Lenovo Legion RGB Lights: How to Turn Off the Keyboard and Other LEDs

On many Lenovo Legion laptops, press the keyboard-brightness-down shortcut repeatedly until the keyboard lights go out. The exact key combination depends on the model, and keyboard, logo, and chassis lights may use separate controls. Check the model-specific Lenovo guide if the shortcut is unclear.

Turn off the keyboard lighting

  1. Find your exact Legion model. Check its Lenovo support page or user guide and confirm whether your configuration has a white backlight, a multi-color keyboard, or additional lighting zones. Configurations differ, so a shortcut shown for one model may not apply to another.
  2. Press the keyboard-brightness-down key repeatedly. On documented multi-color models, repeated presses of the dimming shortcut cycle the keyboard brightness down to off. Depending on the model, the shortcut may be Fn plus the key marked with a dimming icon, Fn+Down, or a dedicated backlight key. Follow the symbol and instructions for your laptop.
  3. Check the result. If the keyboard remains lit, consult the model guide to see whether the shortcut changes brightness, cycles modes, or controls a different lighting zone.

For example, Lenovo’s Legion 9i (18-inch, 10th-generation) guide says to press Fn plus the keyboard brightness-down key multiple times to turn the keyboard lights off. The Legion 7a (15-inch, 11th-generation) guide identifies Fn+Down for keyboard brightness, with repeated presses reaching off.

Why Fn+Space may not turn the lights off

On several Legion models, Fn+Space cycles through lighting effects rather than serving as the brightness-off control. If it changes colors or patterns, use the documented brightness-down shortcut instead. The exact behavior still depends on the model: Lenovo describes Fn+Space as an effect-cycle control on the Legion 7a and in its Legion 7 Pro guide.

Control logo and chassis lights separately

Turning off the keyboard may not switch off every light on the laptop. Some Legions have lighting on the Legion logo, rear connectors, ventilation slots, or sides; controls can be separate or grouped. For instance, Lenovo’s Legion 9i (16-inch, 9th-generation) guide lists Fn+U for rear connector lights and Fn+L for the Legion branding light. The 18-inch, 10th-generation Legion 9i guide also identifies Fn+L for the branding light. Check your own model’s guide rather than assuming one keyboard setting controls every zone.

Use the lighting app listed for your model

Lenovo’s newer guides name Legion Space for lighting customization; some earlier guides refer to Lenovo Vantage or PC Manager. Open the utility specified in the user guide for your exact model and use its lighting controls if you prefer software settings or the keyboard shortcut does not behave as expected. App names and interfaces vary across models and guide generations, so an older guide should not be treated as a current universal menu path.

When the lighting controls seem overridden

Check Windows Dynamic Lighting

On supported systems, Windows Dynamic Lighting can take priority over Lenovo’s lighting effects. On the Legion 7a configuration in its guide, check Windows Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting and the controller priority. Lenovo notes that if Dynamic Lighting is enabled and set as the first priority, Legion’s pre-configured effects are deactivated. The setting may not be available or behave the same way on every Legion.

Check for a model-specific lighting controller

Lenovo’s guide for an older 16-inch, 6th-generation Legion 7 says Corsair iCUE controls the effects on that configuration; while iCUE is running, Fn+Space cannot cycle Lenovo’s pre-defined effects. Quit iCUE if you want that documented Legion 7 to return to Lenovo’s factory effect controls. This is a model-specific note, not evidence that iCUE conflicts with lighting controls on every Legion.

If the lights still will not turn off

  • Confirm the full model and configuration, including whether the light is on the keyboard, logo, connectors, vents, or sides.
  • Use the shortcut printed on that model’s keys or listed in its Lenovo guide; do not assume Fn+Space is the off control.
  • Try the model’s Lenovo lighting utility if the guide provides one.
  • If Windows Dynamic Lighting is available, check whether its priority is taking control of effects.
  • For a lighting zone with a separate shortcut, use that control rather than the keyboard-brightness setting.

For a configuration-specific example, Lenovo’s Legion Pro 5 16IRX9 support page explains how to check whether the computer is configured with a backlit keyboard and describes its backlight-mode control. The relevant guide for your exact machine is the safest source for its keys and supported lighting zones.
