If your LG TV won’t turn on, start by checking what the standby light is doing, then verify the power connection and outlet. Try the TV’s physical power button to see whether the remote is the problem. A standby light can guide these checks, but it cannot identify a failed internal component on its own.
What does the LG TV standby light tell you?
LG says the standby light at the lower edge of the TV is on while the set is in standby. If it is off, check the power cord and outlet first. However, supported models can let you disable the indicator in settings, so a dark light does not by itself prove the TV has lost power. - Standby light on, screen off: Press the physical power button on the TV. If it starts, investigate the remote.
- Standby light off: Reseat the power connection and test the outlet before suspecting the TV.
- Light flashes and goes out, or you hear sound with a black screen: Do not infer a particular failed part. Persistent power or screen symptoms call for LG support or technician diagnosis.
Six safe checks for an LG TV that will not turn on
1. Check the power cord and connections
Make sure the cord is firmly connected at the wall and, if it is detachable, at the TV. If the TV uses an adapter, check its connections too. For an integrated power cord, check the wall connection. Unplug and reconnect accessible connections before testing again. LG notes that power-cord designs vary by model: LG power-issue troubleshooting.
2. Test the outlet and breaker
Plug a small appliance into the same outlet. If it does not work either, check the home circuit breaker rather than assuming the TV is defective. 3. Use the TV’s physical power button
Find and press the TV’s own power button. LG says it may be beneath the logo or on the back; the position depends on the model. If the TV turns on this way, the issue is more likely to involve the remote or its signal path than the TV’s basic ability to power up. For the model-specific location, check the TV manual or LG support.
4. Check the remote and its batteries
Replace the batteries with the type specified in the remote’s compartment or manual, observing the polarity markings. LG describes checking a remote’s infrared signal with an Android phone camera, but warns that this method may not work with iPhones. A failed remote may need replacement; verify compatibility against your exact TV model rather than assuming one remote works with every LG TV. See LG’s power and remote troubleshooting.

5. Try LG’s power-cycle reset
- Disconnect the TV from power.
- Press and hold the TV’s physical power button for about 10 seconds.
- Reconnect the TV and try turning it on.
LG includes this sequence in its guidance for a TV with no picture or sound. It is a power-cycle reset, not a factory reset, and does not erase the TV’s settings: LG hard-reset guidance.

6. Contact LG or arrange a technician diagnosis
If the TV remains unresponsive after the external checks and power cycle, contact LG support or arrange professional diagnosis. Do not open the TV or attempt internal electrical repairs based on a standby-light symptom. LG recommends contacting customer support to schedule a service visit when the issue persists: LG no-power troubleshooting.

When a dark standby light is only a settings issue
If the TV powers on but its standby indicator stays dark, the light may have been switched off in settings on a supported model. The setting’s location depends on the webOS generation; follow the instructions for the exact model rather than relying on a menu path meant for another year. A factory reset returns settings to their original state and requires access to the TV’s menus. It is not a useful first step if the TV cannot power on or be navigated.
