Short answer: Buy an extended plan only after you verify the exact LG OLED model’s manufacturer warranty and compare the written plan terms. LG’s standard coverage is commonly one year for parts and labor, but some models list separate OLED-panel coverage beyond that period with labor charged. An extended plan can cover qualifying failures after the manufacturer warranty, yet its value depends on exclusions, panel treatment, fees, claim limits, and the price quoted for your television.
This guide covers U.S. purchases and the current terms described by LG and Best Buy. Warranty language varies by model, purchase region, seller, receipt, and plan contract. Start with LG’s official warranty information, then read the warranty card supplied with your exact TV.

What LG’s manufacturer warranty normally covers
LG’s U.S. warranty page says eligible products are covered for defects in materials or workmanship when used normally and properly. LG may repair or replace the product at its option. Coverage applies to products purchased lawfully, installed and used in the United States and its territories, and generally begins on the original delivery or purchase date. The page itself directs owners to the packaging and complete model-specific warranty terms, so its summary is not a substitute for the warranty card in your box.

Does every LG OLED have a five-year warranty?
No. A five-year figure cannot be applied to the entire LG OLED range. One current LG support listing for the 83-inch 2025 G5, model OLED83G5WUA.AUS, separates coverage this way:
| Coverage item | Period shown for OLED83G5WUA.AUS | Labor treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Product parts | 1 year | Included during the listed parts period |
| Product labor | 1 year | Included during the listed labor period |
| OLED display panel | Years 2–5 | Labor is charged |
That is a model-specific example, not a portfolio-wide LG promise. It should not be generalized to C-series sets, other G-series years, different screen sizes, or televisions sold outside the United States. The model’s current support page is LG OLED83G5WUA.AUS support, manuals and warranty.
Panel coverage is not full-TV coverage
A panel extension does not automatically protect the power board, main board, speakers, remote, ports, stand, software-related issues, accidental damage, or every other component for the same period. It also may not provide free service: the G5 example explicitly says labor is charged during panel coverage in years 2–5. Ask the seller or LG representative to identify which part failed, whether that part is covered, and who pays labor before assuming a longer panel term equals five years of no-cost ownership.

How LG Premium Care differs from the manufacturer warranty
LG describes Premium Care as an optional service plan for major appliances and home entertainment products. Its support description says plans can add one to three years, cover qualifying mechanical or electrical failures, use LG-authorized parts and technicians, and have no deductible for qualifying repairs. LG also says coverage begins after the manufacturer warranty expires, rather than replacing the initial manufacturer period. The full offer and state-specific contract control; LG identifies Asurion entities as plan obligors depending on jurisdiction.
LG’s current support page displays an example of a $122 one-year OLED TV plan alongside a $425 average repair cost. The page does not state a publication year for that table, so treat both figures as examples shown on the page accessed in 2026, not as a personalized quote, a guaranteed price, or a measured OLED failure rate. Check the current eligibility, price, term, exclusions, and contract before paying.
LG says replacement or reimbursement may be offered when a product cannot be repaired, subject to limitations and exclusions. That language does not promise a replacement of your choice or reimbursement equal to the original purchase price. The contract determines whether a particular failure qualifies and how any replacement or payment is calculated. Details are on LG’s Premium Care information page.

How Best Buy and Geek Squad coverage works
Standalone Geek Squad Protection
Best Buy says Geek Squad Protection extends coverage after the manufacturer warranty. During the manufacturer period, most manufacturer-covered repairs are handled by the manufacturer; the plan may cover additional events, including some power-surge failures, after the manufacturer period or where the plan terms provide. Coverage, limits, exclusions, and service methods vary by product and by the specific plan.
The plan must be purchased with the TV from Best Buy. Best Buy’s FAQ says eligible plans may be added within 60 days, coverage starts on the later of plan purchase or product receipt, and there is no waiting period once coverage starts. These rules do not make every plan eligible, so retain the receipt and verify the exact offer attached to your TV. Read the current Geek Squad Protection overview and Geek Squad Protection FAQ.
My Best Buy Total is a different product
Best Buy also describes My Best Buy Total, a membership product rather than every stand-alone Geek Squad plan. Its TV and home-theater page says members can receive up to 24 months of protection for most new eligible TV, video, and audio products purchased at Best Buy while membership is active. For eligible claims outside the manufacturer warranty, the page describes service fees and a limit of up to two covered claims every 12 months; fee tiers depend on the product’s purchase price. Membership status, eligibility, and the applicable terms matter, so do not use this description to infer the terms of a separate Geek Squad contract. See the Best Buy TV and Home Theater Protection page.

LG warranty vs. extended plan: the comparison that matters
| Question | LG manufacturer warranty | LG Premium Care | Geek Squad Protection | My Best Buy Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| When does it apply? | From original delivery or purchase, subject to the model terms | LG says it begins after the manufacturer warranty expires | Starts on the later of plan purchase or product receipt; no waiting period, according to Best Buy’s FAQ | Protection is tied to an active membership and eligible Best Buy purchases |
| Typical term stated in the supplied pages | Model-specific; one year of parts and labor appears on the 2025 card | One to three additional years are described | Term varies by the product and plan selected | Up to 24 months for most new eligible products, while membership is active |
| What failures are addressed? | Defects in materials or workmanship under normal, proper use | Qualifying mechanical or electrical failures, subject to contract terms | Manufacturer coverage plus certain additional events listed by the plan | Eligible claims under the membership protection terms |
| OLED panel and labor | Model-specific; the OLED83G5WUA lists panel years 2–5 with labor charged | Must be confirmed in the plan contract | Must be confirmed in the TV plan contract; current sources do not establish a burn-in promise | Must be confirmed in the active membership terms |
| Deductible or service fee | Not a plan deductible; excluded causes can leave you paying the repair | LG describes no deductible for qualifying repairs | Varies by plan | Service fees may apply to eligible claims outside the manufacturer period |
| Repair, replacement, or reimbursement | LG may repair or replace at its option | Repair is described first; replacement or reimbursement may be offered if repair is not possible, subject to limits | Varies by the plan’s repair and replacement provisions | Varies by the membership terms |
Cells marked as model- or plan-specific are intentionally not filled with assumptions. A longer advertised term is useful only if it covers the failure you are most likely to face and pays the labor, shipping, diagnostic, and service costs that would otherwise be yours.
Is an extended warranty worth buying for an LG OLED?
There is no universal yes or no. Decide by comparing the plan’s total cost with the specific exposure left by the manufacturer warranty. The available LG examples show $122 for a one-year plan and $425 as an average repair-cost example, but the sources do not provide OLED failure probabilities, claim rates, or an independent expected-value study. Therefore, the $425 figure cannot prove that purchasing the $122 plan will save money.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAn extended plan is more defensible when
- The written plan covers the OLED panel and explicitly states whether labor is included.
- The plan covers electrical or mechanical failures that the manufacturer warranty ends before, with no large service fee or restrictive claim cap.
- The TV is expensive to repair or replace and you do not want to absorb an unexpected bill after the first year.
- You are buying from a seller whose service network, in-home policy, shipping responsibility, and escalation process are clearly stated.
- The price is reasonable relative to the TV’s purchase price and the plan does not overlap for years in which the manufacturer already provides equivalent protection.
Skipping it is more defensible when
- The plan duplicates the manufacturer warranty for most of its paid term.
- The panel is covered only on paper while labor, diagnostics, transportation, or installation remain chargeable.
- Major exclusions remove the risks you are trying to insure, such as accidental damage, power events, commercial use, or a disputed burn-in claim.
- A service fee, claim limit, or replacement cap makes a serious repair nearly as expensive as paying directly.
- You can comfortably self-insure a repair and prefer to avoid a contract with narrow eligibility or a short enrollment window.
Burn-in: what the available terms do and do not establish
The sources available here do not establish a current, plan-specific promise that burn-in on an LG OLED is covered, nor do they establish that every plan excludes it. Best Buy’s overview directs customers to the complete terms and conditions. Do not rely on a salesperson’s general statement or on the word “OLED” in a plan title. Ask for the current TV contract and search its exclusions and definitions for image retention, burn-in, panel defects, misuse, and operating conditions. Keep the answer in writing with your receipt.

Power surges and the role of a surge protector
LG’s 2025 warranty card lists power-surge damage among its exclusions. A surge protector is therefore a separate risk-management purchase, not an extension of LG’s warranty and not proof that a future claim will be accepted. It cannot promise to prevent damage or change the contract’s exclusion. If you buy one, verify its electrical suitability and certification for your installation; no specific product is established here.
Best Buy says some Geek Squad plans may cover power-surge failures, but that protection depends on the plan. Do not assume the manufacturer exclusion is removed unless the exact plan says so.
How to check the exact coverage before paying
- Record the identity of the TV. Write down the complete model number, suffix, screen size, serial number, seller, purchase date, delivery date, and country or territory of use.
- Open the model’s warranty card. Use the packaging, LG support page, or the PDF supplied with the TV. Confirm the parts period, labor period, panel wording, exclusions, and whether commercial use is excluded.
- Separate panel from other components. Ask whether the plan covers the OLED panel, power board, main board, ports, speakers, remote, and labor independently. Require a plain answer for each item.
- Check the start date. Determine whether the plan overlaps the manufacturer period or begins afterward. For Best Buy, verify the later-of-plan-purchase-or-receipt rule and the 60-day addition window for eligible plans.
- Calculate the full out-of-pocket amount. Add the plan price, taxes, deductibles, service fees, diagnostic charges, shipping, installation, and any membership fee. Record whether fees change with the TV’s purchase price.
- Read the claim limit and remedy. Identify the number of claims allowed, repair-versus-replacement rules, reimbursement caps, depreciation rules, and what happens if an equivalent panel or TV is unavailable.
- Check exclusions and evidence requirements. Look for power surges, accidents, misuse, improper installation or repair, commercial use, image retention, cosmetic damage, environmental conditions, and proof-of-purchase requirements.
- Save the documents. Keep the receipt, warranty card, plan contract, serial-number photo, delivery record, and all service communications in one folder.
What to do if the TV fails
- Stop altering the set. Do not open the television or use an unauthorized repairer when the warranty may still apply; improper repair is listed as an exclusion on the LG card.
- Document the symptom. Photograph or video the fault, note when it began, record error messages, and list connected devices and recent power events.
- Identify the responsible period. During the manufacturer warranty, start with LG using the model and receipt. After that period, contact the plan administrator shown in your contract. For a Best Buy purchase, the applicable Geek Squad or My Best Buy Total terms determine the route.
- Ask what is covered before authorizing work. Confirm whether the diagnosis, labor, transportation, panel, and replacement are covered and whether a service fee applies.
- Keep every case number and decision. If a claim is denied, request the specific contract exclusion in writing and preserve the technician’s report for an appeal or second review.
Three practical buying examples
Example 1: A new OLED with one-year full coverage
You buy a TV whose card lists one year of parts and labor and no additional panel term. A one-year extended plan that starts only after that period may reduce the risk of a later board or panel failure, but compare its price with the likely service fee and its replacement cap. If it covers only defects already covered during year one, it adds little value.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Example 2: A model with panel years two through five but chargeable labor
For the OLED83G5WUA example, the panel is listed for years two through five while labor is chargeable. An extended plan is valuable only if it improves the labor and component exposure in those years. A plan that merely repeats panel eligibility without paying labor may leave a substantial bill.
Example 3: A plan marketed as protection against burn-in
Do not buy on the headline alone. Obtain the current contract, find the burn-in or image-retention language, and confirm whether the remedy is repair, panel replacement, reimbursement, or exclusion. The available sources do not establish a universal burn-in answer for LG OLED televisions.
Bottom line: choose coverage, not a headline term
First verify the exact LG warranty card. The manufacturer warranty may provide one year of parts and labor, while a particular model can offer longer OLED-panel coverage with labor charged. Then compare an extended plan’s written coverage, start date, panel and labor treatment, exclusions, fees, claim limits, service network, and remedy. LG’s $122 plan example and $425 average repair-cost example are useful reference points, not proof of expected savings. If the contract clearly covers a costly risk you cannot comfortably self-insure, it may be worth buying; if it duplicates the manufacturer warranty or leaves labor and panel defects uncertain, keep the money and self-insure instead.
