For most public websites, Let’s Encrypt is the right starting point. It issues free, browser-trusted Domain Validation (DV) TLS certificates and can automate issuance, installation and renewal through ACME. Choose a paid certificate only when you have a documented need for Organization Validation (OV) or Extended Validation (EV), contracted support, centralized certificate inventory or other lifecycle services that a free DV certificate does not provide.
Both options can protect an HTTPS connection with modern TLS. Paying a certificate authority does not automatically make the encryption stronger. The practical decision is about identity evidence, operations and support—not a “premium” version of encryption.

What you are actually choosing
A TLS certificate binds a public key to a domain name and is signed by a certificate authority (CA). During an HTTPS connection, the browser checks that signature, the certificate dates and the domain names covered by the certificate before negotiating encrypted traffic with the server. The CA’s validation level describes what the CA verified about the requester; it does not describe a stronger cipher.

Let’s Encrypt validates control of the domain through the ACME protocol. An ACME client proves control by completing a challenge—commonly by publishing a token at a specified HTTP path or creating a DNS record—then requests issuance. The result is a browser-trusted DV certificate. Let’s Encrypt’s official FAQ states that its certificates are free, domain validated and intended to enable secure HTTPS connections. It does not issue OV or EV certificates.

The project’s stated goal is to let an operator “set up an HTTPS server and have it automatically obtain browser-trusted certificates without any human intervention,” as described on its How It Works page. Automation is available, but responsibility remains with the site operator: you must run a compatible ACME client, keep credentials secure, install the renewed certificate and reload the web server or proxy.
Paid certificates: validation and services bundled together
A commercial CA may sell DV certificates as well as OV or EV products. OV and EV involve additional organization checks, so the certificate can contain validated legal-entity information. A paid offering may also bundle telephone or chat support, certificate inventory, approval workflows, monitoring, installation assistance, seals, vulnerability assessments or a vendor-stated warranty. These are product and service terms, not proof that the underlying TLS session is more strongly encrypted.
For example, the features shown in a vendor comparison are claims about that vendor’s products. Review the applicable contract, eligibility rules and relying-party requirements instead of assuming that every paid certificate includes every feature or that a warranty would reimburse an ordinary website owner. See the certificate-type comparison for an example of how a commercial CA separates DV, OV and EV products.

DV, OV and EV: what the labels mean in practice
| Validation level | What the CA checks | When it may be justified | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|---|
| DV | Control of the domain, normally through an ACME challenge or another approved challenge. | Personal sites, blogs, small businesses and ordinary public services where the domain name is the required identity. | It does not verify the legal identity of the organization operating the domain. |
| OV | Domain control plus checks on organizational details under the CA’s validation procedure. | A policy, procurement rule or relying party explicitly requires organization information in the certificate. | It does not automatically create a browser warning-free “more secure” connection or change the encryption strength. |
| EV | More extensive organization and authorization checks defined by the CA/Browser Forum requirements. | A specific relying party, internal policy or regulated workflow requires EV evidence. | It does not guarantee higher user trust, a special browser indicator or immunity from phishing. |
Let’s Encrypt offers DV only and says in its FAQ that it has no plans to issue OV or EV certificates. If someone asks for OV or EV, first ask who will inspect that identity and what exact certificate fields or policy language they require. If no relying party checks it, paying for a higher validation tier may add paperwork without solving a real problem.
Does a paid certificate encrypt better?
No. A correctly configured TLS connection can negotiate the same modern protocol versions and cipher suites whether the certificate was free or purchased. The certificate authenticates the domain and supplies a public key; the server and client then establish session keys using the TLS protocol. Certificate price is not a security score.

Security still depends on the whole deployment: supported TLS versions, private-key protection, correct certificate chains, server patching, HTTP security headers, access controls and monitoring. A paid certificate with an exposed private key or an expired deployment is not safer than a properly automated DV certificate. Conversely, a free certificate does not compensate for weak server configuration.
How Let’s Encrypt issuance and renewal work
1. Install an ACME client
Choose an ACME-compatible client supported by your web server, hosting platform or certificate-management system. The client creates an account key and requests a certificate for the names you specify, such as example.com and www.example.com. Keep the account and private keys protected with the same care as other production credentials.
2. Complete a domain-control challenge
The client asks Let’s Encrypt for a challenge. For an HTTP-01 challenge, it places a token under the required /.well-known/acme-challenge/ path and Let’s Encrypt retrieves it over HTTP. For a DNS-01 challenge, the client publishes a TXT record in DNS; this is commonly used for wildcard certificates. The challenge must resolve to the correct server or DNS provider from the public internet.
3. Obtain and install the certificate
After validation, the client downloads the certificate and chain, writes them to the configured locations and updates the web server or reverse proxy. Test both the apex and www names, every load-balanced node and any CDN or edge endpoint. A certificate on one node does not fix an expired certificate on another.
4. Renew before expiry and reload safely
The client requests a replacement certificate before the current one expires, then reloads the service so new connections use it. Let’s Encrypt’s Integration Guide recommends automated renewal, deployment and alerting. Renewal is not complete until the new certificate is actually served to clients.

Renewal is an operational requirement, not a calendar reminder
Let’s Encrypt’s FAQ, last updated April 28, 2025, describes its default certificates as valid for 90 days and optional short-lived certificates as valid for six days. Those figures are time-sensitive. The project has published a shortening schedule: certificates issued or renewed on or after February 10, 2027 will have a 64-day default validity, and the default becomes 45 days on February 16, 2028. The 64-day announcement says the final 90-day certificate is expected to expire on May 11, 2027. Check the announcement and the lifetime schedule for updates before relying on these dates.
Recommended Free Tools
Public TLS limits are also changing independently of any one CA. DigiCert reports the CA/Browser Forum schedule as a maximum of 200 days from March 15, 2026 through March 14, 2027, 100 days from March 15, 2027 through March 14, 2029, and 47 days from March 15, 2029. Its own implementation figures are 199, 99 and 46 days respectively, and the vendor notes that forward implementation dates can change. These are implementation and standards-schedule figures, not a guarantee that every issuer will use exactly the same dates. The validity FAQ provides the vendor’s explanation.
Let’s Encrypt recommends checking ACME Renewal Information (ARI) at least twice daily where supported. As a fallback, renew with roughly one-third of the certificate lifetime remaining; for its current 90-day certificates, the integration guidance corresponds to about 30 days before expiry. Spread requests across a large fleet rather than renewing every host simultaneously, and alert when validation, issuance, installation or reload fails.
Do not hard-code a single annual renewal date. An ARI-aware client can receive the CA’s recommended renewal window, while a fallback schedule should be based on the actual certificate’s not-after date. Test the process on staging, verify that the service reloads without dropping traffic and keep an emergency procedure for deploying a replacement certificate manually.
When Let’s Encrypt is the sensible choice
- Personal site, blog or portfolio: You need browser-trusted HTTPS and control of the domain, not a validated legal entity.
- Small-business website: A free DV certificate avoids a recurring certificate charge while ACME handles routine issuance and renewal.
- API, dashboard or ordinary public application: The relying party checks the hostname and trust chain; it does not require OV or EV fields.
- Large automated fleet: ACME can issue and renew certificates programmatically, provided you implement rate-limit-aware scheduling, deployment checks and monitoring.
- Budget constrained project: Money can be directed to backups, patching, access control and monitoring, which are independent of certificate price.
Let’s Encrypt is not “set and forget.” If your team cannot maintain the ACME client, protect account keys or receive expiry alerts, the free price does not remove the operational risk.

When a paid certificate or management service may be justified
A relying party requires organization identity
Some procurement documents, partner integrations or internal policies explicitly require OV or EV. Obtain the written requirement, identify which certificate fields are inspected and confirm that the issuing CA can satisfy the organization-validation procedure in your jurisdiction. Do not buy OV or EV merely because a salesperson says it will improve browser trust.
Your team needs contractual support
A paid plan may provide defined response times, assisted validation, escalation or installation help. Compare support hours, severity definitions, channels, renewal responsibilities and exclusions. A support promise is valuable only if it covers the outage scenario you need to solve.
You operate many certificates and need governance
Central inventory, ownership records, approval workflows, policy checks, discovery scans and deployment integrations can reduce fleet risk. Compare the management system—not just the certificate—against your current tooling. Confirm whether it can renew ACME certificates, integrate with your load balancers and cloud accounts, rotate private keys and alert the people who can fix failures.
A contractual product term matters
Some commercial products advertise seals, assessments or warranties. Treat each as a term to verify: who qualifies, what events are covered, the claim process, exclusions, limits and whether the feature applies to your certificate type and region. None of these terms changes the cryptographic strength of a properly configured TLS session.

Total cost: include operations, not only the invoice
| Cost component | Let’s Encrypt | Paid certificate or service |
|---|---|---|
| Certificate charge | No charge for issuance under the project’s free service model. | Varies by CA, validation level, term and bundled features; current prices and availability must be checked with the issuer. |
| Validation work | Automated domain-control challenge. | DV may be automated; OV/EV adds organization documentation and approval steps. |
| Automation and deployment | ACME client, hosting integration or your own tooling still needs configuration and maintenance. | May include a portal, integrations or managed lifecycle features, but confirm exactly what is included. |
| Support | Community and documentation channels; no paid enterprise support is implied. | May include contracted support or escalation, subject to the plan’s terms. |
| Failure impact | Expired or incorrectly deployed certificates can interrupt service unless monitoring catches the problem. | A paid certificate does not remove expiry or deployment risk; management services may reduce it if configured and monitored. |
There is no independent statistic in the available evidence establishing a universal savings percentage, compromise-rate difference or security score for free versus paid certificates. Estimate your own total operating cost: staff time for validation and approvals, tooling, support, inventory, incident response and the cost of an outage.
Best Value
A decision framework for your website
- List the names and environments. Include production, staging, APIs, mail-related hostnames, wildcard needs, load balancers, CDNs and disaster-recovery endpoints.
- Identify the relying party. Ask whether a browser, customer, partner, regulator or procurement document requires DV, OV or EV. If no one checks organization identity, DV is usually sufficient.
- Choose the automation owner. Assign a team responsible for ACME credentials, DNS or HTTP challenges, deployment, reloads and alerts. “The hosting provider handles it” is acceptable only when the contract and monitoring make that responsibility explicit.
- Check compatibility. Verify that your server, proxy, CDN and older clients accept the certificate chain and that your client can perform the required challenge. Test renewal on every architecture variant.
- Compare lifecycle features. If you consider a paid product, compare inventory, integrations, approval flows, support scope and key-rotation controls—not just the certificate’s validation label.
- Model failure recovery. Document how to revoke a compromised certificate, issue a replacement, deploy it to every node and confirm the public endpoint serves the new chain.
Implementation checklist for a reliable free or paid deployment
- Inventory every certificate name, owner, endpoint, issuer and expiration date.
- Use separate permissions for ACME account keys, DNS API tokens and server deployment credentials.
- Prefer DNS API tokens scoped to the required zones and records; never put broad DNS credentials in an unprotected script.
- Run renewal in a staging environment before changing production automation.
- Verify the served certificate externally after deployment, including all load-balanced addresses.
- Alert well before expiry and on every failed validation, failed issuance, failed installation and failed service reload.
- Check ARI at least twice daily when your client supports it, following the Let’s Encrypt integration guidance.
- Stagger large-fleet renewals and respect CA rate limits.
- Record the certificate chain and private-key rotation procedure in your incident documentation.
- Recheck lifetime policies when upgrading clients or changing CAs; the ACME protocol updates page tracks protocol-related changes.
Troubleshooting common certificate failures
Challenge validation fails
Confirm that DNS has propagated to the intended address, port 80 or the required DNS record is publicly reachable, redirects do not block the challenge path and a firewall or CDN is not serving a stale token. For DNS-01, remove conflicting TXT records only when your client’s documentation says it is safe; multiple simultaneous challenges may require multiple records.
The certificate renewed but visitors still see the old one
Check the file paths used by the running process, reload or restart the correct service, and inspect every reverse proxy, load-balancer node and CDN edge. Compare the public not-after date with the newly issued file. A successful issuance log does not prove successful deployment.
Renewal works manually but not unattended
Run the scheduled job under its real service account and environment. Check permissions, missing DNS credentials, non-interactive prompts, locked-down outbound access and whether the job can reload the service. Add a dry-run renewal test and alert on non-zero exit status.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA paid OV/EV request is delayed
Review the CA’s exact validation checklist, legal-name matching, authorization contacts and required documents. Ask the relying party whether DV would meet the actual requirement while validation is completed; do not substitute an unverified claim about browser display or user confidence.
Bottom line
Choose Let’s Encrypt when your website needs ordinary browser-trusted HTTPS, domain validation is enough and you can automate renewal and monitor deployment. Choose a paid OV/EV certificate or lifecycle service only for a verified identity, support or fleet-governance requirement. Evaluate the entire operating process—challenge, key protection, installation, reload, alerting and recovery—because neither a zero price nor a paid label can replace reliable TLS operations.
