Short answer: Neither LG nor Samsung can be named a universal winner for reliability, features, and service. The strongest current U.S. evidence points in different directions: J.D. Power’s 2026 satisfaction study scores Samsung above LG in French-door and side-by-side refrigerators, while reliability evidence is configuration-specific and does not provide a complete, like-for-like Samsung-versus-LG comparison. Consumer Reports identifies recurring icemaker and dispenser problems across refrigerators and an elevated compressor-problem pattern for several LG configurations.
Choose by exact model, layout, dimensions, ice system, warranty language, and authorized service coverage in your ZIP code. Treat brand-level scores as context, not a promise about the refrigerator you will buy.

What the latest U.S. evidence actually measures
“Reliability,” “owner satisfaction,” and “service quality” are different outcomes. A refrigerator can satisfy owners because it is quiet and easy to organize while still having a higher repair rate. Conversely, a model can have a good reliability record but receive lower satisfaction because owners dislike its controls or storage layout. The studies below should therefore be read separately rather than combined into one winner.

| J.D. Power, 2026 Appliance Satisfaction Study | 28,411 evaluations of appliances bought in the prior 12 months; fielded April 2025–April 2026 | 722 for French-door; 742 for side-by-side | 733 for French-door; 750 for side-by-side | Satisfaction scores, not failure rates or expected life |
Consumer Reports’ 2026 report says icemakers and water/ice dispensers are among the most commonly reported refrigerator problems. Its 30% estimate is useful for understanding the trade-off of adding an icemaker, but it should not be presented as the probability that a particular LG or Samsung refrigerator will fail.

J.D. Power’s reliability study gives LG refrigerator PP100 figures but does not publish a comparable Samsung refrigerator figure in the release summary. That omission prevents a defensible claim that one brand is more reliable than the other from that release alone. The 2026 J.D. Power satisfaction scores do show Samsung ahead of LG in both listed configurations, but satisfaction is a different measurement.
“With that increased level of complexity, however, comes a greater potential for issues, which puts a spotlight on reliability as a critical factor in the customer experience and a key driver of brand loyalty.” — Michael Taylor, senior managing director of retail practice at J.D. Power
Why reliability depends on configuration and model
A brand label covers several refrigerator architectures. French-door, side-by-side, bottom-freezer, standard-depth, counter-depth, single-ice-maker, dual-ice-maker, and dispenser models place different demands on compressors, fans, valves, sensors, wiring, and door seals. Comparing an uncomplicated bottom-freezer refrigerator with a connected French-door model that has two ice makers does not isolate the brand’s reliability.
French-door refrigerators
French-door models put the refrigerator compartment at eye level and the freezer below. Their wide upper compartment is convenient for platters, but the design commonly incorporates multiple doors, a center mullion, a water system, and an icemaker. Consumer Reports found poor predicted-reliability and owner-satisfaction ratings for Samsung French-door models in its 2026 survey. It also found that LG French-door models were more likely to experience compressor problems than models from most other brands. Those findings describe survey populations, not every current model.
Side-by-side refrigerators
Side-by-side models keep the freezer and refrigerator vertically adjacent, which makes both compartments easy to reach but limits shelf width. J.D. Power reports 68 PP100 for LG side-by-side refrigerators in its 2025 reliability study. Samsung’s side-by-side reliability PP100 was not included in the release summary, so the figure cannot be used to rank the two brands against each other. In the 2026 satisfaction study, Samsung scored 750 and LG 742 in this segment.
Bottom-freezer refrigerators
Bottom-freezer designs place fresh food above a pull-out freezer and often omit an external dispenser. Consumer Reports’ summary identifies LG bottom-freezer models in its compressor-problem observation, but it does not provide a model-by-model failure rate that can predict the outcome for a specific refrigerator. If reliability is your priority, compare the exact compressor, ice system, and warranty rather than assuming that every bottom-freezer model shares one result.
Compare LG and Samsung models on the features you will use
Brand-level feature lists are misleading because both companies sell basic and highly connected refrigerators. Select one LG model and one Samsung model with similar capacity, depth, layout, and ice arrangement before comparing features.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCapacity, depth, and installation clearance
Start with the opening in your kitchen, not the advertised cubic-foot number. Record the opening’s width, height, and depth; the path through doors and hallways; and the clearance needed to open each refrigerator door or freezer drawer. Counter-depth models reduce cabinet protrusion but usually provide less usable volume than standard-depth versions of similar width. Check the manufacturer’s dimensional drawing for hinge, handle, rear-ventilation, and door-swing clearances. A refrigerator that technically fits the opening can still fail if a wall prevents a door from opening far enough to remove shelves.
Ice maker and dispenser design
Ask whether you need an external water dispenser, an internal dispenser, one ice maker, or two. Every additional valve, tube, fan, sensor, and ice mechanism adds potential service points. Consumer Reports identifies icemakers and water/ice dispensers as common problem areas and estimates that 30% of refrigerators with icemakers in its survey context had a problem by year five. That figure is not a forecast for either brand, but it is a reason to avoid paying for an ice system you will rarely use.
Check where the ice maker is located, how much ice it stores, whether the freezer must remain below a specified temperature, and how the filter is replaced. Confirm the cost and availability of the correct replacement filter for the exact model. Do not assume that a filter number used by one refrigerator fits another model from the same brand.
Storage layout and door features
Measure the containers you actually store: tall bottles, pizza boxes, sheet pans, and gallon jugs. Look for adjustable shelves, full-width drawers, door-bin height, and whether the shelves can be removed without opening both doors completely. LG’s U.S. LRFLC2726S, for example, is listed as a 27-cubic-foot counter-depth French-door refrigerator with a built-in ice maker, smart inverter compressor, and Door Cooling+. Those are model features, not proof that all LG refrigerators offer them or that they improve reliability.

Connected controls and smart functions
Decide what you will actually use: temperature alerts, diagnostics, vacation mode, filter reminders, or remote control. A connected refrigerator requires a compatible app, an account, wireless-network access, and continuing software support. J.D. Power’s 2025 release reports higher average problem rates among connected appliances across the appliance categories it studied. That is a cross-category finding, not a refrigerator-specific LG or Samsung failure rate, so it should be treated as a complexity warning rather than a brand verdict.
Energy information
Compare the EnergyGuide label and the exact model number, not a brand’s general efficiency claim. Annual energy use depends on capacity, ice production, dispenser configuration, temperature settings, and testing assumptions. Keep the label with your purchase records so you can compare the estimated operating cost with a replacement model later.
A step-by-step LG-versus-Samsung comparison
- Define the configuration. Write down French-door, side-by-side, or bottom-freezer; standard-depth or counter-depth; approximate capacity; and whether you need an external dispenser.
- Measure the installation. Record cabinet opening, floor-to-ceiling height, hallway and doorway widths, hinge-side wall clearance, and the space needed to remove packaging and old-appliance doors.
- Choose a feature ceiling. Decide whether you require an icemaker, filtered water, dual ice, a specialty door, Wi-Fi, or a particular drawer. Exclude features that do not solve a real household need.
- Build a two-model shortlist. Select an LG and a Samsung refrigerator with comparable capacity, layout, depth, and ice system. Comparing a premium, connected French-door model with a basic side-by-side model will produce a feature difference, not a brand comparison.
- Read the specification sheets. Verify exterior dimensions, required clearances, shelf and drawer layout, ice storage, water connection, electrical requirements, noise information if provided, and the exact replacement-filter designation.
- Check reliability evidence in context. Use the Consumer Reports configuration observations and J.D. Power PP100 or satisfaction numbers only with their study year, sample, and measure attached. Do not convert a satisfaction score into a failure probability.
- Read the warranty document. Separate parts coverage, labor coverage, sealed-system coverage, and compressor coverage. Record exclusions, registration requirements, and the date from which coverage begins.
- Verify service before paying. Enter your ZIP code in each manufacturer’s authorized-service locator, call to confirm that the exact model is covered, ask how non-warranty labor is billed, and check whether parts for the model are routinely stocked.
- Price the delivered installation. Include delivery, installation, water-line work, old-refrigerator haul-away, taxes, required accessories, and replacement filters. A lower shelf price can disappear after these charges.
- Save your records. Keep the model and serial numbers, invoice, warranty terms, installation photographs, and service contact details. They reduce delays if a sealed-system or ice-maker claim is needed.
Warranty: compressor years are not the same as labor years
Samsung’s U.S. warranty page says that, for most refrigerators, coverage includes one year of parts and labor, five years of parts and labor for the sealed system, and ten years of parts coverage plus five years of labor for the digital inverter compressor. Samsung also states that terms can vary by model. Therefore, a phrase such as “10-year compressor warranty” does not mean ten years of free labor. Read the warranty for the exact model and purchase date.
Recommended Free Tools
Current LG U.S. product pages advertise a promotional extra limited-warranty year on select products. Eligibility depends on conditions such as purchase dates, connecting the refrigerator to the ThinQ app, registration, and the offer’s stated terms. It is a promotion, not a universal LG baseline. Check the exact product page and retain proof that each requirement was completed.
Questions to answer in either warranty
- Does the stated period cover parts, labor, or both?
- Is the compressor covered as a sealed-system component, a digital-inverter component, or under a separate clause?
- Who pays diagnosis, travel, refrigerant, and labor after the initial period?
- Are ice makers, water valves, filters, shelves, and cosmetic parts excluded or limited?
- Does registration or app connection affect eligibility?
- Does coverage transfer if the refrigerator is sold with the home?
Service: make the local check before delivery
The available evidence does not establish a refrigerator-specific national service winner between LG and Samsung. J.D. Power’s 2025 service ranking is an overall appliance-service result, not a refrigerator-only LG-versus-Samsung score, and it does not provide local response times. Your practical outcome depends on the authorized servicer serving your address, the model’s parts pipeline, and who pays labor when a component warranty remains but labor coverage has ended.
ZIP-code service checklist
- Use each manufacturer’s current U.S. authorized-servicer search with your exact ZIP code.
- Ask whether the servicer accepts warranty calls for the specific model number, not just the brand.
- Ask the normal appointment window and whether sealed-system work is performed in the home.
- Ask which labor, travel, diagnostic, refrigerant, and return-visit charges can apply outside the first year.
- Ask whether common ice-maker, valve, control-board, fan, and compressor parts are stocked locally or ordered.
- Confirm how to escalate an unresolved warranty repair and whether the retailer coordinates service.
Retailer delivery matters too. Confirm that the delivery team will remove doors if necessary, connect the water line according to the installation instructions, level the cabinet, test the ice and water systems, and haul away the old unit. Document dents, scratches, leaks, and abnormal noises before the delivery crew leaves.
Which choice fits different priorities?
If satisfaction features and interface matter most
J.D. Power’s 2026 satisfaction results favor Samsung over LG in both listed categories: 733 versus 722 for French-door refrigerators and 750 versus 742 for side-by-side refrigerators. Use that as evidence of reported owner satisfaction during the study period, then confirm that the specific Samsung model fits your kitchen and that its connected or dispenser features are worth the added complexity.

If minimizing complexity matters most
Choose the simplest configuration that meets your storage needs. An internal or no-dispenser design, one ice maker instead of two, and fewer connected functions reduce the number of systems that can require diagnosis. This is a design-principle choice, not evidence that one brand’s basic model will outlast the other brand’s basic model.
If compressor coverage is your main concern
Compare the exact compressor and sealed-system clauses, including labor duration and exclusions. Consumer Reports’ 2026 summary notes a higher likelihood of compressor problems for LG French-door, side-by-side, and bottom-freezer models than for models from most other brands, while J.D. Power’s 2025 release lists LG at 74 PP100 for French-door and 68 PP100 for side-by-side refrigerators. Neither source supplies a complete, current Samsung-versus-LG compressor comparison, so warranty terms and local repair capability deserve extra weight.
If you need a counter-depth refrigerator
Compare usable interior dimensions, not just the headline capacity. LG’s LRFLC2726S is one example of a 27-cubic-foot counter-depth French-door design with a built-in ice maker, smart inverter compressor, and Door Cooling+. Find a Samsung model with comparable depth and capacity, then check door-swing clearance, shelf width, and ice-bin access side by side.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling a satisfaction score a reliability score: Keep the J.D. Power 2026 satisfaction results separate from the 2025 PP100 reliability results.
- Assuming a brand average predicts your unit: Survey findings are configuration- and model-dependent. Record the exact model number.
- Reading “10-year compressor” as ten years of free repairs: Samsung’s stated compressor terms distinguish parts from labor.
- Buying a dispenser by default: Icemakers and water/ice dispensers are common problem areas in Consumer Reports’ 2026 survey context.
- Ignoring installation geometry: Verify hinge clearance, hallway access, leveling, ventilation, and door removal requirements before ordering.
- Assuming a promotion is permanent: LG’s extra limited-warranty year applies only to select products and stated purchase, registration, and app conditions.
- Using the wrong water filter: Match the filter designation to the refrigerator’s exact model and installation manual.
- Relying on a national service reputation: Confirm an authorized servicer, parts access, labor terms, and escalation path for your ZIP code.
What the evidence cannot tell you
No supplied study provides a controlled, same-model LG-versus-Samsung laboratory test, a complete feature table across both product lines, refrigerator-only service response times, or a universal expected lifespan. Prices, inventory, delivery policies, and promotional warranty terms change. The responsible conclusion is therefore conditional: use the published survey numbers to understand risks and satisfaction patterns, then make the purchase decision from model-level specifications, fit, warranty coverage, and local service availability.
