For a 16-inch office laptop, compare specific configurations—not the ThinkPad and EliteBook names in isolation. The Lenovo ThinkPad T16 Gen 4 is a compelling fit if its Ethernet option, port mix, TrackPoint, or familiar keyboard suits your desk. The HP EliteBook 8 G1i 16 may be a better match when the exact screen, memory, security features, or local service offer fits your needs. Check the full SKU and regional terms before deciding; options vary within both product lines.
Compare the exact configuration first
The ThinkPad T16 Gen 4 and EliteBook 8 G1i 16 are configurable business laptops. A feature listed for a model family may be optional or available only on certain regional SKUs. Before comparing prices or placing a fleet order, get the full model number and confirm the specifications attached to that offer.

Which laptop has the better display?
Neither model name guarantees a particular screen. Lenovo’s T16 Gen 4 listings include WUXGA options with different brightness and color coverage, including variants described as 100% sRGB. HP’s cited EliteBook 8 G1i 16 listings include 400-nit, 100% sRGB WUXGA configurations as well as touch options with different brightness and color coverage. Confirm the panel for the exact SKU rather than assuming all WUXGA screens are alike.

How do their memory and ports compare?
The cited configurations of both laptops list two SODIMM slots. Check the installed memory and whether one or both slots are occupied, along with the supported maximum for the regional SKU; a slot count alone does not establish the capacity included in the system you are buying.
| Connection or feature | ThinkPad T16 Gen 4 | EliteBook 8 G1i 16 |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C | Two USB-C/Thunderbolt ports listed in Lenovo’s product specification. | Two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports plus another USB-C port in the cited HP listing. |
| USB-A | Two ports listed. | USB-A listed; count depends on the configuration listing. |
| Display connection | HDMI listed. | HDMI listed. |
| Wired Ethernet | Ethernet listed in Lenovo’s specification; verify the exact configuration. | Some Ethernet features are optional according to HP family documentation; verify the selected SKU. |
| Other options | Optional SIM and smart-card features are listed for relevant configurations. | Optional smart-card reader; cellular features depend on the configuration. |
For a desk with wired networking or several direct connections, the ThinkPad’s listed Ethernet and port mix may reduce reliance on adapters, provided those features are present on the SKU you choose. For either laptop, match any USB-C or Thunderbolt dock to the laptop, monitor resolution and refresh rate, and required charging power.

Which is easier to carry, and which lasts longer?
Lenovo’s US ThinkPad T16 Gen 4 listing gives a starting weight of 1.77 kg (3.90 lb), while HP’s US EliteBook 860 G11 listing gives a starting weight of 3.8 lb. Both are model-family starting figures, not weights for every configuration. The HP figure is for the 860 G11—not the EliteBook 8 G1i 16—and should not be treated as a direct weight comparison between the two models in this article.

Keyboard and pointing: ThinkPad conventions or HP layout?
Lenovo documents a spill-resistant ThinkPad keyboard with 1.5 mm travel, a numeric keypad, and TrackPoint on the T16 Gen 4 listings. HP describes the cited EliteBook 860 G11 configuration as having a spill-resistant, backlit keyboard with a numeric keypad. That HP keyboard description is for the 860 G11, not confirmation of every EliteBook 8 G1i 16 configuration.
Typing feel and pointing-device preference are personal. If the laptop will become a fleet standard, let likely users try the keyboard and pointing setup before rollout.

Security, management, warranty, and support
Both product lines offer business-oriented features, but availability depends on SKU and, in some cases, licensing. Lenovo lists options such as vPro, smart card, fingerprint reader, and IR camera on relevant T16 configurations. HP lists Wolf Security offerings and options including smart card, fingerprint reader, IR camera, and vPro depending on the configuration and license. Confirm which features are included rather than relying on family-level descriptions.
Warranty terms also vary by model and offer. The cited HP EliteBook 860 G11 US retail listing specifies a three-year limited warranty; that does not establish the warranty for the EliteBook 8 G1i 16 or for HP laptops in other countries. Check the exact warranty and local onsite-support terms for both vendors in the procurement region.
