LF Energy also reports strong 2025 event growth, including 365 stakeholders and more than 100 sessions at its Aachen Summit Europe, according to a separate September event report.
Three organizations joined as associate members
The announcement identifies the following organizations as new associate members:

| Organization | What LF Energy says it brings |
|---|---|
| Centre for Net Zero | Collaboration around OpenSynth and AI-generated, AI-ready grid data |
| Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS) | Research and engineering expertise for open energy-system technology |
| Junia | Electric-power-management research and applications |
LF Energy says the additions strengthen its work on shared digital assets for affordable, sustainable and clean energy. That is the foundation’s stated rationale; the announcement does not quantify what the new relationships will deliver. The membership details appear in LF Energy’s December 18 announcement, also published by the Linux Foundation.
Statements from the new members
Gareth Jones, chief operating officer of the Centre for Net Zero, said formalizing the relationship builds on collaboration begun in 2024 and aims to make OpenSynth “the go-to place for AI-generated and AI-ready grid data.” His statement describes an intended contribution, not a measured result.
#1 Best Overall
Khaled Almaksour, responsible for Junia’s Electric Power Management Platform, said joining is intended to bridge research and real-world applications, share developments openly and improve contributions through community collaboration. ICCS is named as a new associate member, but the announcement does not include a separate quotation from the institute.
Apple, Microsoft and Shell representatives join the governing board
These appointments are separate from the associate memberships. LF Energy names the following individuals as governing-board members associated with their employers:
| Representative | Employer | Role in the announcement |
|---|---|---|
| Andy Chu | Apple | Governing-board member |
| Laurent Boinot | Microsoft | Governing-board member |
| Naresh Kumar Gajendran | Shell | Governing-board member |
The source does not specify individual portfolios, voting arrangements or projects assigned to these representatives. It presents the expanded board as part of LF Energy’s broader effort to coordinate shared digital infrastructure for the energy sector.
Projects highlighted: interoperability, optimization and forecasting
Semantic Energy Framework (SEF)
LF Energy describes SEF as a framework intended to address closed platforms, incompatible protocols and vendor lock-in. Its stated design is ontology-agnostic and domain-neutral, supporting semantic data representation, discovery and reasoning across diverse systems. The announcement describes goals and architecture; it does not provide independent adoption figures or measured system benefits.

RTC-Tools
RTC-Tools is presented as an open-source Python package for optimization of water and energy systems. No performance benchmark or deployment outcome is supplied in the announcement.
OpenSTEF
LF Energy points to an OpenSTEF case study involving large-scale forecasting for thermal-energy production and operational decision-making in the Nordic region. The announcement does not report forecast-accuracy metrics, cost savings or other independently verified results.

What “record attendance” means in the 2025 figures
The December announcement says LF Energy Summit Europe in Germany achieved nearly 50% attendance growth over 2024, but it does not give a headcount. A separate LF Energy report dated September 23, 2025 provides the specific figures: 365 stakeholders attended the Aachen summit, described as nearly 50% more than in 2024, and the event featured more than 100 sessions. These are LF Energy’s reported event statistics, not an external audit. See the September Summit Europe report.

It supplies no comparable attendance counts for those activities, so they cannot be treated as additional attendance records.
How to read the announcement
Alex Thornton, LF Energy’s executive director, called 2025 the foundation’s “best year yet,” citing new members, technology and standards projects, and growing summit attendance. That is an organizational assessment. The announcement establishes who joined, who was appointed and what LF Energy says its projects and events are intended to accomplish; it does not independently establish downstream energy-system impact, adoption levels or commercial results.
Quick Recap
- Membership: Centre for Net Zero, ICCS and Junia joined as associate members.
- Board: Andy Chu of Apple, Laurent Boinot of Microsoft and Naresh Kumar Gajendran of Shell were named governing-board members.
- Technical focus: SEF targets interoperable energy data; RTC-Tools targets optimization; OpenSTEF is highlighted for forecasting.
- Attendance evidence: LF Energy reports 365 stakeholders and more than 100 sessions at the 2025 Aachen Summit Europe, with attendance nearly 50% above 2024.
