For 4K gaming at up to 120 frames per second, connect the PS5, Xbox Series X|S or gaming PC directly to an HDMI 2.1-capable port on the LG OLED, select that input, and open All Settings > General > Game Optimizer. Enable VRR and ALLM when the TV and source report support. Then set the console or PC to 4K and its target refresh rate, and verify the negotiated signal rather than assuming that an HDMI 2.1 label guarantees 4K/120.
The exact menus and maximum refresh rate vary by LG OLED model and webOS version. LG’s own guides warn that screen images and menu content differ by product, so use the manual for your model before treating any option as available.

What an HDMI 2.1 gaming setup changes
HDMI 2.1 is the connection standard that can carry the bandwidth needed for 4K at 120 Hz on compatible equipment. A working setup still requires three matching parts: an HDMI 2.1-capable port on the TV, a source that can output the mode, and a cable rated for the required bandwidth. An AV receiver, soundbar, capture device or adapter in the middle can prevent the TV from negotiating the full signal, so a direct source-to-TV connection is the simplest starting point.

4K at 120 Hz
“4K/120” means a 3,840-by-2,160 signal refreshed 120 times per second. Consoles generally target this mode rather than guaranteeing that every game renders at 120 frames per second. A game may use a lower, variable frame rate while the display continues to refresh at 120 Hz or uses VRR.

VRR
Variable refresh rate lets the display adjust its refresh timing as the game’s frame rate changes. That reduces tearing and can make uneven rendering look smoother. VRR works only when the TV, source, cable path and game or driver all support a compatible implementation.
ALLM and Game Optimizer
Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) lets the source request the TV’s low-latency mode. LG describes ALLM as technology that reduces the delay between console input and TV output, including in-game sounds and images. On LG OLED televisions, Game Optimizer is the TV-side control center for this behavior and for gaming-related VRR settings.
Check compatibility before changing settings
- Identify the exact OLED model and webOS version. LG says Game Optimizer and its menu items are supported only on selected models, and its gaming overview covers specific model families. Do not assume that an option shown in a guide exists on every OLED.
- Use the correct HDMI socket. Consult the television manual for which inputs support the required HDMI 2.1 bandwidth. Connect the console or PC directly to that port.
- Update firmware and source software. Install current TV firmware, console system software and PC graphics drivers before diagnosing a missing 4K/120, VRR or ALLM capability.
- Use a suitable cable. The cable included with a PS5 is an appropriate starting point. Sony also recommends a certified Ultra-High-Speed HDMI cable for 4K/120 troubleshooting. A cable that works at 4K/60 is not automatically proven to carry 4K/120.
LG OLED settings: the common starting point
1. Select the gaming input
- Turn on the console or PC.
- On the LG remote, switch to the HDMI input used by that source.
- Open All Settings > General > Game Optimizer.
LG’s guidance assumes that the console is connected by HDMI and that its external input is selected. Opening Game Optimizer while viewing a different input will not configure the source you intend to play.

2. Choose the Game Optimizer picture mode
Set the input’s picture mode to Game Optimizer when that mode is available. It prioritizes response time and exposes gaming controls. When ALLM is automatic, LG may restrict some picture adjustments; that is expected behavior rather than a fault.
3. Configure ALLM
In Game Optimizer, leave ALLM enabled or automatic if you want the TV to switch to low-latency behavior when a compatible source starts a game. If you need access to picture controls that are unavailable in automatic low-latency mode, turn ALLM off temporarily, make the adjustment, and then restore your preferred ALLM setting.
4. Configure VRR, G-Sync or FreeSync
On supported webOS versions, open All Settings > General > Game Optimizer > VRR and enable it. NVIDIA PC users should use VRR & G-Sync when that control is present. LG states that the G-Sync control is enabled only when an HDMI cable is connected and the TV is in Game Optimizer screen mode. LG’s G4 specification also lists AMD FreeSync compatibility; AMD users should enable the corresponding FreeSync option when their model exposes it.

5. Keep HDR and tone-mapping choices separate from the signal test
HGiG and Dolby Vision for Gaming can affect how a game’s brightness is mapped, but they do not create HDMI 2.1 bandwidth. First establish a stable 4K/120 or VRR signal. Then adjust HDR or tone-mapping controls using the game’s calibration screen and the options available on your model.
PS5: recommended HDMI 2.1 settings
Sony states that PS5 supports the HDMI 2.1 specification and 4K 120 Hz video output. Use the following baseline, then confirm the actual signal reported by the console.
- On the LG TV, select the PS5 HDMI input and open All Settings > General > Game Optimizer.
- Enable VRR and leave ALLM enabled or automatic when your TV reports support.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Set Resolution to Automatic (or choose 2160p when you need to force 4K).
- Set 120 Hz Output to Automatic or On, according to the label shown by your system software.
- Set VRR to Automatic or On when supported.
- Leave Video Transfer Rate on Automatic. If the image flickers, try -1, then -2; these settings limit the signal and are troubleshooting measures, not performance upgrades.
- Open the PS5’s Current Video Output Signal information and check the reported resolution, refresh rate and VRR status.
Use a direct connection to an HDMI 2.1-capable TV input and the PS5-included cable or a certified Ultra-High-Speed HDMI cable. If ALLM is completely disabled on the PS5, Sony’s guidance requires VRR to be off as well because VRR output can continue to trigger the TV’s low-latency mode.

Xbox Series X|S: verify the console’s reported capabilities
- Select the Xbox HDMI input on the LG TV.
- Open All Settings > General > Game Optimizer and enable VRR and ALLM when the TV and console report support.
- On the Xbox, open its display settings and run the built-in capability tests.
- Confirm that the test screens recognize 4K UHD, 120 Hz and VRR as available.
- If one capability is missing, connect the Xbox directly to the TV’s HDMI 2.1 port and retest with a certified cable.
Xbox menu wording can vary with system updates, while LG menu content varies by model. Treat the console’s test screen as the practical check: it reports what the complete TV, port and cable path can negotiate rather than what any individual component advertises.

TV-side setup
- Connect the graphics card directly to an HDMI 2.1-capable LG input.
- Select that input and choose Game Optimizer as the picture mode.
- Open All Settings > General > Game Optimizer.
- For an NVIDIA GPU, enable VRR & G-Sync. The control requires an HDMI connection and Game Optimizer screen mode.
- For an AMD GPU, enable the corresponding FreeSync option when it is available on the model.
PC-side setup
In the operating system’s display settings or the GPU control panel, select the desired 4K refresh rate. Start with 120 Hz, then test any higher mode that the specific OLED and graphics card support. LG’s G4 specification lists a 120 Hz native refresh rate and VRR up to 144 Hz on listed sizes; that does not establish a 144 Hz limit or capability for every LG OLED.
After applying the setting, verify that the PC reports the selected resolution and refresh rate and that adaptive sync is active. An adapter, dock, receiver or switch can prevent G-Sync or FreeSync from appearing even when the graphics card and TV each support it.

Which setting should you choose?
| Decision | Choose this when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| ALLM/Game Optimizer on | You want the lowest practical input delay during play. | Some picture adjustments may be unavailable while ALLM is automatic. |
| VRR on | Frame rate changes or dips and tearing is visible. | Every device in the chain and the game or driver must support a compatible VRR mode. |
| Fixed 120 Hz | Your game holds a stable frame rate and you want predictable timing. | It cannot synchronize each refresh to fluctuating frame delivery. |
| Direct HDMI-to-TV | You are establishing or troubleshooting 4K/120, VRR or ALLM. | Audio or video equipment that normally sits between the source and TV must be bypassed temporarily. |
| Higher-than-120-Hz PC mode | Your exact OLED size, firmware and GPU report support. | Availability is model-specific; console targets remain centered on 4K/120. |
What LG’s specifications establish
LG’s 2024 G4 product specification illustrates the feature set buyers often seek: 4K 120 frames per second over HDMI, a 120 Hz native panel, VRR up to 144 Hz on listed sizes, response time below 0.1 ms, NVIDIA G-Sync compatibility, AMD FreeSync compatibility, HGiG and Dolby Vision for Gaming at 4K 120 Hz. LG’s broader OLED gaming overview describes 4K/120 Hz, VRR and ALLM as HDMI 2.1 capabilities on supported model families. These figures describe the specified product and listed sizes, not every OLED sold under the LG name.
Troubleshooting missing 4K/120 or VRR
- Update everything. Install current TV firmware, console software and PC graphics drivers.
- Remove intermediaries. Connect the source straight to the TV’s HDMI 2.1 input. Retest before reconnecting a receiver, soundbar, switch, capture device or adapter.
- Replace the cable path. Use the PS5-included cable or a certified Ultra-High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120.
- Reopen Game Optimizer. Confirm that you are on the correct HDMI input and that VRR, VRR & G-Sync or ALLM is enabled as appropriate.
- Check the source’s own report. On PS5, inspect Current Video Output Signal. On Xbox, run the display-configuration tests. On PC, check the operating system or GPU control panel.
- Investigate flicker on PS5. Keep Video Transfer Rate on Automatic first; use -1 and then -2 only if the flicker persists and you accept the reduced signal limit.
- Temporarily disable ALLM for picture tuning. If controls are greyed out, turn ALLM off, adjust the picture, and restore the low-latency setting afterward.
- Confirm model limits. If the TV still reports a lower ceiling, consult the exact model manual. A different LG OLED size, webOS release or HDMI input may support a different refresh range.
A reliable verification routine
Change one variable at a time. Begin with a direct connection, the correct HDMI 2.1 port, current firmware and Game Optimizer. Establish 4K at 120 Hz with VRR off if necessary, then enable VRR and check the source report again. Finally test ALLM behavior and picture controls. This order separates bandwidth or cable problems from adaptive-sync and low-latency settings, making it clear which change solved—or introduced—the problem.
