a release, and the suite’s behavior is not dependent on keeping a subscription active. That gives you more control over change and avoids a recurring bill, while storage synchronization, browser editing and real-time collaboration must be arranged separately if you need them.
Best Value
- Create, edit and style DOCUMENTS, SPREADSHEETS & PRESENTATIONS – all the features that you need to get work done
- Included PDF functions to FILL & SIGN forms, ANNOTATE and password PROTECT your PDF documents
- Compatibility with the most popular file formats - OPEN, EDIT & CREATE new and existing documents
- Manage all your email accounts and efficiently schedule with the inlcuded MAIL & CALENDAR apps
- Lifetime License for 1 Windows PC or Laptop
For sensitive documents, decide whether convenience or local custody is more important. LibreOffice makes a local-first workflow straightforward. Microsoft 365 makes sharing, recovery and access from multiple devices straightforward. Neither choice eliminates the need to set sensible folder permissions, backups and account security.
Which suite is better for common everyday scenarios?
| Scenario | Recommendation | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Student writing assignments on a Linux laptop | LibreOffice | It is free, native to Linux and suitable for ordinary documents; export to the requested format and inspect it. |
| Family sharing budgets and schedules across phones and laptops | Microsoft 365 Family | The plan covers one to six people and includes 2 TB of shared storage, while links and coauthoring reduce duplicate files. |
| Solo writer who rarely sends editable files | LibreOffice | There is no subscription cost and local editing covers the main task. |
| Small team editing proposals together | Microsoft 365 | OneDrive or SharePoint, presence indicators, automatic saving and version history are integrated. |
| Consultant exchanging complex spreadsheets with an established Microsoft team | Microsoft 365 | Using the same application family lowers compatibility risk and avoids repeated conversion checks. |
| Organization requiring a one-time license on one computer | Office Home 2024 | It is a separate perpetual-license option that includes Word, Excel and PowerPoint for one PC or Mac. |
Office Home 2024: the middle path
Microsoft Office Home 2024 is a relevant alternative for someone who wants Word, Excel and PowerPoint on one PC or Mac without a Microsoft 365 subscription. Microsoft describes individual and family Office suites as one-time purchases that include those applications for a single computer.
This option changes the trade-off rather than combining every advantage. You avoid recurring payments, but you do not get the full Microsoft 365 subscription model of included OneDrive capacity, multi-device entitlement and continuing subscription features. Confirm the edition, included applications, device limit and regional price at purchase; do not assume a one-time license includes the same services as Microsoft 365.
A practical decision checklist
Choose LibreOffice if most of these statements describe you:
- I need a free office suite with no license fee.
- I work primarily on one desktop or laptop.
- I need Linux support or a local-first workflow.
- I can verify DOCX, XLSX or PPTX files before delivering them.
- I do not need several people editing simultaneously.
Choose Microsoft 365 if most of these statements describe you:
- I want files available in desktop, browser and mobile contexts.
- I collaborate live with people who already use Microsoft applications.
- I need OneDrive storage, link sharing, automatic saving and version history.
- I exchange complex templates, spreadsheets or presentations frequently.
- I prefer continuing feature updates to managing installed versions myself.
Consider Office Home 2024 when you want Word, Excel and PowerPoint on one PC or Mac, do not want a subscription and can live without the broader Microsoft 365 storage and collaboration package.
Migration tips and common failure points
Moving from Microsoft 365 to LibreOffice
- Download and install LibreOffice for your operating system.
- Copy important files locally before changing your normal workflow.
- Open representative DOCX, XLSX and PPTX files and record any layout, formula or font changes.
- Replace incompatible macros or application-specific features before committing to the switch.
- Agree on a delivery format with people who still use Microsoft applications; PDF may be safer for visual documents.
Moving from LibreOffice to Microsoft 365
- Choose Personal or Family based on the number of people and storage you need.
- Sign in, install the desktop applications if required, and place active files in OneDrive.
- Share links with the correct permission instead of emailing multiple attachments.
- Open older files in Word, Excel or PowerPoint and verify formulas, pagination, charts and fonts.
- Keep an archive of the original LibreOffice files until the new versions have been checked.
If a file looks wrong after conversion
- Install the same fonts on both systems or replace them with common alternatives.
- Check whether a macro or specialized formula depends on the original application.
- Inspect print settings and page breaks separately from the on-screen view.
- Save a new copy rather than overwriting the original while troubleshooting.
- For a final handoff, export a PDF and compare it with the editable version.
Final verdict
LibreOffice is the better everyday suite for a cost-conscious, offline-first user who wants a capable desktop application on Windows, macOS or Linux without license fees. Microsoft 365 is better for people whose everyday work includes cloud storage, browser and mobile access, live coauthoring, automatic saving and frequent exchange of complex Microsoft-format files. If you want Microsoft applications but reject a subscription, Office Home 2024 supplies a one-time-purchase route for Word, Excel and PowerPoint on one PC or Mac.
Make the decision around your real workflow: where files are stored, who edits them, which devices you use and how much conversion checking you can tolerate. Those constraints matter more than the name on the application window.
