What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Short answer: Samsung Electronics is the larger, more profitable and more semiconductor-sensitive investment. LG Electronics is a smaller portfolio centered on appliances, HVAC, vehicle solutions and media, with less direct memory-chip exposure but meaningful execution risk in displays, automotive components and B2B growth. Neither is automatically the safer long-term holding: Samsung’s results can swing with memory prices, foundry utilization and very large capital spending, while LG depends on durable-goods demand, margins in appliances and displays, and growth in vehicle and HVAC businesses.
The choice therefore starts with portfolio exposure, not headline earnings. Samsung suits investors who want a broad technology platform with substantial AI-memory and foundry upside and who can tolerate semiconductor cycles. LG suits investors seeking a more focused consumer, climate-solutions and vehicle-components thesis and who accept lower current earnings scale and a less-established comparative valuation case.

What each company actually owns
LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics are both Korean listed electronics manufacturers, but their earnings drivers are very different. LG’s operating portfolio is organized around Home Appliance Solution, Media Entertainment Solution, Vehicle Solution and Eco Solution. LG Innotek adds optics, substrates and automotive-component activities. The resulting investment case is tied to appliances, air-conditioning and HVAC, televisions and webOS-related services, vehicle components, and business-to-business equipment.

This mix makes Samsung a platform with several businesses but a semiconductor-led profit engine. LG is more concentrated in physical products and climate or mobility solutions. The distinction matters because the two stocks respond to different economic signals: chip pricing and factory utilization for Samsung; household demand, commercial construction, vehicle-production volumes, component wins and display profitability for LG.
2025 financial scale: Samsung is much larger, but scale is not a safety guarantee
| Measure (fiscal 2025) | LG Electronics | Samsung Electronics |
|---|---|---|
| Sales | KRW 89.201 trillion | KRW 333.6 trillion |
| Operating income | KRW 2.478 trillion | KRW 43.6 trillion |
| Net income | KRW 1.220 trillion | KRW 45.2 trillion |
| Approximate operating margin (operating income divided by sales) | 2.8% | 13.1% |
These are reported 2025 company figures, not forecasts. Samsung generated roughly 3.7 times LG’s sales and about 17.6 times its operating income. The gap reflects portfolio composition and the semiconductor cycle as well as management execution; it should not be read as a permanent quality ranking. A year of weak memory pricing can compress Samsung’s profit rapidly, while an appliance or display downturn can affect LG differently.
Samsung’s 2025 results also show how much earnings power sits in DS. The division produced KRW 130.1 trillion of sales and KRW 24.858 trillion of operating profit. LG’s 2025 release, by contrast, reported record annual revenue for Home Appliance Solution and Vehicle Solution, while display-based businesses posted an operating loss. For a long-term investor, the question is whether those LG growth areas can compound and whether display losses can be contained, versus whether Samsung can maintain semiconductor leadership through the next cycle.

| Harman | KRW 15.8 trillion | KRW 1.531 trillion | Automotive audio and connected-car electronics |
Samsung states that DS supplied about 36% of divisional sales in 2025 and generated more than half of consolidated operating profit. That concentration answers a common investor question: Samsung is not simply a diversified appliance-and-phone company with a small chip unit. Semiconductor execution is central to the consolidated investment case.

Why memory and foundry cycles matter
Memory businesses can experience sharp swings in average selling prices, inventory and customer orders. Foundry economics add a different risk: factories require high utilization and successful process technology to cover fixed costs. When demand is strong, pricing and operating leverage can lift profits quickly. When customers delay orders or prices fall, the same fixed-cost structure works in reverse.
Samsung’s 2026 shareholder letter identified AI memory, foundry, advanced packaging and AI-enabled devices as strategic priorities. Management described DS as pursuing a one-stop semiconductor offering spanning logic, memory, foundry and advanced packaging. That breadth could support large customer programs, but it also requires sustained research spending, manufacturing investment and flawless execution across several difficult markets.
LG’s business mix: appliances, HVAC, mobility and media
LG’s Home Appliance Solution segment gives investors exposure to refrigerators, washing machines, cooking products and related services. Eco Solution adds air-conditioning and HVAC equipment, including commercial and industrial applications. Those markets are less directly tied to DRAM or NAND pricing than Samsung’s DS business, but they are still cyclical: housing activity, replacement cycles, energy regulation, raw-material costs and consumer confidence affect demand.
Vehicle Solution is LG’s mobility option. Revenue can grow as automakers add infotainment, lighting, connectivity and other electronic content, yet automotive programs take time to win and ramp. Production schedules, customer concentration, warranty obligations and launch execution can delay returns on investment. Record annual revenue in Home Appliance Solution and Vehicle Solution in 2025 is an important operating milestone, not proof that future margins will automatically rise.

Media Entertainment Solution covers televisions and related platform activities. LG has highlighted webOS and services as growth avenues, but display-based operations recorded an operating loss in 2025. Investors should separate hardware volume from profitability: a strong TV shipment number does not ensure acceptable returns if panel costs, promotions or competition remain intense.
Cyclicality: which stock has the more predictable earnings path?
| Exposure | Samsung Electronics | LG Electronics |
|---|---|---|
| Main cycle | Memory prices, foundry utilization, semiconductor demand and capacity additions | Consumer-durable demand, HVAC and construction activity, display economics and vehicle-component ramps |
| Operating leverage | Very high in DS because fabs and equipment carry substantial fixed costs | Varies by segment; manufacturing and component businesses still face fixed costs, but no comparable single semiconductor profit engine is disclosed |
| Potential upside catalyst | AI-memory demand, advanced packaging, improved foundry yields and stronger chip pricing | HVAC and data-center cooling, vehicle solutions, B2B expansion, webOS/services and appliance execution |
| Typical downside trigger | Memory-price declines, weak utilization, technology delays, trade barriers or excessive capacity | Weak household demand, display losses, delayed automotive programs, margin pressure or slower B2B adoption |
Samsung’s larger earnings base can make the company look safer in a snapshot, but its profit volatility can be greater when the chip cycle turns. LG may appear more defensive because appliances are replacement products, yet durable goods are not recession-proof and LG’s display and vehicle businesses introduce their own volatility. Neither stock should be treated as a low-cyclicality substitute for a diversified consumer-staples or utility company.
Capital intensity and reinvestment
Samsung reported approximately KRW 52.7 trillion of capital expenditure in fiscal 2025, including KRW 47.5 trillion in Device Solutions. That spending is necessary to maintain process leadership, add capacity and compete in AI-related memory and logic. It also means investors must judge returns on very large, recurring investments rather than focusing only on reported operating profit.

It can destroy returns when demand is overestimated, utilization falls or a process transition takes longer than planned. Samsung’s cash generation, depreciation, capacity plans and returns on invested capital should therefore be reviewed each reporting period.

LG’s 2025 financial statements do not establish a directly comparable 2025 consolidated capex figure. Its investment decisions are spread across appliance factories, HVAC, vehicle components, displays, software and B2B initiatives rather than concentrated in a disclosed DS-scale semiconductor program. The absence of a comparable figure is not evidence that LG is asset-light; it means investors need to consult the latest LG financial statements before drawing a capital-intensity conclusion.
Growth options through the next cycle
Samsung: AI infrastructure plus devices
- AI memory: Demand for high-performance memory and related products is a principal opportunity, but supply, qualification and pricing can change quickly.
- Foundry and advanced packaging: Winning external customers and improving yields could diversify DS beyond memory. Execution and customer qualification remain decisive.
- AI-enabled devices: Smartphones, televisions and appliances can use on-device or cloud-connected AI to support premium pricing and ecosystem engagement.
- Harman and displays: Automotive audio, connected-car products and display demand add businesses outside core memory, although they are smaller contributors to 2025 operating profit.
LG: climate, mobility and recurring services
- HVAC and data-center cooling: Commercial cooling and AI-data-center infrastructure could expand Eco Solution beyond household air conditioners.
- Vehicle solutions: More electronic content per vehicle creates a long runway, but program wins must convert into profitable production.
- B2B expansion: Commercial appliances, HVAC and other business customers may reduce reliance on one-time household purchases.
- webOS and services: Platform and advertising-related services could add recurring revenue to a hardware-heavy portfolio; investors should track disclosed revenue and margin progress rather than assume software-like economics.
- Display recovery: A return from operating losses would improve consolidated earnings, but competitive pricing and panel costs remain risks.
Shareholder returns and ownership
Samsung’s 2025 annual general meeting disclosure reported total dividend payouts of KRW 11.108 trillion. It also stated a common-share dividend yield of 1.5% under KRX methodology. That yield is tied to the company’s stated methodology and the relevant share price, so it should not be treated as a fixed forward yield.
LG’s investor-relations materials publish dividend information, but a directly comparable 2025 LG yield is not stated in LG’s published figures. Compare each company’s actual cash dividend, payout ratio, buybacks, retention needs and balance-sheet policy using the same date and share class before choosing on income alone.
Ownership also differs. LG Corp. owned 35.3% of LG Electronics’ total shares excluding preferred shares as of September 30, 2025. That concentrated ownership can align a controlling shareholder with long-term value creation, while also making governance and related-party disclosures important for investors to monitor.
Best Value
Samsung’s AGM disclosure stated that five of eight directors were independent, or 62.5%. Board composition is only one governance indicator; investors should also review capital-allocation decisions, executive incentives, related-party transactions and treatment of minority shareholders.
Valuation: why the available figures cannot identify the cheaper stock
A long-term comparison ultimately needs valuation, but the companies’ disclosures do not establish synchronized October 2026 market data. The following metrics therefore cannot support a “cheaper stock” conclusion without a common measurement date.
| Valuation metric | LG Electronics | Samsung Electronics | What is needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Share price and market capitalization | Not stated in company disclosures | Not stated in company disclosures | Same-day prices, share counts and treatment of preferred shares |
| Trailing or forward P/E | Not stated | Not stated | Clearly defined earnings period and analyst estimates, if used |
| EV/EBITDA | Not stated | Not stated | Enterprise value, debt, cash and a consistent EBITDA definition |
| Price-to-book | Not stated | Not stated | Same reporting date and accounting basis |
| Consensus target or expected return | Not stated | Not stated | Dated analyst-consensus source and methodology |
Do not infer valuation from Samsung’s higher profit or LG’s lower share price. A low nominal share price is not evidence of cheapness, and a high P/E can reflect expected cyclical recovery rather than overvaluation. For Samsung, normalize earnings across a memory cycle and account for planned semiconductor investment. For LG, test whether appliance and HVAC margins, vehicle-solution growth and display recovery justify the multiple.
Key risks to monitor before buying either stock
Samsung-specific risks
- Memory-price declines or inventory corrections can reduce DS earnings quickly.
- Foundry yield, technology-transition or customer-qualification setbacks can delay diversification.
- KRW 47.5 trillion of 2025 DS capex highlights the risk of underutilized assets if demand disappoints.
- Trade barriers, export restrictions and geopolitical tensions can disrupt supply chains, customers and production economics.
- Premium-device competition can pressure DX margins even when semiconductor results are strong.
LG-specific risks
- Display-based businesses were loss-making in 2025; a recovery is not guaranteed.
- Consumer demand, promotions, input costs and currency movements can pressure appliance and television margins.
- Vehicle-solution and HVAC growth depends on program execution, customer schedules and commercial adoption.
- Competition in televisions, appliances, components and climate equipment can limit pricing power.
- Concentrated ownership requires careful review of governance, related-party matters and minority-shareholder protections.
A practical framework for choosing between them
- Set your cycle tolerance. Choose Samsung only if you can hold through semiconductor down-cycles and understand that annual profit can move with memory pricing and utilization. Choose LG if you prefer a consumer, HVAC and mobility mix but accept execution risk and lower current earnings scale.
- Define the earnings engine you want. For Samsung, track DS sales, operating profit, memory mix, foundry progress and capex. For LG, track Home Appliance Solution and Vehicle Solution revenue and margins, Eco Solution growth, display losses and service or B2B contribution.
- Check capital allocation. Compare capex, depreciation, dividends, buybacks, debt and free cash flow on the same reporting basis. Samsung’s 2025 capex figure is disclosed; a comparable LG number must be obtained from its current filings.
- Use a normalized valuation. Avoid a single-year P/E at a cycle peak or trough. Build a range using mid-cycle earnings, balance-sheet cash and realistic reinvestment requirements.
- Size for concentration. Samsung adds substantial semiconductor exposure to a portfolio. LG adds durable goods, HVAC and automotive-component exposure. Neither should be mistaken for broad exposure to the entire Korean market.
- Write a monitoring rule. Decide in advance what would invalidate your thesis, such as persistent Samsung foundry underperformance, structurally weak memory economics, repeated LG display losses or failure of vehicle and HVAC investments to produce acceptable returns.
Bottom line for long-term investors
Samsung Electronics is the stronger choice for investors deliberately seeking scale, semiconductor leadership and AI-related memory or foundry upside. Its 2025 KRW 43.6 trillion operating profit and KRW 333.6 trillion of sales demonstrate the earnings power of the platform, but the same platform carries high chip-cycle sensitivity and approximately KRW 52.7 trillion of annual capital expenditure.
LG Electronics is the more focused alternative for investors who want appliances, HVAC, vehicle solutions and media exposure without making memory and foundry the dominant part of the thesis. Its 2025 record revenue in Home Appliance Solution and Vehicle Solution is encouraging, yet display losses and execution demands mean the stock is not automatically defensive.
The companies’ disclosures do not establish which share is cheaper in October 2026. Make that decision only after adding synchronized prices, market values and valuation multiples, then match the result to your tolerance for semiconductor cycles versus appliance, HVAC, display and vehicle-business execution.
