Keep an OpenDocument (ODF) master for editing in LibreOffice, export an Office-format copy for recipients, review Writer’s Compatibility options, treat VBA preservation and execution as separate choices, and open important exports in Microsoft Office before delivery.
Choose the right file format for each LibreOffice module
LibreOffice can open and save Microsoft Office Open XML files, but its native OpenDocument formats remain the safest working files when the document will continue to be edited in LibreOffice. Microsoft identifies Open XML as the default format in supported Office versions and recommends it unless there is a specific reason to use another format. The practical workflow is therefore two-file: preserve an ODF master, then save a delivery copy in the format your recipients use.

| LibreOffice module | Recommended Office-compatible default | Typical extension | Use the ODF master for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Writer | Word 2007–365 | .docx | Continued LibreOffice editing and maximum feature retention |
| Calc | Excel 2007–365 | .xlsx | Maintaining formulas, sheets and source data in LibreOffice |
| Impress | PowerPoint 2007–365 | .pptx | Building and revising the presentation before distribution |
The selected type becomes the default for future saves in that module. Save As still lets you choose a different format for an individual file, so setting an Office default does not remove the ability to create an ODT, ODS or ODP when that is the better choice.

Set DOCX, XLSX and PPTX as the defaults
LibreOffice stores the default format setting separately for Writer, Calc and Impress. Configure each application rather than assuming one change applies to the whole suite.
#1 Best Overall
- Classic Office Apps | Includes classic desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote for creating documents, spreadsheets, and presentations with ease.
- Install on a Single Device | Install classic desktop Office Apps for use on a single Windows laptop, Windows desktop, MacBook, or iMac.
- Ideal for One Person | With a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office 2024, you can create, organize, and get things done.

- Open the LibreOffice application you want to configure.
- Open Preferences on macOS, or Tools > Options on Windows and Linux.
- Expand Load/Save, then select General.
- Under Document type, select the module’s document category (text, spreadsheet or presentation).
- In Always save as, choose the corresponding Microsoft 2007–365 format.
- Select OK, then repeat the procedure in the other modules.
For a Writer document, choose Word 2007–365 (.docx); for Calc, choose Excel 2007–365 (.xlsx); for Impress, choose PowerPoint 2007–365 (.pptx). The exact wording can vary slightly by LibreOffice release and operating system, but the Load/Save > General location is the controlling setting.
Changing the default does not convert existing files. Open an ODT, ODS or ODP and use File > Save As if you need an Office-format copy. When prompted about using a format that may not preserve every feature, confirm the Microsoft format for the copy and retain the original ODF file.
Use Writer’s Compatibility settings to reduce layout drift
Word documents are laid out with different defaults and rendering assumptions. In Writer, open the document’s Format > Page Style or the relevant document properties area and review the Compatibility page (the exact navigation can differ by release). These options adjust how Writer handles details that commonly move when a DOCX file is opened in Word.

Paragraph and table spacing
Enable the Word-compatible behavior for paragraph and table spacing when the document is designed to match an existing Word template. Small differences in spacing before or after paragraphs can push a heading, table row or signature onto another page even when the text is identical.
Spacing at the start of a page
Review the option governing spacing at the top of a page. A paragraph’s leading space may be treated differently at a page break in Word and Writer; matching the Word behavior prevents headings or table content from appearing lower or higher after conversion.
Font metrics for text grids and Asian text
If the document uses a text grid, East Asian typography or tightly aligned forms, review the compatibility setting for font metrics. Writer can use different character-width calculations from Word. Matching the intended metrics is particularly important for forms, labels, government templates and documents whose lines must align vertically.

Line-height behavior
Check the line-height compatibility choice when a DOCX file shows changed pagination or uneven vertical rhythm. Line-height rules affect every paragraph, so a small difference can accumulate across a long report. Make the change on a copy first, then inspect headings, footnotes, tables and page breaks.
Recommended Free Tools
Some compatibility choices are document-specific rather than global. An imported DOCX can enable flags automatically because the file carries Word-oriented settings. Consequently, two documents opened on the same computer may paginate differently. Save the document after reviewing the options so the chosen behavior travels with that file.
Handle VBA macros deliberately
LibreOffice’s VBA controls address two different needs: preserving Microsoft Basic source code and attempting to run that code. Do not treat them as one compatibility switch.

Preserve unchanged VBA source
- Open Preferences/Tools > Options > Load/Save > VBA Properties.
- Select Save original Basic code when the goal is to carry unchanged Microsoft VBA through a LibreOffice save.
- Save a copy in DOCX, XLSX or PPTX and keep the original file as a rollback point.
This setting is for round-trip preservation. It does not make the macro executable in LibreOffice, nor does it certify that the code will behave the same way in Excel, Word or PowerPoint.
Enable executable code only when necessary
Select Executable code only when you intentionally need LibreOffice to attempt limited VBA execution. LibreOffice documents that VBA support is incomplete; code may need edits and missing behavior may have to be replaced with LibreOffice Basic objects, statements and functions. Macro security settings, references to Windows-only components, ActiveX controls, external files and application-specific object models can all affect the result.

- For a workflow that must run inside LibreOffice, test the macro on a disposable copy and expect code changes.
- For safety, do not enable executable macros merely to make a file look compatible; execution is a separate operational requirement.
Keep an ODF master and export a controlled delivery copy
Use the ODF file as the authoritative working document, especially when it contains complex styles, fields, charts or repeated edits. Before sending it to an Office user, save a separate DOCX, XLSX or PPTX copy. This prevents an export from replacing the version that retains LibreOffice-native features.
Best Value
- Alternative office suite: Word processor TextMaker, Spreadsheet program PlanMaker, Presentation software Presentations, Automation tool BasicMaker
- Licensed for 5 users / household or 1 user / organization, perpetual lifetime license for Windows, Mac and Linux
- User interface with modern ribbons or classical menus
- Compatible with all modern Microsoft Office documents including DOCX, XLSX, PPTX
- The complete office suite can be installed on a USB flash and used without installation
- Finish editing and update fields, tables of contents, formulas and charts in the ODF master.
- Use File > Save As and select the recipient’s Office format.
- Accept the format warning for the delivery copy.
- Close and reopen the exported copy in LibreOffice to catch an immediate conversion warning or visible change.
- When fidelity matters, open that same copy in Microsoft Office and inspect it there before sending.
Use a clear naming convention such as a master filename ending in .odt, .ods or .odp, and a separate delivery filename ending in .docx, .xlsx or .pptx. Never overwrite the master during repeated export cycles.
Know where conversion problems are most likely
There is no universal compatibility percentage. Results depend on the document’s features, the LibreOffice release, installed fonts and the Microsoft Office version opening the file. LibreOffice identifies specific risk areas that deserve a final Office check.
| File type | Features that may change during conversion | What to inspect in Office |
|---|---|---|
| DOCX | Word AutoShapes, tracked revisions, OLE objects, tables and multi-column layouts | Page breaks, object placement, revision display, table widths and column flow |
| XLSX | Pivot tables, newer chart types, conditional formatting and some formulas | Formula results, pivot refresh behavior, chart appearance, rule ranges and cell formatting |
| PPTX | Spacing, grouped objects and multimedia | Text overflow, alignment, group positions, audio/video playback and slide timing |
Inspect the exported file in the application that your recipient will use, not only in LibreOffice. A file can appear correct after reopening in LibreOffice while still shifting in Word, Excel or PowerPoint because the final renderer uses different layout engines, fonts or feature implementations.
Troubleshoot common compatibility symptoms
The file keeps saving as ODT, ODS or ODP
- Confirm that you changed the correct module and document category under Load/Save > General.
- Check the file extension in the Save dialog; an existing file may retain its original format until you use Save As.
- Verify that you selected the Microsoft 2007–365 entry, not an older binary Office format.
Pages, tables or headings move in Word
- Open Writer’s Compatibility page and review paragraph/table spacing, page-start spacing, font metrics and line-height behavior.
- Confirm that the fonts used in the document are available on the Office computer; substitute fonts can change line wrapping.
- Inspect tables, columns, AutoShapes and OLE objects first, because they are named conversion-risk areas.
An XLSX looks different or calculates unexpectedly
- Open it in Excel and check formulas, conditional-formatting ranges, pivot tables and chart types.
- Compare key results with the ODS master before distributing the workbook.
- Avoid assuming that a visible value proves every underlying formula or pivot operation converted identically.
A PPTX has overlapping or missing content
- Review text spacing and overflow on every slide.
- Ungrouped or grouped objects can move differently, so inspect diagrams and aligned shapes at high zoom.
- Test multimedia on the target computer; a successful import does not guarantee playback.
Macros are present but do not run
- Check whether Save original Basic code was selected for preservation.
- Remember that preservation does not equal execution.
- If LibreOffice must run the macro, enable executable code only for a controlled test and plan for edits because VBA support is incomplete.
Update LibreOffice before exporting important files
LibreOffice 26.8.1, published on October 2, 2026, lists compatibility fixes for DOCX table-of-contents hyperlinks, text alignment and line spacing; XLSX drawing objects and database ranges; and PPTX files that previously could close Impress. Staying current does not eliminate conversion differences, but it can remove defects already addressed by the project. Apply updates before a major export cycle, then repeat the Office-side inspection after updating.
Pick a workflow based on the recipient and document complexity
| Workflow | Best fit | Round-trip fidelity | Macro approach | Validation burden |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ODF only | Everyone edits in LibreOffice or another ODF-capable editor | Highest within the ODF workflow | Use LibreOffice-native automation | Low when all editors use the same environment |
| ODF master plus Office export | LibreOffice author sends a finished copy to Office users | Strong for simple text and ordinary sheets; variable for complex layouts | Preserve source when needed; test execution separately | Office check required for important files |
| Office format throughout | Several people alternate between LibreOffice and Microsoft Office | Depends on features and repeated conversions | Expect VBA inspection and possible edits | High; test after significant edits |
For simple letters, basic spreadsheets and conventional slide decks, the Office defaults usually remove an avoidable “wrong format” step. For complex publishing layouts, advanced charts, pivot-heavy workbooks, multimedia presentations or macro-driven files, the master-and-export workflow is safer because it preserves a known-good source and makes validation explicit.
