Windows 10 has the equivalent switch under Settings > System > Notifications & actions.
What the “Let’s finish setting up your device” screen means
This page is a Windows setup recommendation, not a system crash. Windows 11 can display it after an update, a restart, or the initial setup of a new computer. The page may suggest enabling services such as OneDrive, Microsoft 365, Windows Backup, or Microsoft Edge. It can appear at sign-in and may look like a blue screen because it uses a full-screen blue setup interface, but it is different from a Windows stop-error or blue-screen-of-death crash.

The screen is generated by Windows’ out-of-box experience (OOBE) and user-profile engagement notifications. Selecting Remind me in 3 days or Remind me later only postpones the recommendation. It does not disable the setting that allows Windows to show the recommendation again, so the page can return after another restart, update, or sign-in.
You do not need to buy software, install a registry cleaner, or replace hardware to remove this particular prompt. The normal fix is a notification preference. Use the registry method only when the Settings control is missing or fails to work.

Windows 11: turn off the setup suggestion
These steps disable the setting that controls the recurring page. The wording is from current Windows 11 Settings; a minor Windows update can move a switch, but it remains in the Notifications area.
- Open Settings. You can select it from the Start menu or press Windows key + I.
- Select System in the left-hand navigation.
- Open Notifications.
- Scroll down and select Additional settings.
- Clear Suggest ways to get the most out of Windows and finish setting up this device.
- Close Settings and restart Windows. The page should no longer appear at login after a restart or update.
The switch controls the suggestion itself; it does not uninstall OneDrive, Microsoft 365, Windows Backup, Edge, or any other component named on the page. It simply stops Windows from presenting the setup recommendation.
Optional Windows 11 switches
If Windows continues showing other welcome or tip screens, two neighboring options can be disabled in the same Settings > System > Notifications > Additional settings area:
- Show the Windows welcome experience after updates and when signed in to show what’s new and suggested.
- Get tips and suggestions when using Windows.
These options are separate from the finish-setting-up switch. Turn them off only if you also want to suppress post-update introductions and general Windows tips. Leaving them enabled does not reactivate the main setup suggestion if that specific switch is clear.
Windows 10: disable the equivalent notification
Windows 10 places the control in a different Settings page and uses slightly different wording.

- Select System.
- Select Notifications & actions.
- Find Suggest ways I can finish setting up my device to get the most out of Windows.
- Turn that option off, close Settings, and restart the computer.
This is the ordinary Windows 10 path for stopping the OOBE notification at startup. Do not look for Additional settings on Windows 10; that label belongs to the newer Windows 11 layout.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 paths compared
| Windows version | Settings location | Option wording | Normal result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 | Settings > System > Notifications > Additional settings | Suggest ways to get the most out of Windows and finish setting up this device | Stops the setup recommendation from returning at login after updates or restarts. |
| Windows 10 | Settings > System > Notifications & actions | Suggest ways I can finish setting up my device to get the most out of Windows | Stops the OOBE notification on startup. |
Both versions use a preference rather than a repair utility. The main differences are the Settings location and the exact label. If the page is merely annoying, use the matching Settings switch before attempting any advanced method.

Sometimes the setup page appears immediately after sign-in and the user cannot reach the desktop long enough to change the notification preference. Microsoft Community guidance for Windows 10 recommends using Safe Mode in that situation. Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and startup programs, which can provide enough access to change the notification setting.
Use Safe Mode to reach the Windows 10 switch
- Enter the Windows recovery environment. From the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. If you cannot reach that screen, interrupting startup several times can make Windows display recovery options.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- When the numbered Startup Settings menu appears, select Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking if you need network access.
- Sign in, open Settings > System > Notifications & actions, and clear Suggest ways I can finish setting up my device to get the most out of Windows.
- Close Settings and restart normally.
Safe Mode is an access workaround, not a permanent replacement for the notification setting. If the prompt returns after a normal restart, verify that the switch remained disabled. If the computer has recently had a driver, application, or hardware change, note that change; persistent startup problems may have a separate cause from the setup recommendation.
Advanced Windows 11 fallback: change the registry value
Use this method only when the Windows 11 Settings control is unavailable or has no effect. Registry mistakes can make Windows unstable or cause applications and services to operate incorrectly, so create a system backup or restore point before editing anything and follow the path exactly.

Registry procedure
- Sign in to the Windows account that repeatedly receives the prompt. The value is under the current user profile.
- Press Windows key + R, type
regedit, and press Enter. Approve the User Account Control request if Windows asks. - In Registry Editor, browse to
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionUserProfileEngagement. - Locate the ScoobeSystemSettingEnabled DWORD.
- Open it and change its value from
1to0. Keep the value type as DWORD; do not rename neighboring entries. - Close Registry Editor and restart Windows.
A value of 0 disables the setup suggestion for that user profile. If another Windows account on the same computer sees the page, that account may have its own profile setting and require the normal Settings change or a separate registry edit. Do not delete the entire UserProfileEngagement key, and do not use an automated “registry cleaner” to make this change.

Why “Remind me in 3 days” keeps coming back
The reminder buttons are scheduling choices, not an opt-out control. They tell Windows to defer the recommendation for a short period. After the delay, Windows can display the page again, especially following a restart, a cumulative update, or another sign-in. That behavior is expected when the underlying suggestion remains enabled.
To stop the cycle, dismissing the page is not enough: clear the dedicated setup-suggestion option in Windows 11 or Windows 10. The next restart confirms whether the preference has taken effect.

Confirm that the correct switch is disabled
Return to the version-appropriate Settings path and check the exact option. Windows 11’s label includes “finish setting up this device,” while Windows 10’s label begins “Suggest ways I can finish setting up my device.” Turning off a similarly named tips option alone may not disable the setup page.
Restart after changing the setting
The notification may already be queued for the current session. Close Settings and perform a full restart rather than simply locking the screen. Check the next sign-in and the next update-related restart before trying a registry edit.

Check whether another welcome option is responsible
If the recurring screen is a general “what’s new” or tips page rather than the finish-setting-up page, disable Show the Windows welcome experience after updates and when signed in to show what’s new and suggested and Get tips and suggestions when using Windows in Windows 11. These controls address other recommendation surfaces.
Consider the user account
The Windows 11 registry fallback is stored under HKEY_CURRENT_USER, so it applies to the account whose profile is open during the edit. A shared computer can therefore show the page for one account even after it has been disabled for another. Apply the normal per-account Settings change for each affected user instead of modifying system-wide registry locations.
Separate the prompt from a real blue-screen crash
A setup recommendation normally contains buttons such as Remind me in 3 days or Remind me later and allows you to continue into Windows. A true stop error usually reports that Windows encountered a problem, displays a stop code, and restarts or collects diagnostic information. The notification steps in this guide address the former. If the computer is actually crashing, record the stop code and troubleshoot the crash separately.
Escalate hardware or software symptoms separately
If Safe Mode is the only way to start Windows, or if the computer cannot remain running after the notification is disabled, the setup prompt may be coincidental. Recent driver installations, security software, failed updates, or hardware changes can create independent startup problems. Keep the computer’s make, model, Windows edition, and recent changes available when seeking support; those details help distinguish an OOBE notification from a broader startup fault.

|---|---|---|
| You can reach the desktop and use Windows 11 | Disable the switch under Settings > System > Notifications > Additional settings. | Lowest risk; uses the supported user interface. |
| You can reach the desktop and use Windows 10 | Disable the switch under Settings > System > Notifications & actions. | Lowest risk; uses the supported user interface. |
| The screen blocks access, especially on Windows 10 | Start Safe Mode, change the notification setting, then restart normally. | Temporary restricted environment; startup menus can vary by device. |

What this fix does—and does not do
- It prevents Windows from repeatedly presenting the “Let’s finish setting up your device” recommendation.
- It does not remove Windows components or uninstall optional services mentioned by the page.
- It does not repair a genuine stop-error crash, a failed update, or a driver problem.
- It does not require paid software, recovery utilities, or physical accessories.
- It can be reversed by returning to the same Settings page and enabling the suggestion again; a registry edit can likewise be changed from
0back to1if you deliberately want the recommendation restored.
Quick checklist
- Identify whether the screen is a setup recommendation or a real stop-error crash.
- Use the Windows version’s exact Settings path.
- Disable the dedicated finish-setting-up suggestion, not only general tips.
- Restart and verify the next sign-in.
- If access is blocked, use Safe Mode to reach the notification setting.
- Only after those steps fail, back up the system and change the Windows 11 registry DWORD.
Once the appropriate switch is off, Windows should stop prompting you to finish device setup while leaving the rest of the operating system intact.
