The New York Liberty enter the 2026 WNBA semifinals with a clear advantage in recent deep-playoff continuity: this is their third semifinal appearance in four years, according to theScore. They will face an Atlanta Dream team that also advanced on October 1—and that beat New York 95–84 on September 21. Experience gives the Liberty a useful foundation, but it does not decide the series.
How New York and Atlanta reached the semifinals
New York advanced by sweeping Minnesota, according to the Liberty’s official news listing, which dates the advancement to October 1, 2026. Atlanta also secured its place that day; the Dream’s official news page reported the team’s advance after a win in Washington.

The two teams therefore arrive with different routes into the same round. The available official listings establish that both advanced on October 1, but do not provide a semifinal schedule. Dates, venues, results and player availability should be checked against current official updates.
What the Liberty’s playoff experience means
Repeated recent trips to the semifinals
TheScore characterizes this as New York’s third semifinal appearance in four years. That frequency gives the Liberty recent exposure to the demands of advancing through the postseason. A returning star core
New York’s 2026 game notes identify Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones and Sabrina Ionescu as a returning All-WNBA core. A familiar group can bring continuity into a high-pressure series, but that is not the same as showing that every Liberty player has more playoff experience than every Dream player. The team-level semifinal record and the roster’s returning stars support a continuity argument—not a player-by-player comparison.
Atlanta brings its own playoff history
The Dream are not without franchise postseason accomplishments. The WNBA’s playoff-history listing records Atlanta as a Finals runner-up in 2010, 2011 and 2013, while New York won the championship in 2024. Those records describe franchise history, not the postseason experience of the players on either team’s current roster.

Atlanta’s recent win is relevant context, not a series verdict
Atlanta beat New York 95–84 on September 21, according to the official WNBA game summary. It is a recent example of the Dream beating the Liberty, but one result cannot establish the full season-series picture or predict what will happen in the semifinals.

What the experience storyline can—and cannot—tell fans
New York’s repeated recent semifinal appearances and returning star core make playoff continuity a reasonable focus for this matchup. Atlanta’s advancement and its own franchise Finals history add important context. The available information does not establish a player-by-player postseason comparison, matchup assignments, defensive advantages or current injuries; those should not be inferred from the teams’ histories.
