Choose the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 Chromebook 14M868 if you want a conventional 14-inch laptop with a built-in keyboard. Choose the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 11M889, also called Duet Gen 9, if you want a touchscreen device that can detach into a tablet and use a folio keyboard. The Duet name also applies to older, different hardware, so this comparison is specifically about the 11M889 generation.
What is the main difference?
The Slim 3 is a clamshell Chromebook: its screen and keyboard stay together like a standard laptop. The Duet 11M889 is a detachable Chromebook: its tablet can separate from the folio keyboard. That difference matters more to the buying decision than the processor names alone.

- Choose the Slim 3 for a fixed laptop setup, a larger 14-inch screen, and routine typing without attaching a keyboard.
- Choose the Duet 11M889 if tablet mode and a touchscreen are important parts of how you plan to use the device.
These are form-factor recommendations, not claims that either Chromebook is universally faster or lasts longer on a charge.

Slim 3: check the exact panel
Lenovo lists three 14-inch panel types for the Slim 3 14M868 family: HD (1366 × 768) TN at 250 nits, FHD (1920 × 1080) TN at 250 nits, and FHD IPS multi-touch at 300 nits. The touchscreen IPS panel is an option, not a standard feature across every Slim 3 configuration. For example, Lenovo’s listing for SKU 82XJ0041MH specifies an FHD TN panel, despite that model’s 8 GB of memory and 128 GB of storage. Check the display listed for the exact model you are considering. Lenovo PSREF: Slim 3 14M868 family and Lenovo PSREF: SKU 82XJ0041MH.

Duet 11M889: touchscreen tablet format
Lenovo’s US listing for part 83HH0001US specifies a 10.95-inch WUXGA touchscreen. It also lists an included USI Pen 2, but contents can vary by regional listing and part number. Confirm the keyboard and pen included with the particular Duet you intend to buy. Lenovo US: Chromebook Duet Gen 9, part 83HH0001US.
Which is better for typing and carrying?
For everyday laptop work: Slim 3
The Slim 3 has a built-in keyboard and clamshell layout, so it is the straightforward choice for someone who expects to use the Chromebook mainly as a laptop. Lenovo lists a starting weight of around 1.3 kg for the family; the exact configuration may differ. Its listed ports include USB-A, USB-C, a combo audio jack, and a microSD card reader. Check Lenovo’s specifications for the exact regional configuration if a particular port is essential. Lenovo PSREF: Slim 3 14M868 family.

For tablet use: Duet 11M889
The Duet’s keyboard/folio arrangement lets you separate the tablet from its keyboard. That is useful when you want to use the touchscreen without the keyboard attached, but it means the keyboard is a detachable component rather than part of a permanent clamshell. Lenovo’s PSREF lists USB-C ports and a detachable folio connection; verify the exact port and accessory details for the relevant part number. The tablet’s weight alone does not describe the weight of the complete device with its keyboard and folio, so do not compare it with the Slim 3’s clamshell weight without matching what is being carried. Lenovo specifies a MediaTek Kompanio 520 processor for the Slim 3 14M868 and a MediaTek Kompanio 838 for the Duet 11M889. The processor labels are not a comparable performance test, so they do not establish which feels faster for browsing, video calls, or other workloads.

Do battery claims settle the choice?
No. Lenovo’s Slim 3 specifications list a Google power-load battery result of up to 13.5 hours. Lenovo’s 2024 announcement for the Duet 11-inch generation claims up to 12 hours. These are manufacturer claims with different stated contexts, not results from a controlled head-to-head test, and they do not predict how long either device will last for your workload. Make sure you are comparing the right Duet
Lenovo has used the Duet name for more than one Chromebook. The Duet 11M889 / Gen 9 discussed here uses a MediaTek Kompanio 838 and an approximately 11-inch-class display. The older 2020 IdeaPad Duet Chromebook is a different 10.1-inch device with a MediaTek Helio P60T and 4 GB of memory. Do not apply one generation’s specifications or accessories to the other; identify the model number and confirm accessory compatibility before buying. - Decide whether you need a tablet. If you want a detachable touchscreen, favor the Duet 11M889. If you want a conventional laptop, favor the Slim 3.
- Check the exact screen. On the Slim 3, confirm whether the listing is HD TN, FHD TN, or FHD IPS touchscreen. On the Duet, check the exact generation and regional part number.
- Match memory and storage. Compare specific configurations rather than the maximum listed for each family.
- Check the listing for included accessories. In particular, confirm whether a Duet listing includes its folio keyboard and pen.
- Verify current local price and ChromeOS update support. Neither a current price nor an update-support date is established by the specifications above; check the retailer and Google’s current support information for the exact model before purchase.
Verdict
The Slim 3 Chromebook 14M868 is the simpler fit for a built-in keyboard, clamshell use, and a 14-inch display. The Chromebook Duet 11M889 is the better fit when detaching the touchscreen into a tablet is a meaningful benefit. Neither the processor names nor the available manufacturer battery claims establish a universal performance or endurance winner; compare exact configurations and choose the form factor you will actually use.
