LG’s departure from the smartphone market has reached its final stage, with the last remaining forms of support for its mobile devices winding down. After years of limited software updates, security patches, repair availability, and customer service following the company’s 2021 exit announcement, LG phone owners are now facing the practical end of the road for official assistance.
For anyone still using an LG handset, this shift affects more than brand loyalty. It raises immediate questions about device security, long-term reliability, data backup, repair options, and when it makes sense to move to a newer phone from another manufacturer.
LG’s mobile division left behind a distinctive legacy, from bold camera features and high-quality audio to experimental designs like modular accessories, dual-screen cases, and rotating displays. Its final support shutdown marks not just the end of service for existing devices, but the closing chapter of one of Android’s most inventive smartphone brands.
What LG’s Final Support Shutdown Means
LG’s final support shutdown marks the end of the company’s remaining responsibilities to its smartphone customers. When LG announced its withdrawal from the mobile phone business in 2021, it kept parts of the support structure alive for existing devices, including promised Android updates for select models, periodic security patches, repair handling in some regions, and customer service resources. With those commitments now winding down, LG phones are effectively moving from “discontinued but supported” to “fully end-of-life.”

For owners, the most immediate change is that future software support should no longer be expected. Devices such as the LG Velvet, LG Wing, LG V60 ThinQ, LG G8 series, and other late-era models may continue to function normally, but they are no longer part of an active update cycle. That means no new Android version upgrades, no routine monthly or quarterly security patches, and no vendor fixes for bugs that appear after carrier or app ecosystem changes. In practical terms, the phone may still make calls, run apps, take photos, and connect to mobile networks, but its operating system will become increasingly dated.
The shutdown also affects repair and service options. Official parts pipelines, authorized repair channels, warranty handling, and direct customer support are being reduced or closed depending on the country and carrier. Batteries, displays, charging ports, camera modules, and back covers may become harder to source through official channels. Independent repair shops may still be able to service common failures, especially on popular models, but availability will depend on remaining parts stock and salvaged components. Over time, even basic repairs may become uneconomical compared with replacing the device.
What changes for LG phone owners
- Security updates end: newly discovered Android vulnerabilities may remain unpatched on LG devices.
- Android upgrades stop: supported models will stay on their last released operating system version.
- Official repairs become limited: service centers may no longer accept LG phones or may lack replacement parts.
- Customer support winds down: help pages, phone support, live chat, and troubleshooting resources may be removed or archived.
- App compatibility may decline: banking, payment, workplace, and authentication apps may eventually require newer Android versions or security patch levels.
The end of support does not mean every LG phone will stop working overnight. Most devices will continue to operate as long as the hardware remains functional and the cellular bands are still supported by local networks. However, risk increases with time. A phone that no longer receives security patches is less suitable for sensitive tasks such as mobile banking, storing work documents, managing passwords, or using two-factor authentication apps. Owners who keep using an LG phone should make regular backups, avoid sideloading unknown apps, keep Google Play system components updated where possible, and consider moving critical accounts to a newer supported device.
This final shutdown also closes the last active chapter of LG’s mobile division. The company had already redirected resources toward businesses such as home appliances, televisions, vehicle components, batteries, displays, and connected-device platforms. For consumers, the practical message is clear: LG phones have become legacy devices. They can still serve as backup handsets, media players, camera devices, or Wi-Fi-only tools, but anyone relying on one as a primary phone should begin planning a replacement with current software support and a clear update policy.
A Brief Timeline of LG’s Smartphone Exit
LG’s departure from smartphones did not happen overnight. It was the result of years of shrinking market share, mounting losses, and intensifying competition from Samsung, Apple, and aggressive Chinese brands. By the late 2010s, LG still had loyal fans, especially in North America, but its mobile division was struggling to turn distinctive hardware ideas into sustainable sales.
The clearest turning point came in April 2021, when LG officially announced that it would close its mobile phone business. The company said it would stop manufacturing and selling smartphones, while honoring existing warranties and continuing software support for selected models for a limited period. At the time, LG positioned the move as a way to focus resources on growth areas such as electric vehicle components, connected devices, smart homes, robotics, artificial intelligence, and business-to-business technologies.
Key milestones in LG’s exit
- Pre-2021: LG’s mobile unit records repeated operating losses despite attention-grabbing devices such as the LG G series, V series, Velvet, and Wing.
- April 2021: LG confirms it will shut down its smartphone business globally, ending development of new phones.
- July 2021: LG completes the wind-down of phone production and sales, with remaining inventory sold through carriers and retailers in some markets.
- 2021-2023: The company continues limited Android version upgrades and security patches for eligible models, including select premium devices.
- 2024-2025: Update frequency declines further as devices age, carrier support narrows, and spare parts availability becomes more limited.
- Final support phase: Remaining software updates, security patches, repair channels, and customer support programs wind down, marking LG’s complete exit from the smartphone ecosystem.
During the transition period, LG attempted to give customers a softer landing than a sudden shutdown would have provided. Some phones received Android 12 or Android 13 updates depending on region, carrier approval, and model eligibility. Devices such as the LG Velvet, LG Wing, and certain V and G series models were among those most likely to receive continued attention, though availability varied widely by country. This uneven rollout reflected one of the long-standing complications of Android support: updates often depend not only on the manufacturer, but also on chipset vendors, mobile carriers, certification processes, and local service policies.

The end of support now closes the remaining gap between LG as a former phone maker and LG as a company focused elsewhere. For owners, that means LG phones are no longer part of an active product roadmap. There are no new models coming, no future platform promises to wait for, and no expanding repair infrastructure behind them. What remains is a finite installed base of devices that may still function well for calls, media, music playback, photography, or secondary use, but without the safety net that comes with an actively supported smartphone brand.
LG’s exit also marked a wider shift in the Android market. At one time, the company was one of the most visible alternatives to Samsung, especially for buyers who wanted expandable storage, headphone jacks, high-quality audio hardware, manual camera controls, or unusual form factors. Once LG left, the mainstream premium Android space became more concentrated, while experimental designs moved toward foldables, gaming phones, and niche enthusiast devices. The final support shutdown is therefore more than an administrative endpoint; it is the last chapter of one of Android’s most inventive, if commercially inconsistent, hardware stories.
Impact on Software Updates, Security, and Repairs
For remaining LG phone owners, the end of support means the practical safety net around these devices is disappearing. Models that were still receiving occasional Android version upgrades or security maintenance will no longer get official firmware updates, carrier-approved patches, or routine bug fixes from LG. Even if a handset still works well for calls, messaging, photos, and basic apps, it is now effectively frozen on its current software build unless a carrier or regional partner has an update already staged.
The biggest concern is security. Android phones rely on regular patches to close vulnerabilities in the operating system, modem firmware, Bluetooth stack, browser components, and vendor-specific drivers. Without those updates, newly discovered flaws may remain open permanently on LG devices. This does not mean every LG phone will suddenly become unsafe overnight, but it does increase risk over time, especially for users who handle banking, work email, two-factor authentication, password managers, or sensitive personal files on the device.
What changes for owners
- No new Android upgrades: Devices should not be expected to move to later Android releases through official LG channels.
- No regular security patches: Monthly or quarterly Android security updates are ending for supported models that still had limited maintenance.
- Fewer carrier fixes: Carrier-specific updates for network compatibility, VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling, and roaming may become rare or unavailable.
- Limited repair options: Official parts, service centers, and warranty-style repair paths are winding down or already unavailable in many regions.
- Declining app compatibility: Some apps may eventually require newer Android versions, newer security frameworks, or current Google Play services behavior.
Repairs are a separate but related problem. LG’s exit means batteries, screens, charging ports, camera modules, and back covers may become harder to source through authorized channels. Independent repair shops may still service popular models such as the LG V60 ThinQ, LG Velvet, LG G8, or LG Wing, but availability will depend on leftover inventory, salvaged parts, and third-party suppliers. Battery replacement is likely to be one of the most common needs, since many LG phones still in use are now several years old and may show shorter runtime, swelling, or unexpected shutdowns.

Network support can also become an issue even if the phone itself remains functional. Carriers continue to retire older network technologies and tighten certification requirements for features such as VoLTE, 5G bands, emergency calling, and Wi-Fi calling. A device that worked reliably in 2021 may lose certain carrier features if it no longer receives configuration updates. Owners should be especially careful before switching SIM cards or moving to a new carrier, because compatibility may vary by exact model number, region, and firmware build.
The end of official support does not make LG phones unusable, but it changes how they should be treated. They are now best suited for low-risk uses such as media playback, offline music, photography, smart home controls, or backup devices. Anyone relying on an LG phone as a primary device should review app requirements, confirm carrier compatibility, back up data regularly, and plan a replacement before a hardware failure or security concern forces a rushed upgrade.

What Existing LG Phone Owners Should Do Now
Owners of LG phones should treat the end of support as a prompt to make a practical transition plan, even if the device still works well day to day. Models such as the LG Velvet, Wing, V60 ThinQ, G8, and Stylo series can remain usable for calls, messaging, media, and basic apps, but the absence of future security patches and official repair channels changes the risk profile. The first step is to confirm that all personal data is backed up somewhere outside the phone, since aging batteries, storage failures, or a damaged screen could make recovery difficult later.
Start with cloud backups for the essentials: contacts, calendars, photos, videos, messages, and app data where supported. Google’s built-in Android backup can preserve many settings and app lists, while Google Photos, OneDrive, Dropbox, or a computer-based transfer can protect media files. For items stored locally, such as downloads, voice recordings, documents, and music, connect the phone to a PC or Mac and copy the folders manually. If the phone uses a microSD card, check what is actually stored there and consider copying that card to another device as well.

Practical steps before replacing an LG phone
- Install any final available updates: Check the software update menu and the Google Play system update section so the device is as current as possible.
- Review account security: Remove old accounts, update passwords, and make sure two-factor authentication is not tied only to the LG handset.
- Export important app data: Banking, authenticator, health, note-taking, and messaging apps may need manual migration or verification on a new phone.
- Check battery health: Rapid drain, swelling, overheating, or random shutdowns are signs that the phone should be replaced rather than kept as a daily driver.
- Factory reset before selling or recycling: After backing up, remove Google accounts, disable screen locks, and erase the device from settings.
For replacement options, the closest fit depends on what made the LG device appealing. Users who liked LG’s clean Android experience and strong audio features may want to look at Google Pixel phones, Sony Xperia models, or select Motorola devices. Those who valued manual camera controls and high-end video tools may be better served by current Samsung Galaxy S and Ultra models, Sony’s Xperia line, or flagship phones from OnePlus and Xiaomi in markets where they are available. Budget-focused Stylo owners may find comparable large-screen devices in Samsung’s Galaxy A series or Motorola’s Moto G lineup.
If keeping an LG phone as a secondary device, limit it to lower-risk tasks. It can still serve as a music player, camera, remote control, offline navigation unit, or backup phone without storing sensitive financial or work data. Avoid using unsupported devices for mobile banking, password management, corporate email, or any service that depends on current security protections. Also be cautious with sideloaded apps, unofficial firmware, and replacement parts from unknown sources, since the end of official support makes it harder to recover from software or hardware problems.
Before moving on, owners should also preserve anything unique to the LG device. Back up photos taken with specialty camera modes, export audio recordings, save Dual Screen files or settings where applicable, and document any app configurations that may not transfer cleanly. Once the new phone is set up, keep the LG handset powered off for a short period as a fallback, then recycle it through an e-waste program, carrier trade-in, or manufacturer recycling channel if it is no longer needed.
LG’s Smartphone Legacy and Notable Innovations
LG’s mobile division leaves behind a record that was uneven commercially but unusually adventurous technically. The company rarely dominated global smartphone sales for long, yet it repeatedly tested ideas that later became mainstream or influenced how rivals approached premium Android hardware. For many owners, devices such as the LG G2, G3, G4, V10, V20, G6, V30, G8, Velvet, and Wing represented an alternative to the more predictable designs from Samsung, Apple, and the large Chinese brands.

The LG G5 helped popularize the ultra-wide rear camera on a mainstream flagship phone, giving users a practical second perspective for landscapes, interiors, group shots, and creative framing. Years later, ultra-wide cameras became standard across high-end and midrange smartphones. LG also leaned heavily into manual camera controls, offering enthusiasts fine adjustment over focus, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and video capture long before such tools were common in default camera apps.

The company was also closely associated with high-quality mobile audio. Models in the V series, especially the LG V20, V30, V40, V50, and V60, became favorites among wired headphone users thanks to their Quad DAC hardware and continued support for the 3.5 mm headphone jack. While competitors removed headphone ports and focused on wireless audio ecosystems, LG kept serving a niche of listeners who wanted better output, local music libraries, and compatibility with premium wired headphones.
Notable LG mobile innovations
- Ultra-wide cameras: LG pushed wide-angle photography early, helping normalize multi-camera phone systems.
- Manual video and audio tools: The V series offered creator-focused controls for recording, monitoring, and playback.
- Quad DAC audio: Select LG phones delivered stronger wired audio performance than most mainstream rivals.
- Rear-mounted buttons: The LG G2 and related models placed power and volume controls on the back, a distinctive ergonomic experiment.
- Modular design: The LG G5 attempted a swappable accessory system, including camera grip and audio modules.
- Dual-screen accessories: The V50 and V60 used attachable second screens as a different path toward multitasking and foldable-style use.
- Rotating display concept: The LG Wing introduced a swiveling T-shaped design aimed at navigation, media, and creator workflows.
LG’s willingness to experiment sometimes worked against it. Modular hardware on the G5 did not gain enough accessory support, the Wing’s rotating screen was memorable but niche, and several software features lacked the polish or ecosystem depth needed to make them everyday essentials. The company also struggled with branding consistency, update speed, and long-term consumer trust after hardware issues affected certain older models. Those problems made it difficult for even strong products to compete against rivals with larger marketing budgets and more predictable upgrade paths.
Even so, LG’s smartphone legacy is larger than its final market share suggests. It helped shape expectations around camera versatility, creator controls, display experimentation, and premium mobile audio. Its best phones appealed to users who wanted something different from the standard flagship formula, and that spirit is a major reason LG devices still have loyal fans after official support has ended. The end of software, repair, and customer support closes the practical chapter of LG phones, but many of the company’s boldest ideas continue to echo across modern Android design.
How the Market Has Changed Since LG Left
Since LG stepped away from smartphones, the market has become more concentrated, more expensive at the high end, and more dependent on long-term software support as a selling point. Samsung and Apple have strengthened their positions in many regions, while brands such as Google, OnePlus, Motorola, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo have competed for the space LG once occupied. In the United States especially, LG’s former carrier-store presence has largely been absorbed by Samsung, Apple, Google Pixel devices, and Motorola’s budget and midrange phones.
The biggest shift is that software longevity now matters much more than it did during LG’s peak years. Buyers increasingly compare update commitments before choosing a phone, and manufacturers have responded with longer support windows. Samsung and Google now advertise multi-year Android version upgrades and extended security patches on many models, while Apple continues to benefit from long iPhone support cycles. LG’s exit makes that contrast sharper: owners of older LG devices are now seeing the practical consequence of a phone maker no longer maintaining an active mobile platform.
Competition moved toward clearer product categories
LG often experimented across many form factors and feature sets, from dual-screen accessories to modular ideas, stylus phones, wide-angle cameras, manual video controls, and high-quality headphone hardware. After its departure, the mainstream market became more standardized. Most flagship phones now follow a familiar formula: large OLED display, mulle rear cameras, 5G, fast processors, water resistance, and an emphasis on computational photography. Foldables have become the main experimental category, led by Samsung and joined by Google, OnePlus, Motorola, Honor, and others, while the traditional slab phone has become more predictable.
- Premium phones: Apple, Samsung, and Google dominate mindshare in many Western markets, with camera processing, AI features, and ecosystem services driving upgrades.
- Midrange phones: Google Pixel A-series, Samsung Galaxy A-series, Motorola, OnePlus, and Xiaomi models now compete aggressively on price and battery life.
- Budget phones: Motorola and Samsung have filled much of the prepaid and carrier-subsidized space where LG once had strong visibility.
- Experimental phones: Foldables and gaming phones have replaced LG-style hardware experiments as the most visible niche categories.
Carrier shelves have changed as well. LG was once a familiar option for shoppers who wanted something different from an iPhone or Galaxy, often at a lower promotional price. Without LG, carriers have leaned more heavily on trade-in deals, installment plans, and exclusive promotions for a smaller set of brands. This has made it harder for smaller manufacturers to gain attention, even when they offer competitive hardware. At the same time, refurbished iPhones, older Samsung flagships, and discounted Pixel models have become stronger alternatives to new midrange Android phones.

Another major change is the rise of on-device AI and ecosystem lock-in. Current phones are sold not only on displays and cameras, but also on photo editing tools, live transcription, call screening, device-to-device sharing, cloud backup, smartwatches, earbuds, tablets, and laptops. LG had pieces of that ecosystem through its TVs, appliances, and audio products, but it never built the kind of tightly integrated mobile platform that Apple, Samsung, and Google now emphasize. Its absence has made the smartphone market less crowded, but also less quirky, with fewer mainstream devices taking unusual hardware risks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still use my LG phone after official support ends?
Yes, your LG phone will continue to turn on, make calls, run apps, and connect to mobile networks as long as the hardware and carrier compatibility still work. The main change is that you should no longer expect official software updates, security patches, repairs, or customer service from LG. Over time, some apps may stop supporting older Android versions, which can make the phone less practical for daily use.
Will my LG phone still receive Android updates or security patches?
No, once LG’s remaining mobile support has ended, users should not expect further Android version upgrades or monthly security patches. This means newly discovered Android vulnerabilities may remain unpatched on LG devices. If you use the phone for banking, work email, password management, or sensitive personal data, replacing it with a currently supported device is the safer choice.
What should I do before replacing my LG phone?
Back up your photos, videos, contacts, messages, and files to Google Drive, Google Photos, a computer, or another cloud service before switching devices. Also make sure two-factor authentication apps, banking apps, WhatsApp chats, and password managers are transferred properly. After confirming your data is safe on the new phone, factory reset the LG device before selling, recycling, or storing it.

Official LG repair channels and parts availability are winding down or ending, so repairs will depend on third-party shops and remaining spare-part inventory. Common fixes like batteries, screens, and charging ports may still be possible for popular models, but availability will vary by region and model. For expensive repairs, it may make more sense to put the money toward a newer supported phone.
What are good replacement options for former LG phone users?
If you liked LG’s manual camera controls, headphone jacks, expandable storage, or unusual designs, your best replacement depends on which feature matters most. Samsung and Google offer strong long-term software support, Sony still appeals to users who value camera controls and media features, and Motorola often provides affordable Android options. Before buying, check the promised years of security updates, carrier compatibility, storage capacity, and whether the phone supports features you relied on, such as microSD or wired audio.
Bottom Line
LG’s smartphone story is now fully closed, with software updates, security patches, repairs, and official customer support reaching the end of the road. If you still use an LG phone, the safest next step is to back up your data, review app and account access, and start planning a move to a currently supported device.
LG leaves behind a memorable mobile legacy built on bold ideas, from wide-angle cameras to dual-screen experiments and audio-focused flagships. For owners, the practical priority now is security and continuity: choose a replacement that offers reliable update commitments and make the transition before unsupported hardware becomes a risk.
