Short answer: Every ThinkCentre M75q Gen 2 has a standard front USB-C data port, front USB 3.2 Gen 2 fast-charge port, headphone/microphone jack, and a rear panel with USB, HDMI 1.4b, DisplayPort 1.4 and Gigabit Ethernet. Extra rear connectors—including VGA, a second DisplayPort or HDMI, serial, parallel and a rear USB-C port with DisplayPort function—were configuration options, not universal equipment. Lenovo specifies up to three independent displays, two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots with a documented 64 GB maximum, and storage for one 2.5-inch SATA drive plus one M.2 NVMe SSD.
Before ordering cables, monitors, memory or a drive, inspect the exact rear-panel layout and machine type/model. The M75q Gen 2 was sold in several port configurations, and Lenovo’s specification limits depend on the installed processor and fitted outputs.

Which Lenovo specification should you trust?
Lenovo’s Product Specifications Reference (PSREF) is the controlling source for the model’s published capabilities. The current ThinkCentre M75q Gen 2 page is marked withdrawn and shows a revision dated March 19, 2026. You can check the model page at Lenovo’s ThinkCentre M75q Gen 2 PSREF and download the matching March 19, 2026 specification PDF.
A December 10, 2025 PSREF PDF provides the detailed port listing at this Lenovo document. An older platform reference, Lenovo’s legacy platform specification, reports some different display limits. Those differences reflect document revisions and configurations; they should not be combined into a single set of limits. For a particular computer, compare its serial/type configuration and physical connectors with the current model-specific PSREF.

Standard ports on the M75q Gen 2
The ports below are the connections Lenovo lists as standard. “Standard” means expected on the platform, while the optional rear positions described in the next section can change the connector mix on a sold unit.
Front panel
| Port | Lenovo’s description | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C | USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 for data transfer | Use it for USB peripherals and data devices. Lenovo does not specify video output for this front connector. |
| USB-A | USB 3.2 Gen 2 with Always On and fast charge | Provides a high-speed USB connection and can charge a compatible device when the computer is configured for Always On power. |
| Audio | 3.5 mm headphone/microphone combo jack | One jack handles headset audio input and output. |
The front USB-C port is the source of a common setup mistake. Lenovo describes it as a data-transfer port, not as a display output. Do not buy a USB-C monitor or USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable on the assumption that this front socket carries video. The optional rear USB-C connector is the one Lenovo specifies with DisplayPort function.
Rear standard panel
| Quantity | Port | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | USB 2.0 | Suitable for keyboards, mice, printers and other lower-bandwidth peripherals. |
| 2 | USB 3.2 Gen 1 | Higher-speed USB-A connections for external storage and other devices. |
| 1 | HDMI 1.4b | Standard integrated-graphics display output; Lenovo specifies the resolution/refresh limits in the display table below. |
| 1 | DisplayPort 1.4 | Standard digital display output with the highest listed 4K refresh capability. |
| 1 | Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45 | Wired network connection. |
The standard rear panel therefore gives you two digital display outputs—HDMI and DisplayPort—but it does not guarantee a third physical video connector. A third monitor requires an available optional output or another display method that is compatible with the installed configuration.

| Optional connector or arrangement | Important qualification |
|---|---|
| VGA | Can occupy an optional position; it is not present on every chassis. |
| Second DisplayPort | Adds another digital display connector when fitted. |
| Second HDMI | Adds another HDMI output when fitted. |
| Rear USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 with DisplayPort function | This is the USB-C port Lenovo identifies as supporting DisplayPort; it is distinct from the front data-only USB-C port. |
| Serial | A first serial port may be selected, with a second serial port listed among further options. |
| Additional USB ports | Some configurations substitute extra USB connectivity in an optional position. |
| Two DisplayPorts in the optional positions | Lenovo lists an arrangement with two DisplayPort connectors occupying optional positions. |
| Parallel port | Available only on configurations ordered with that option. |
These options are physical configuration choices, not adapters hidden in software. An M75q Gen 2 with VGA cannot be assumed to have the second HDMI or rear USB-C, and a unit with a serial connector may lack an extra display output in that position. Ask for a clear photograph of the rear panel or verify the machine’s exact type/model record before purchasing a monitor cable, KVM or docking accessory.
How many monitors can it run, and at what resolution?
Lenovo specifies up to three independent displays through the onboard DisplayPort and HDMI plus optional ports. “Up to three” is a platform maximum, not a promise that every unit has three usable video connectors. The processor’s integrated graphics, the optional-port configuration and the timing supported by each connector all matter.
| Output | Maximum listed mode | Condition and interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| DisplayPort | 3840 × 2160 at 60 Hz | Lenovo’s current PSREF figure for the onboard DisplayPort 1.4 output. |
| HDMI | 3840 × 2160 at 30 Hz, or 2560 × 1440 at 60 Hz | HDMI can drive 4K, but the listed 4K mode is 30 Hz; 1440p is listed at 60 Hz. |
| VGA | 1920 × 1200 at 60 Hz | Applies when the optional VGA connector is fitted. |
Those are manufacturer specification figures for the integrated-graphics platform, not independent benchmark results. Lenovo also notes that the precise capability depends on the installed processor and fitted output. Consequently, three monitors do not automatically mean three 4K/60 screens: the DisplayPort can reach the listed 4K/60 mode, HDMI’s listed 4K mode is 30 Hz, and VGA is limited to the listed 1920 × 1200 at 60 Hz.

- Two-screen office setup: Use the standard rear DisplayPort and HDMI. At 4K, expect the HDMI screen to be limited to the listed 30 Hz mode; use DisplayPort for a 4K/60 panel.
- Three digital screens: You need the standard DisplayPort and HDMI plus a fitted optional DisplayPort, second HDMI or rear USB-C with DisplayPort function. Confirm that the processor and the chosen outputs support the desired timings.
- Legacy VGA screen: A VGA-equipped unit can connect a display up to Lenovo’s listed 1920 × 1200 at 60 Hz. The presence of VGA does not prove that another optional digital output is installed.
Adapters can change the connector shape but cannot guarantee a higher electrical capability than the source output. For example, converting HDMI to another connector does not turn the M75q Gen 2’s listed HDMI 4K/30 limit into 4K/60. Check whether an adapter is active or passive and whether it supports the resolution and refresh rate you require.

Why older specifications may show different numbers
The legacy platform document linked above reports different HDMI and optional USB-C/DisplayPort maximums from the current model-specific PSREF. If a monitor behaves differently from an old listing or forum post, first identify the document revision and the exact machine configuration. For current purchasing and deployment decisions, use the March 19, 2026 PSREF figures rather than silently merging older limits with newer ones.
Memory: two SO-DIMMs and a documented 64 GB ceiling
The M75q Gen 2 has two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots and supports dual-channel operation. Lenovo documents up to 64 GB of DDR4-3200 using its tested memory offerings. That is the manufacturer’s tested maximum, not an immutable statement that no future memory technology could work; Lenovo explicitly notes that the system may support more as memory technology develops.
| Memory question | Lenovo’s documented answer |
|---|---|
| Slots | 2 DDR4 SO-DIMM slots |
| Maximum listed capacity | 64 GB total |
| Rated memory type | DDR4-3200 |
| Possible operating speeds | 2666, 2933 or 3200 MT/s, depending on processor memory support |
| Channel capability | Dual-channel capable when modules are installed in a suitable paired arrangement |
A DDR4-3200 module may therefore run at 2933 or 2666 MT/s when the processor supports only that speed. The rating on the module is not a promise of the actual operating speed. Capacity, module organization and firmware compatibility also matter, so treat an unverified module as a compatibility risk rather than assuming any DDR4 SO-DIMM will work.
Planning a RAM upgrade
- Record the installed capacity and processor model from the operating system or Lenovo system information.
- Open the exact machine’s service documentation and confirm that both SO-DIMM slots are accessible in your chassis configuration.
- Choose matched DDR4 SO-DIMMs when practical if you want dual-channel operation, staying within Lenovo’s tested 64 GB total.
- After installation, verify the detected capacity and the reported memory speed. A lower speed can be normal when required by the processor.
The PSREF establishes platform support; it does not guarantee the performance or compatibility of a particular third-party module. Keep the original modules until the replacement has passed a memory test and the system has recognized the expected capacity.

Storage: one 2.5-inch SATA drive plus one M.2 SSD
Lenovo lists support for up to two drives: one 2.5-inch SATA hard-disk drive and one M.2 solid-state drive. The detailed storage table includes M.2 2242 PCIe NVMe PCIe 3.0 x2 and M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4 options, along with 2.5-inch SATA HDD configurations.
| Drive position | Interface and sizes Lenovo lists | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5-inch bay | SATA HDD | Confirm that the computer has the 2.5-inch bracket, drive cable and mounting hardware; platform support does not mean every sold unit includes them. |
| M.2 slot | 2242 PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x2; or 2280 PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x4 | Match the module’s physical length and NVMe interface to the slot and the machine’s supplied screw/standoff. |
Lenovo’s listed capacities are based on tested offerings and may not define an absolute future maximum. Do not confuse an M.2 SATA module with the NVMe PCIe options Lenovo lists. Before ordering a 2.5-inch drive, inspect the actual unit for the bay hardware and cable; many compact systems are sold without those parts when configured only with M.2 storage.
Choosing between the two positions
- Adding an M.2 SSD: Select 2242 or 2280 according to the available mounting point, and choose PCIe NVMe rather than assuming every M.2 form factor uses the same protocol.
- Adding a 2.5-inch drive: Verify the bracket and cable first. If either is missing, the drive cannot simply be secured and connected by software configuration alone.
- Using both drives: The platform supports one of each, but the exact factory configuration determines which hardware is already installed and whether the second position is ready for use.
Buyer and IT-deployment checklist
Use this checklist when evaluating a used unit, planning a refresh or ordering a fleet.
- Identify the exact machine: Capture the type/model, serial information and processor. Do not rely on the “M75q Gen 2” name alone.
- Photograph the rear panel: Count the actual HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA, serial, parallel and USB-C connectors. Optional positions vary.
- Map the monitors: Write down each monitor’s required resolution and refresh rate, then assign the standard DisplayPort, HDMI and any optional output. Remember the listed HDMI 4K/30 limit.
- Check the front USB-C assumption: Treat it as data-only unless Lenovo’s exact configuration says otherwise; video-capable USB-C is the optional rear port with DisplayPort function.
- Inventory memory: Determine whether the unit has one or two SO-DIMMs and plan capacity up to Lenovo’s tested 64 GB, allowing for processor-dependent speed.
- Inventory storage hardware: Confirm the installed M.2 length and whether the 2.5-inch bay bracket and cable are present before buying a second drive.
- Save the relevant PSREF: Keep the current Lenovo page or PDF with the deployment record so a later technician can distinguish the 2026 figures from older platform documents.
Common setup problems and what they indicate
A third monitor has no signal
Check whether the machine actually has a third physical video output. Two standard rear outputs alone do not provide three connectors. If the third connector is VGA, the listed ceiling is 1920 × 1200 at 60 Hz; if it is an optional digital connector, confirm the processor and output combination against the current PSREF.

A 4K HDMI monitor feels limited
The current Lenovo table lists HDMI at 3840 × 2160 and 30 Hz, not 60 Hz. Use the standard DisplayPort for a 4K/60 display when possible, or select a lower resolution such as the listed 2560 × 1440 at 60 Hz on HDMI.
A USB-C display adapter connected to the front port does nothing
That result is consistent with Lenovo’s description of the front USB-C as data-transfer only. Look for the optional rear USB-C port specifically described with DisplayPort function, or use the standard rear HDMI/DisplayPort outputs.
New RAM runs below 3200 MT/s
Lenovo lists 2666, 2933 and 3200 MT/s depending on processor support. Confirm the processor before treating a lower reported speed as a fault. Also verify that both modules are detected and that total capacity is correct.
Recommended Free Tools
A 2.5-inch drive cannot be mounted
The platform’s support for a 2.5-inch SATA drive does not guarantee that a refurbished unit includes the bracket and cable. Inspect the chassis and obtain the required mounting parts before concluding that the drive or system is defective.
