Lenovo Legion Go S vs Steam Deck OLED: Which Handheld Should You Buy?

Choose the Steam Deck OLED if you want Valve’s SteamOS handheld with an OLED display. Choose a Legion Go S if its larger 8-inch, higher-resolution, faster-refresh IPS screen—or a particular Windows or SteamOS configuration—better suits you. The Legion Go S name covers different hardware, so compare the exact processor and operating-system configuration rather than treating every model as interchangeable.

Which handheld should you buy?

  • Choose Steam Deck OLED if you want an OLED panel and Valve’s SteamOS experience, and are happy with a 7.4-inch, 1280×800 screen.
  • Consider Legion Go S if you prefer an 8-inch, 1920×1200 IPS display with a 48–120Hz variable refresh rate, or need a specific Windows or SteamOS model.
  • Do not choose based on battery claims alone. The manufacturers report different kinds of battery figures, not a matched gaming comparison.

These are fit recommendations from published manufacturer specifications, not a verdict from controlled head-to-head testing. Lenovo’s PSREF for the Legion Go S 8ARP1, dated May 15, 2026, documents Z1 Extreme and Z2 Go families, with Windows and SteamOS options. Check the regional model number and operating system on the unit you plan to buy.

How do the screens compare?

Specification Legion Go S Steam Deck OLED
Display 8-inch IPS, 1920×1200; 48–120Hz VRR (Lenovo PSREF, Legion Go S 8ARP1, May 15, 2026) 7.4-inch HDR OLED, 1280×800; up to 90Hz (Valve technical specifications, accessed October 7, 2026)

On paper, the Legion Go S gives you more screen area, more pixels and a higher refresh-rate ceiling. The Deck’s distinguishing display specifications are OLED and HDR. Those numbers do not establish which screen looks better to you, nor do they show how a particular game will perform at each device’s resolution.

Which Legion Go S configuration are you comparing?

Legion Go S is not a single fixed configuration. Lenovo lists both Z1 Extreme and Z2 Go processor families, plus Windows and SteamOS options; memory and storage also vary. Check the full model number, processor, operating system, RAM and SSD capacity for the regional SKU before comparing listings. A conclusion about one version should not be generalized to every Legion Go S.

What do the battery figures actually tell you?

Device Manufacturer battery information What the figure represents
Legion Go S, cited PSREF configuration 55.5Wh; up to 15.4 hours Lenovo’s maximum is for local 1080p video playback at 150 nits, not gaming (PSREF, May 15, 2026).
Steam Deck OLED 50Wh; 3–12 hours Valve describes gameplay time as dependent on content (technical specifications, accessed October 7, 2026).

These are manufacturer specifications with different measurement bases. Lenovo’s video-playback maximum cannot be compared directly with Valve’s content-dependent gameplay range, and neither figure is a matched game test. If battery life is your deciding factor, look for a credible test of the exact SKUs playing the same game at comparable settings and brightness.

Can you use either handheld with a dock or microSD card?

Both support microSD storage expansion and USB-C video output for an external display. Lenovo specifies USB4 ports with DisplayPort 1.4 and says USB-C docking solutions are supported; Valve lists USB-C DisplayPort output. A compatible dock can make sense if you plan to play on an external screen, while a microSD card is an optional way to add storage. Confirm accessory compatibility for your specific model before buying.
