That makes it a compelling specialist display for competitive PC gaming, but the headline refresh rate comes with a real resolution trade-off. OLED strengths—deep blacks, vivid color and sharp motion—are balanced by concerns for desktop use, including text fringing and potential burn-in from prolonged static content.
What the 27GX790B-B offers
LG identifies the 27GX790B-B as a 27-inch OLED gaming monitor with two operating modes: QHD at up to 540Hz and HD at up to 720Hz. The 720Hz mode does not preserve the monitor’s full resolution; it reduces the image to 720p. For most players, 1440p at 540Hz is the more useful balance. The lower-resolution mode is aimed at players who prioritize maximum refresh in games and setups that can make practical use of it.

LG lists a 0.02ms GtG response time, DisplayPort 2.1, VESA ClearMR 21000, DisplayHDR True Black 500, NVIDIA G-SYNC compatibility and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro. These are manufacturer specifications and feature listings, not independent measurements. LG’s US product page has the model’s listed features.
How the picture and motion perform
In its review, RTINGS reports very sharp motion and low input lag in certain gaming picture modes. It also finds the OLED panel delivers deep blacks, bright HDR highlights without haloing and a wide color range. Those benefits make fast games look crisp and high-contrast scenes dramatic.

There are qualifications: RTINGS notes that colors are not as bright as pure white, and flags HDR overbrightening and VRR flicker. These behaviors can affect how a game looks or feels depending on its content, settings and use of variable refresh rate. A high maximum refresh rate does not by itself guarantee that every game or picture mode will look ideal.
RTINGS’ review changelog dated October 5, 2026 records conversion to Test Bench 2.2 and a new Longevity 3.0 test box. That update is not evidence that every older test result was independently repeated.

Using it outside games
The 27GX790B-B can serve as a work monitor, but OLED’s desktop trade-offs deserve attention if you spend long hours with static windows, menus or taskbars. RTINGS warns of possible burn-in with extended static content and notes text fringing, which may be distracting for reading or detailed office work. It also lists USB-C power delivery at just 5W, so USB-C should not be assumed to power a laptop in the way a higher-wattage docking monitor might.

Its matte coating helps reduce reflections from smaller light sources, according to RTINGS, but it may not overcome intense glare. That makes room lighting relevant: a bright, glare-heavy space is a less favorable setting than a controlled room.

- Center of Vision: At 26.5-inches, the X27U is directly in your field of view. Considered a hallmark of eSports tournaments, this is the perfect size to gain an edge over your opponents. The addition of a ZeroFrame design also removes the bezels – giving you have even more visibly over every match and every movement your rivals make.
What reviewers found in everyday use
T3’s reviewer used the monitor for a couple of weeks for both work and gaming, describing vivid OLED color and contrast, smooth gaming and useful ergonomics. The reviewer also found input switching was not always smooth and that the stand pushes the display forward from the rear, which can affect desk placement. They did not feel a need to use the 720Hz, 720p mode in their own play. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a universal result.
Who should buy it?
It makes sense for
- Competitive PC players who value extremely high refresh rates and can drive the games they play at high frame rates.
- Players who want OLED contrast and fast motion while keeping 1440p available at up to 540Hz.
- Buyers willing to choose 720p when pursuing the maximum 720Hz refresh mode.
Look elsewhere if
- You want 4K resolution; this monitor’s stated modes are 1440p at up to 540Hz and 720p at up to 720Hz.
- Your priority is long, static-heavy office use, where text fringing and OLED burn-in risk matter more.
- You need a display that resists intense glare or provides substantial USB-C laptop power.
- You are shopping primarily for value: its launch price does not establish what it costs now.
Price and buying considerations
LG announced a US preorder price of $999.99 on January 6, 2026. That is historical launch context, not a current offer. Check local pricing, stock, model suffix and warranty terms before buying; the price and availability can vary over time and by region. The LG US Newsroom launch announcement records the dated preorder figure.

Verdict
The 27GX790B-B is close to a no-compromise choice for a narrow audience, not a flawless all-purpose monitor. Its 1440p/540Hz mode is the central attraction, with 720Hz available only by stepping down to 720p. If competitive speed and OLED image quality outweigh price, glare handling and desktop-use concerns, it is a compelling specialist display. For mixed productivity, bright rooms or buyers seeking higher resolution, its compromises are harder to justify.
